The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

5ms is the grey-to-grey pixel response time. It has more to do with ghosting than input lag. Input lag has to be measured differently, and is virtually never advertised by the manufacturer. I’m not sure what the input lag is on the VH242H, though.

So hopefully between 2ms and 5ms it /should/ be unfeelable? I don’t use visual cues when playing, I feel it all out, muscle memory and all.
I haven’t played on one of these yet, but a friend of mine who plays on lagless all the time and has one recommended it to me. So I should be good.

The 2-5 milliseconds is only for pixel response. With slow pixel response, moving objects can have faint afterimages.

Input lag is totally different. Lag happens during input processing, before the LCD panel is refreshed, which is where pixel response comes in. It is different for each model of monitor, depending on how it processes the image. I’m not sure if lag tests have been done on the VH242H, but I didn’t see any on a quick search. Asuses have tended to be pretty decent lately, but again it is different for each model.

For the “Rock Band 2” test, do you need an instrument for it to work? I’m thinking about picking up a copy just to test my TV.

Yeah, input lag is NEVER advertised in the specifications, don’t worry about what your friends tell you.

Anyone know about 19 inch 4:3 lcds with low latency? Trying to get a replacement for an arcade monitor and I’m not having luck finding a 21 inch crt.

thanks azproc. One more Q, would you say that connecting the system via hdmi to dvi will have less lag than having it connected with just hdmi?

God, I’ve had the ASUSVH236H since forever, but I just recently got an Xbox360. INB4 poorfag ( f***you ) Okay so anyways I’ve messed with the monitor settings for my PS3 and I’ve put it on GameMode but tweaked the brightness and contrast tremendously. The contrast ratio is pretty bad and blacks aren’t as black as I’d like them to be.

I do understand that the VH236H is a 1080p monitor, but for best results - considering that most of the fighting games we play are scaled as 720p by default should I have my Xbox HDMI setting to 720p?

For people with the VH236H monitor; what are your settings for both console (PS3 & XBOX), as well as your monitor’s?

The reason why I ask this is because I’m curious to see what else may contribute to input lag with monitors, and being that a good number of us may have this monitor it’d help get quicker results. I’ve messed with every setting possible (without doing any formal input lag tests) with no effect on what I may consider “too laggy” for me to play with.

Anyone?

360 scales laglessly to the resolution you have it set to in the dashboard.

Thanks for that EMX. ill leave it on 1080

So, I’m going to go ahead and grab the Asus EVO monitor. I notice however that it only has HDMI, DVI, and VGA inputs. If I got in the mood to retro-game and hook up an older console with component inputs (or even composite/s-video for the really old stuff), what kind of converters would you recommend (if there’s a difference between brands or anything)? And does the monitor handle sub-HD resolutions adequately?

If you want to use older consoles on this monitor, you are going to need an upscaler of some sort. XRGB, DVDO edge, etc.

Wow, I’ve been reading about the Panasonic Viera TL-32C3 for about 10 pages now and no one lag tested it yet? Pretty disappointing. Where is Kineda when you need him?

Does anyone know anything about the Samsung PX2370 monitor? I believe it is marketed towards gamers, but that means nothing to me. It could still be junk.

Does the HDMI cable cause any lag? and what kind of frame rates do we get from PS3/XBOX?

I’m still waiting for information on the 32C3 or the 32X30 myself. Someone bought a C3 earlier I thought, about June or so.

If you want to do the automated test you’ll need the official rockband 2 guitar. You can do the manual test with the drums and guitar. I don’t think you can do it with a regular controller but im not 100% sure.

Cable do not cause lag, it’s the monitor/tv you’re using that’s processing the image digitally.

I own the panny TC L32C3.

My opinion on it is that while input lag is not even remotely noticeable, ghosting can be extremely bothersome to my eyes. The viewing angles are amazing being an Alpha IPS panel.

However I think I may switch it for the LG 32LK450 if i can find one with the S-IPS panels inside. In my area however there is none with the CUS***Y*** model number, which have that particular panel. The models labeled with CUS***D ***use the VA panels that have terrible viewing angles and worse input lag.
