The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

I would have recommended the asus vh236h if you did. Try looking for the vk246h or vw246h both those monitors or great for gaming.

it has been a long time that i’m looking for one of them but i could not find. I’m living in Turkey

I did testing for the ve228h earlier in the thread. I have yet to get any evidence that the vh236h laggs less.

Hahah same i dont think the vh236h is lagless it would be nice to see some lag test with it.

Does anyone know the exact setup for the alienware optx monitor in terms of connections? In other words, is the system connected via straight up hdmi or hdmi to DVI to be considered “lagless”? Sorry for the noob Q

Is it generally safe to say that any comercial display monitor I purchase will be good to go for console gaming (like the one in the below link)? Or, will I have to test it before purchasing?

I wouldn’t buy that if i were you unless you’ve seen lag test or other test conforming that it is good for gaming. Just buy the asus vh236h monitor unless that’s to small for you.

I conducted a calibration test using Guitar Hero 2 (xbox 360). The test result indicated successful but it did not show the amount of input lag. What does this mean?

Input lag is defined as the delay between when a user presses a button on a input device and when that action is reflected on the monitor.

Here is a example of input lag every gamer’s worst nightmare

So based on the test I conducted is it safe to say that my tv doesn’t lag that much?

I’m not to sure how accurate the calibration test using Guitar Hero 2 is. But to test u need a crt or a lagless monitor to test input lag which will affect your game play if it is very high. If you think the monitor is good get it if not then look for another monitor. For that amount of money why not get a plasma tv.

From this thread a while back I learned (I have a Samsung LN40A450C1D) that by plugging in my HDMI cable into HDMI 2 and labeling it PC it would reduce lag. Everything was going fine for a while but recently I’ve been having a problem. If I go to HDMI 2 without my PS3 turned on, picture and sound are in entertainment mode. When I turn on my PS3 my TV automatically takes it off entertainment mode and when I go to highlight entertainment its greyed out and not even an option. If I edit the name of HDMI 2 (from PC to anything via camcorder, tv, game, etc…) it’ll automatically go back to entertainment mode. From what I understand thou that would defeat the purpose of helping with HD lag because it needs to be labeled PC. I’ve recently hooked up my laptop via VGA to TV to watch a movie on my TV but I don’t see how that would effect anything. If anybody could help out and let me know whats going on I’d appreciate it.

EDIT: When I put it in Entertainment mode I put it on the game setting to further reduce lag. It used to work fine before but now its not even an option while under HDMI 2 PC

Alright I messed around with my ps3’s display settings. My PS3 was on a display setting of 1080p. I turned it to 720p and entertainment mode came back. Is this because my Tv is 720p native and needs to be on 720p for entertainment mode (game) to go into effect?

Sorry to ressurect a thread but I’m in a pickle as far as which monitor that I should be buying.
I’ve been recommended two. On someone’s advice, which would be the more beneficial or are they pretty much the same?

And I don’t know if I’m understanding right, but would I still be able to play in HDMI and have it lagless or would it cause the lag to happen again and hence would need VGA?

I have that same monitor myself, I use it on hdmi only and it feels pretty similar to my SDTV. However, I too would like an answer to this question, that doesn’t involve “the feel” of the monitor when playing.

I’d definitely go with the ASUS if these are your choices because the other monitor you linked is from a ???manufacturer.

And HDMI is fine for monitors, as very few have post-processing (to keep costs low) through that, unlike TVs (which compete on best picture, not cost). A crude way to generalise, but anyhow.

Definitely HDMI, which is how EVO is set up. Again, not the answer you wanted, but I have a gut feeling EVO doesn’t spend money on DVI adapters for each station.

Well, at the very least that answer has a healthy dose of logic to it. Thanks for the input.

don’t know how common it is with monitors nowadays but the VE228H (and i assume most ASUS monitors as well) support sync on green, so older consoles can be hooked straight up with one of these http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10235&cs_id=1023503&p_id=6025&seq=1&format=2

So I went with the Asus in the end and have friends telling me “5ms is still laggy.” I can never tell if I’m being trolled or not with this so what’s your take? What’s the MS of the Evo monitors? 2ms or 5ms?
