The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Can somebody post input lag results of
Alienware OptX AW2210
Asus VH236H
A standard CRT monitor?

I tried searching but I cannot find anything conclusive.

Curious to know if this was ever tested. I currently own one, but I’m still capable of returning it if there is anything better in the same price range and 32" size.

Comparatively to these if anyone has info on these tvs as well.

-Samsung LN32d403

Here’s a thread I remember reading about way back when on the Canadian consumer deals website redflagdeals
There is a complaint from an office user about ghosting there; I do apologize as it’s bad evidence or lack thereof of any.
So in other words, there is no harm in trying the monitor at this point but there are no concrete tests that have been done. /sigh
Sorry dude.

I have a 40" Samsung LCD HDTV with a native resolution of 720p. By setting my 360 to output 720p and using a VGA cable, I never had any lag (confirmed with Rock Band 2 calibration test). Long story short, the LCD display is cracked so I need a new TV.

The problem is that it seems nearly impossible to find a comparable Samsung set with a native resolution of 720p, as it seems most sets these days have a native resolution of 1080p. If I were to buy a native 1080p model and set the output of my 360 to 1080p while connected with a VGA cable, would it cause lag? Or should I really try to find a native 720p set, as that’s what I hear most games output at?

Cicada1337, who used to host SF4 streams at his house, used to have a YouTube channel where he compared the OptX AW2210, VH236H and a CRT side-by-side-by-side, and I was about to link you to the video but it looks like YouTube owned him for copyright violation.

The final results are that the Alienware and the Asus are about equal, with like 6 or 7 ms of lag equaling really less than one third of a frame. They are about as close to lagless as you can get as far as HD is concerned.

i don’t think this is correct. i am sensitive to input lag and i can feel the lag if i am not playing in game mode. i’m sure the results from the lag tests were performed when the monitor was in game mode as well.

if the modes only changed presets you should be able to replicate scenery mode or theater mode picture through game mode, but you can’t. the reason being is because game mode has the least amount of post processing than the other modes. you won’t be able to achieve the deep black levels or vivid color in game mode.

with the 360 doing the scaling itself, you shouldn’t have any lag problems. usually there isn’t any of the extra processing done via VGA

I hear that the viewsonic don’t lag righty? If so this is a good deal yes?!

No monitor brand is immune to lag. Make sure your source on that info did a good test on that specific model monitor.

What do you guys think about the Alienware OPTX AW2310 monitor? I know that the EVO Ready monitors were the AW2210, but the AW2310 are the only Alienware model I can find here.

Also, from where I can buy it, it’s almost the same price as the Samsung 2233RZ, wich one should I opt for?

The comments section for this review says 0-8ms. Not sure why they didn’t put the numbers in the review itself.

Im looking for any lcd tv, 26" or 32" size range, that can do low input lag and has low pixel response time. Ghosting bothers my eyes too much for the response time to be over 4ms.

yeah, there is ghosting on that monitor, i think im going to pick up the asus vw246h from what i had read it had no ghosting and no lag input and just as good as the asus vh236h, i could be wrong though any input on the asus vw246h that you might know of?

Do you guys know what monitor they’re using at EVO this year?

Curious about this as well.

Thanks for the info. I really wish that video was available somewhere. I’m having a hard time choosing between the the 2 monitors. I like the rotate feature of the alienware. From the research I’ve done, people say the image quality is better on the alienware as well. These are nice perks overall, but my priority is input lag. CRT is out of the question (unfortunately). My main use will be offline 3s OE.

Are you talking about these pics btw?

My friend got a big 42" Sanyo tv the other day, don’t know the exact model name or anything. I know it has that wonky 120hz thing going on though, not for me. Anyway, he says when he plays his xbox using the HDMI he has input lag. I don’t understand how that is possible really and I think its in his head. Is there some kind of magic option or setting that will fix this? He says it has no game mode option unfortunately.

Wiz said the Asus monitors. Assuming the VH236H since they already have a bunch.

Thanks for the test results!

How do you like the E3 overall as a gaming monitor? Do the colors and blacks look good? Would you recommend it?

This guy tested the U3 and it averages 10 - 20 with a range of 0 - 30, but doesn’t recommend it and returned it because it didn’t produce an accurate image and washed out colors.

Sucks because I was really thinking about getting that one.

Great thread tons of good info guys!

Are there any good RCA to HDMI converters so that I can connect the PS2/Wii to my Asus VW246H?
