The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

I haven’t had much time to actually play games on my new TC-L32C3 so I’ll probably extensively test it out this weekend.

Is it better to use an hdmi cable with the xbox or composite cables? I’ve heard arguments from both sides.

We should actually have a compiled list of tested screens and results.

Someone can volunteer to do this, but honestly I won’t say I’m reliable enough to trust for continuous updates.
It’s also why this thread has not had a new one since… ever. Even though some of the info in OP is not entirely correct.

What’s inacurrate?

From my understanding HDMI always (all the locals around here plus most of the streamers us HDMI I believe). If you test your TC-L32C3 out and post some feedback, I’ll have your babies.

Well not entirely inaccurate. But saying digital signage does not lag is a misnomer - they certainly have low lag, but this can mean even 2 frames. You can’t simply buy digital signage and expect it not to lag.

The HDFury being a suitable alternative has been discussed as good, which it is, but it does not stress the fact that panels can be inherently laggy and hence does not entirely eliminate the lag if you have a slow panel. It can very well get rid of extreme post-processing times which occur in many TVs via HDMI, for example.

It’s still a very good introduction, but does not tell you how to test or what models have been tested.

vh236h on sale for $149 after $20 MIR.

buy.com has it for $139 but they also charge sales tax, recycle fee

on the mlg forums ive read them using the hdmi and vga input on the monitor for different games.
anyone know if evo used it via hdmi/vga.

I think the VK246H 24" Asus is “lagless” from what PRAD has to say about it:

Anyone have an opinion on the Samsung PX2370? Apparently less than 1/2 a frame of input lag and PQ is supposed to be very good for a TN panel.

I still haven’t decided on a monitor, not until I’ve explored all options.

I just purchased a Panasonic TC-L32U3, and I just wanted to warn potential customers that it doesn’t support 1080P through the VGA or component connections. I’ve email Panasonic tech support, and it appears their TV’s (or at least this line) doesn’t support it.
Although 1080P on HDMI works perfect.
Component was tested on the Xbox 360, and VGA was tested on the PC and 360

I like that more sites are posting input lag test results in monitor reviews. I do wish they’d post results at some common non-native resolutions though. Lagless at 1920x1080@60Hz is good, but for e.g. PS3 users (720p games displayed at 720p) it is not enough info to make a confident purchase.

for the 360 /w vh236h is better to run it at 1080 with hardware scaling or 720 with monitor scaling

Is vga cable better?

I could also test my other asus monitor.

do you have an asus evo monitor/ I suggest getting an hdmi splitter like I did and posting results for the good of the community.

PS I don’t know much about lag tests but judging from mine it’s a frame or 2 off.

Thanks for the heads up. Was inches away from taking the rish and trying HD Fury. I think I’m going to save my time :P.

I could care less about full 1080p tbh. I’m a PS3 user, so I’m fine with my 720p :P. How does the TV feel though (input-wise)?

Word.

If your just going for 720p, I’d look at the TC-L32X30 instead of the L32U3. Why look at a 1080p TV if your not going to utilize it.

As for lag, all I have to compare it to is a BenQ FP241W 24" monitor, and the TC-L32U3 is 30-50 ms faster. So take that for what it’s worth. It seems fast enough for myself, but I wish I could compare it to a CRT monitor.

Are there some results for this TV? If you are saying it’s 30-50ms faster, that’s a huge difference, since my set is at about 60ms (3.5+frames). What is the BenQ’s?

These cable tests sounds like a hassle, is there something wrong with using guitar hero/rock band? I’m done with wires… my power bar looks like a tentacle monster.

Sad part is, I don’t know the lag of the BenQ. I’ve looked online, but haven’t really found anything. I suppose I could try the rockband2 test with this monitor, and compare that will the U3, but I don’t know how accurate that will be.

That’s good enough for me! I feel it’s totally valid to just have a Guitar/DJ Hero/Rockband test and then the gamer’s personal experience/opinion on the tested display. I mean, I don’t think a person would be in this thread if they didn’t know about input delay/couldn’t feel input delay, ya know? So if you could post up some Rockband tests and your personal experience with your displays, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Just in case someone is going to hunt this thread/forum for HD input delay results for various displays, here’s my experience and test results for a couple displays (I would totally do it, but work has given me zero free time as of late): Philips 32" 32PFL5332D=DJ Hero tested to have an average of 59ms (3.5+frames). The 32" Vizios (the one I tested is VO320E)=DJ Hero tested, had an average of 35ms (2+frames).

Yeah I agree with you on the VK246H… just someone has posted he thought otherwise and promised to post further results (which he hasn’t).
So I was hesitant to make the firm recommendation.
Personally I’ve played on the VK and it’s absolutely fine. Cheers for posting the link… I’m still considering it lagless unless otherwise proven wrong.

A cable test is really simple. Rockband/guitar hero tests have are accurate but not precise… results don’t correlate well to ‘x frames of lag’.
It is also variable, which you really can’t test without the cable method. I mean if it’s fine for you then by all means. But it won’t be a monitor/tv to recommend until we have solid figures via a cable test.

Majin, any heads up on the timer test?
