The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

for anyone looking for a large lagless monitor you can still purchase the lg w2753vc pf which were the same ones used in the first gods garden sf4 tournament. i bought one a week ago at http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/LG_Electronics_LG_W2753VC_PF/W2753VCPF/11146255/ . they ship really fast and the monitor came in perfect shape. the monitor is 27" if you dont know. if they dont have anymore in stock this place http://www.provantage.com/lg-electronics-w2753vc-pf~7LGEL05W.htm also has them

So I did some testing with Rockband 2, which suggests the opposite of the cable test. Here is what I came up with:
Rockband 2 test on the Panasonic TC-L32U3 over HDMI @ 1080p = 47 ms of lag (test was taken 3 times, all 47 ms)
Rockband 2 test on BenQ FP241W over Component cable @ 1080p = 25-30 ms of lag (test was taken 3 times, range of 25-30)
Note: I can’t run the test on HDMI on the BenQ because I can’t get passed the sound portion of the test.

So I did the cable test again with my PC. BenQ FP241W over DVI @ 1080p and Panasonic TC-L32U3 over DVI to HDMI adapter, and I still get 50 ms difference, with the TC-L32U3 with the lower time.

Am I doing something wrong?

I’m assume you enabled game mode?

your the best zektor!

Grrrr… I was really curious about the TC-L32U3, but I’d prefer the lag to be no higher than 20ms on average :(. sigh
I doubt you are doing anything wrong. I’m guessing that using an adapter for DVI to HDMI causes excess delay on the monitor (could be wrong).
THANK YOU btw! I really appreciate the test results and the info :).

Yes, game mode was enabled.

But the TC-L32U3 was the one that had the DVI to HDMI adapter, and that was the one with the better time. So I don’t think that had an impact on it.

I know I’m being picky… so please forgive if I’m asking things again.

  1. Make sure both screens are running off ONE DVI out with a splitter.
  2. Possible to take a 60fps video of it and post to Youtube?
  3. It would be very awesome if you could find a CRT and find out the lag of the BenQ.
  4. You are awesome. Cheers for doing the tests.
  5. I’d trust the cable technique over the Rock band one.

I’ll need to get a splitter. I was using both dvi outputs on my GTX285 to get the posted results. I did switch the outputs and that also showed the same results. But once I get a splitter I post my findings. I’ll also try and shoot some video and post it.
If I can get a hold of a CRT I’ll run some more test, but I don’t know how likely that’ll be.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Someone over on AVForums tested the TC-L32U3 against a CRT monitor. His CRT was unable to display 1080p, so the tests were done in 720p instead.

Cool thanks for that. Sometimes graphics drivers/graphics cards display things that mess up the input delay between two outputs; which is why we need a splitter.
Simply cloning through two outputs can’t give an accurate comparison, as Majin has shown with his tests.

Otherwise testing against an EVO monitor (VH236H) if you can’t get a CRT should be fine as well.

Question, I can get a hold of a CRT monitor, but it doesn’t support 1080p. (max res is 1280x1024) Will this work for the test? Or do I need to find a monitor that supports 1080p?

Note: I’m still in the process of getting a splitter.

I’m not 100%, but I do think that unless both displays are out-putting at the same resolution (as in they are both displaying 1080p, 720p, etc.) the test would be inaccurate. If the signal is being sent as 1080p and then run through a splitter, it will still have to be processed down to the CRT’s lower resolution… (I could be totally off, but that is my understanding any way, so please someone correct me if I’m wrong).

you would have to set both at a res both monitors would support, and make sure they are at the exact same refresh rate (60hz) as well. You would also have to turn scaling on the LCD off (which is a setting in your display driver control panel)

I am looking into getting a new hdtv for games (XBOX 360) and looking at getting a Sony BRAVIA EX523 does anyone have any info on this?
i am usen a BenQ G2400W pc monitor witch is ok, about to pick up a Alienware OptX AW2210.

The other thread of this seems to be outdated so i wanted to ask, what tv’s have low lag… I’m asking this because i’m quite tired of playing streetfighter on my projector and dealing with lag and yes i’m very new. I’m making this thread because navigating the otherone one witht he outdated homepage is quite difficult

its not outdated you are just lazy.

get the evo ones. theyre really ncie for the price. i think its the ASUS VH26H. i think alot of gamers would recommend it as well.

Merging with this.

Think we could list off a few “approved” monitors in the OP so people don’t have to recommend the usual Asus/Alienware TN panels every page? I follow this thread for the TV lag test results not to read the same question asked 30x per page.
