The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

ASUS VH222H (21.5’), VK246H (24’), VW246H (24’ with webcam), Alienware OptX AW2210 (21.5’ EVO '10 monitor); to name a few.

They’re all on the same level? Only the vh236h is better? Damn, can’t get it ib Europe…anyway thanks!

The VH236H is the most used. The other ones I mentioned will also be fine. There is some discrepency on the 24’ ASUS models, but I can assure you that the VH222H and the Alienware are as lagless as the VH236H if not better.

^I’ll do a better test tomorrow.

Cheers for doing this. Could you edit the youtube video description of the model?
And for those unaware, I believe Majin was testing the ASUS VE278Q LED 27’. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Again, props to you taking the time to do this. It’s a shame that it does lag, but now you’re an expert at doing any tests in the future. Any way you can do a stopwatch test?

I can pick up a dvi splitter.

MajinHurricane: Was that HDMI input? Would you be able to test it using the VGA cable if you have that?

Not everyone can? lol. I don’t think it’s even mentioned in this thread other than when I posted it a few pages back.

It was [S]DVI[/S] HDMI.

so, from what I can tell, the biggest TV available with least amount of lag is that 27’ viewsonic?

Well you can look at the model rootnode has posted below has 9.4ms-20ms; from about half a frame to slightly over 1 frame.
If Majin can get some numbers going, we can compare them. All we know is that there is some lag on the ASUS.

And they’re monitors, not TVs.

i see thanks. though reading through that more it looks like the tv actually has 2ms-3ms.

Also, since it’s just a monitor…is it missing anything compared to a TV?

Actually it was HDMI!

I purchased this http://www.startech.com/product/HDMISPL1HH-1-ft-HDMI-to-2x-HDMI-Splitter-Cable-for-Digital-Video-Male-to-Female

Response time =/= lag.
Monitor just means it does not have a TV tuner. And potentially non stellar speakers.

Majin - corrected post to HDMI.

ah i mixed the sections up. ok, got it. hmmm, not sure about it yet. really wanna get a nice sized tv (or monitor) in place of my CRTV. trying to read anything on my PS3>CRTV is impossible. also wanna watch my blurays in better quality again. but wanna avoid lag as much as possible as this would be my main gaming hardware too (worrying about some maneuvers which require 1 frame precision).

Not really sure how that ‘just over a frame’ would feel.

I’ll have to think it through or maybe see if it’s possible to return if I don’t like.

from what I gather, even the smaller monitors have at least about half a frame of lag?

Half a frame (8ms) is fine. It’s pretty much not noticeable (1 frame = 16ms). Anything with a lower average lag than that should be fine for most people.
Obviously the lower the better. EVO monitor is effectively lagless as a CRT, but random lag spikes can occur infrequently. It’s not noticeable enough to affect play.

yeah this is my first time hearing that the lag may be variable. that sounds like worse of a problem then the lag itself if the timing can change. but i guess it changes only by about half a frame.

oh, so the EVO monitor is 0ms? I may look into that…

For the most part. It can get random spikes to 8ms~12ms if I recall correctly. But if you ran a stopwatch test, it’d be rare to spot such an occurrence. Again, it isn’t significant enough to mess up your play, and you’ll still hit the same things you would on a CRT, 99.9% of the time.

Getting ‘lagless’ HD displays is still good because it looks nicer and is consistently below a level where it would affect your timing. I can ‘feel’ 1-2 frames of lag, but it’s hard for me to distinguish anything that’s in the range of 0-1 frames.

I’m assuming I’m posting “tl;dr” things, so here…

The TC-L32X30 Viera or the TC-L37E3 Viera by Panasonic. Thoughts? ANY feedback? Laggy as hell, Guitar Hero/Rockband tests?

reposting if anyone has any idea…
