The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

having a 730p native screen isn’t bad for 360/ps3 as your fighting games are being rendered at 720p. None of them are 1080p.

does really no one know whether CRT tvs connected via HDMI gain input lag?

There is no straight yes or no answer. While HDMI does not inherently lag*, it is a digital format, and this gives manufacturers the perfect opportunity (as the TV will require a processor) to insert arguably needless image “enhancement” algorithms. These algorithms are one of the main causes, but not the only cause, of lag.

I’m really not sure whether today’s HD CRTs have the above-mentioned lag-inducing algorithms that are so prevalent in LCDs and plasmas, but I suspect they do.

So, to answer your question: it depends on the TV. Generally, however, HDMI will not lag more on a specific TV than component or DVI. The exception being VGA. Most TVs turn off image enhancements and overscan when dealing with VGA.

*You could argue that because it’s a digital signal, it will HAVE to be processed before an image can be displayed, but this processing time could easily be made negligible if no image enhancements were included.

This is a misleading statement with respect to the 360.

You can configure it to output (thus internally upscale) to 1080p (or 720 for that matter) allowing it to match the native resolution of many LCD panels which cuts back a significant amount of input lag - particularly for screens that exhibit a poor ability to rescale images.

The PS3 cannot do this sans for perhaps a dozen games. None of which include the SFIV series.

EDIT: Cheers RoboKrikit for the clarification below. Deleted original stuff to reduce confusion.

PS3 does not upscale 720p games. If you have your PS3 configured for 1080p, and play a 720p game, it will switch to 720p mode to display that game.

This is important to know, because if you buy a 1920x1080 monitor for PS3, and lag tests were only done on it at 1920x1080, you may get different (laggier) results because the monitor will have to upscale the 720p input to 1080p. When lag tests are done on a monitor, they should be tested at all of the resolutions you might use.

does 120hz model causes more input lag than 60hz model?

i’m planning to buy 32" LCD TV,

older model is that has 60hz, well known as 32ld350 which is good for gaming (has exactly 1F lag)

newest model is that has 120hz, 32lk450. other things are all same but “hz”.

janedoe: thx, that’s what i thought. my tv has certain image enhancers, but i can deactivate all of them (and surely do). i will someday test it in comparison to yprbr (that would take away the digital-to-analog signal change).

I just returned a 46" TV that had 120HZ, because the lag was fucking terrible. I couldnt pull any combos or time any of my shit right.

I suggest you look for LCDs or HDTVs that have a refresh rate of 200+ HZ

I highly recommend the Samsung 2233RZ for PC gaming. It’s AMAZING! I can’t wait to play AE on this baby! :lovin:

how exactly do I test?

Edit: I mean, I got a new monitor. an asus 27inch ve led one.

I want to test how laggy it is, I don’t just clone the screens do I?

does anyone know what acer monitor revelations is using for their tournament next month? on their website they said it’s confirmed lagless

Looking to buy a few more monitors for our community.

We already have some ASUS VW195N 19" displays that are working fine for us, but can’t find them for sale on any European sites anymore for a reasonable (approx €100) price.

Anyone know of any other good, cheap, relatively lag free 19" monitors?

Thanks in advance.

Is the ASUS VH236H COLOR=#141414 the only ASUS worth getting? do any of the slightly larger models have the same performance of the VH236H??

The bigger sizes than the VH236H are VK246H (24") and VK266H (25.5").

But are those confirmed lagless? A guy I know has a slightly bigger ASUS monitor that lags…

24’ is lagless. the 25.5’ has about one frame of lag.

I’m reading lots of high praises on Panasonic Viera L32C3 and I found them at Amazon and Best Buy for a good price. I might pick one up. Are there bigger models in that series with the same specs? 36"? 40"?

I did find 2 other models though and wanted to see if anyone had any experience with them.

Also the TV will be used for both gaming and leisure. I’m concerned for the gaming part and of course I want it to look good for the Blu-Rays since my girl watches a lot of movies. My question is which would be better a 720 or 1080 HD TV? I don’t have much experience with 720 vs 1080. Is there a very noticeable difference between the 2? Also if I was gonna go up to bigger screens would it be better to have 720 or 1080? :frowning:

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a question for you guys. I bought a 32 inch LCD tv from a friend but unfortunately he did not have the desktop stand for it. I tried to contact the company that made the tv but they keep giving me the run around. Wall mount isn’t an option right now. Any idea on where to get one?

Thanks
Kevin

someone answer this damn question.
