The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

Just a short question : as VGA box like the HD box pro adds lag (almost 2 frames) and that the most lagless HD TV has 1 frame lag (if we except asus that aren’t TV but screens), it’s definitly impossible to use a SD TV like the PS2 on an HDTV afterall.

I imagine it adds lag, but are HDTV that has scart or component connection have the same input lag than HDMI ? When i see tests about HDTV and input lag, the source is never given so I imagine it’s HDMI connection.

To resume : are scarts/component lagless ?

any body game on panasonic plasmas? i heard there good vs lag. im thinking abnout getting this one Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Panasonic VIERA TC-P50GT25 50-inch 1080p 3D Plasma HDTV, Black

I’m in a market for a 27-32" tv, too. 1080p preferred. I’ve been researching for the past couple of days and I’m down to:

Panasonic Viera L32S1(discontinued)
LG 32LD450
Toshiba 32E200U

But of course, I won’t be able to tell if these are good gaming wise without testing them first. Any advices/inputs?

Okay. Really? Literally four posts above:

I’m getting a new tv either tomorrow or Saturday! Finally after using the same horrid 19" for 6 years!
I was looking at Bestbuy yesterday and I most likely am going to get the Sharp Aquos lc-40d68ut
I’ll tell you guys how it is soon.

This looks good. Does anyone else have any recommendations for 40" sets with little to no lag? I’m looking to buy one within the next 2 weeks or so.

See I use a pos Emerson HD tv and I cant really see a difference between that and one of the higher end gaming moniters

I see alot of posts that are “subjective” evaluations of sets.

We really need objective tests here guys, seriously.

Does Guitar Hero count? I just got my Sharp Aquos lc-40d68ut today and I played on expert like usual. I played in game mode and it felt the same as always but it looked a lot prettier. It does have the legendary Sharp Vyper drive so I guess you can just check info on that to get the exact numbers but I don’t feel anything and absolutely love it.

It’s been mentioned that GH tests are terribly inaccurate, even the automatic one.

But I think that even though they will not give you absolute values, they can be used to get a relative sense of lag versus a known lagless set like a crt.

But at that point, if you already have a crt, you have half what you need to do a proper test anyway.

The problem with “i don’t feel anything” is not everyone has the same lag sensitivity.

My 2 pence.

If you want to test, a CRT is pretty much required. Or at least a set where you KNOW the average lag so you can just add or subtract to find an average.

I noticed the game does tend to give a lot of slack on when the notes are hit even when I played on my crt. I’ll try with precision mode and look up more info on the tv.

If anyone wants to know, this is the display used at the recent God’s Garden 3 tournament.

Kudos to Eizo for being one of the few companies that acknowledge the existence of input lag.

Wait are you talking about the games calibration test? Because I didn’t do that, so I was playing just fine with the tv in game mode and do manual calibration.

Newegg.com - Acer AT3265 Black 32" 6.5ms HDMI LCD Monitor Built in TV Tuner 1920 x 1080 450 cd/m2 4000:1

Anybody happen to know anything about the Acer AT3265? A straight-forward Goolge search isn’t yielding anything.

What’s the story on that display? Tried doing a search for that model, but came up empty for anything in english.

EDIT: From what I can gather through Google translator, it has a “through mode”. Seems to have a minimum of half a frame of input lag.

It’s used by God’s Garden so I’m confident it’s good for gaming. Trouble is, it might be hard to find this display outside Japan. Still, for anyone who gets to travel there or stumbles upon this somehow.

I saw this on the Kao TV gods garden stream a couple weeks back. They stated that it has 0.5 frames of lag. And the instruction manual listed monitor settings specifically for different games. The price is a little high, from $800 and upwards to $1000+

To answer my own question for the benefit of anyone else who might be interested in 32" LCD TVs…

Decided to jump on the 32LD450 since it was only $370(free shipping) on Amazon and been playing around with it since Saturday. Though I haven’t done any serious objective tests with it, I’m pretty satisfied with the input lag; I’m usually very sensitive to input lags/delays, but out of all the IPS panels/LCD TVs I’ve played on, this is by far the best. For reference, I have a Dell U2410, which is supposed to be an acceptable IPS monitor for gaming due to it having a “gaming mode” which cuts down on the input lag considerably, but even so, fighting games were personally a no-go.

I’ve been playing a little bit of offline 3S since I got the monitor and it’s playable. Parry timing is on most of the time and I have little to no trouble hit confirming. Overall, I’m very satisfied. Not to mention it also does an admirable job being a monitor.

AVSforums has an excellent thread with lots of information for this model:

if i can get my hands on a asus VH236H monitor should i do it. This is the monitors that evo uses if my information is correct? right now im using a CRT and it just looks to ugly for my HD games. i have a 42" tv but it has about 2-3 frams of lag. so i was thinking of picking up this ASUS just to play fighters.
