The New Definitive HDTV Lag FAQ

For the Rock Band 2 testing, do I have to have the guitar and microphone?

I started a post that got to long so in short.

NO two Panels are built the same despite model number and batch or manufacturing plant. Video settings will differ as well as per input there will always be a difference in response time and video processing.

I deal with High-End Resi and Com jobs and come calibration time out of 32-100 of the identical set no 2 tvs will produce same results on same settings.

In the time of High Def there are too many variables from the output source to each individual cable. Panel with a Tuner or just a Display Panel every component and every piece connecting the component can change a setting a click or two. Even cable length going from a 3m to a 6m.

For now it’s there but just because person A got a 1ms delay with TV (A) person B can get a 5ms delay with same model TV (A)

But if you really want to power tweak find out how to get into your HDTV Sets Service Menu be careful though everything is abbreviated and you can potentially do more harm then good to your new set.

Is there a guide for tweaking HDTV sets by way of the service menu? I’ve never attempted to “hack” into a modern HDTV so I wonder what kind of options and tweaks, if any, there are that can be utilized to better input lag.

has anyone found any kind of consensus on what is the best consumer grade lcd in regards to lag? I have been trying to figure it out but it seems each source has varying opinions. If someone could direct me somewhere where some data is compiled i would be very grateful

There’s a lot of good info here, but unfortunately it’s not very helpful for people like me. I’m shopping for a new TV, and it’s damn near impossible to find any meaningful data on the lag of new TVs. I can’t just bust up in the store with a game and a CRT, and digital signage is just too expensive for my budget. How am I supposed to use this info to make a purchasing decision

I have a 27" HD tv (720p) I’m pretty sure there is a slight delay with my ps3 that is currently using HDMI. I read some post on here stating i should get a VGA cable, but i don’t have a VGA input on my HD TV. So what would my other options be?

what brand and model #?

looking through consumer reports march 2009 the samsung pn50a550 was rated the best plasma for price/performance

unfortunately no stores surrounding me have this particular model on display or in stock

i know i’m not supposed to ask if it lags, but does anyone have any experience with any of the 550 plasmas?

if i could go test it i would, but i can’t so i thought i would ask

I think people are pretty safe with Panny Plasmas. I just got a 46in PZ80u because of reports of minimal to no lag.

I can’t notice any lag in SF and when I tried it in RB I got 15ms and that was with a wireless guitar which is pretty much 10ms by itself.

My suggestion would be to go to a website like http://www.avsforum.com/ and either find a posting related to a TV you’re considering or creating a post about a particular TV and asking if anyone who has the model could perform an input lag test for you. It might sound like you’re asking a lot, but that’s what that forum is for. I’ve been looking for a TV as well and that site has proven to be both friendly and helpful.

What system and what kind of connection were you using?

Xbox360 with HDMI cables.

Hi everyone.

Firstly I apologise if this is incorrectly posted to this forum as a noob I am a bit out of depth, but I hope the info is useful.

Secondly: A most excellent thread which has given enlightenment on the issues of using a large flat panel tv as a monitor.

Although this forum/thread is primarily about games consoles and the various accoutrements that go with them, this post is about the experience of using an HDTV with a humble pc.

Having worked with computers since 1977 I have been asked by many people for advice on many things IT; recently I was asked on the possibility of connecting a friends pc to a Philips Ambilight Model 32PFL5403D/10.

As this model screen does not have a vga input, I got the necessary DVI to HDMI cable to do this.

The quality of the resulting picture is very good at native resolution.

However, as a player of Battlefield 2, I immediately noticed that there was a noticeable lag between moving the mouse and the pointer actually moving on the screen.
I experimented by moving the mouse from side to side whilst slowly increasing the speed of the movement, eventually I had the mouse moving left and the pointer moving right.
Whilst this is a subjective test, I decided to do a more objective test.
I reconnected the original pc screen to the second port of the graphics card and ran both screens side by side. The lag was then apparent to everyone.
Running Battlefield 2 was quite an eye opener. I could no longer hit anything unless it was a stationary target.

As you guys use consoles and play even more frenetic games I can see that any visual lag would be disastrous against an opponent using a system with virtually no lag.

I am waffling, the figures. I have a high speed 120 fps video camera. Filming both monitors side by side I found that the Philips HDTV lags behind the Samsung TFT PC monitor by 11 frames which works out at 91.6 ms at 120 fps.

Clearly this makes this combination of screen and computer unsuitable for fast action gaming.

Thanks everyone.

Phil

11 frames is huge, it’s not even FPS and fighting games that you can’t play with such lag … I guess that you can’t drive any car either …

By curiosity I went on hdtvtest.co.uk to check for other Philips and found this one which had a 140ms lag … (they compare it to something that already lag):
http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/Philips-37PFL9632D/Calibration/

Philips was all about enhancing the video quality with their ambilight stuff so it makes sense in a way.

Still someone reported a better lag with 7403 or something like this earlier.

Thanks for the feedback !

So would this work then to reduce lag on an HDTV using my 360 for SFIV?

Thankyou for clarifying. I also forgot to mention that you are my mortal rival for og hardcore supremacy

are there any other 1080p digital signage options besides the one in the OP. One that is 40" or bigger would be nice but i feel like its quite a specialty item

Microsoft sells and official one for $40.00. You can also find one on monprice for $8.00. As to if it will reduce lag or no depends on your tv. If you tv does no processing on the vga port, then yes it will reduce lag compared to the HDMI port. However if it processes the vga port as well, you wont see a reduction in lag.

Honestly i have a Samsung 1080p 1920x1080 40" HDTV. (LNT4065F)and i have absolutely no lag whatsoever, i don’t play in game mode, i even play in default settings.
