Per Pherai’s request from the Scumbag 101 podcast…
When did you start playing?
I remember playing the game twice at a friends house on PS2, many years ago. The first character I played was a red Makoto, I didn’t choose her, I was just handed the controller. If you mean “seriously”? That would be the launch of OE. I played on a friends PS3 one day before it launched on 360.
Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
Tons, mostly shooters, hack-and-slash or puzzle games.
Why did you pick up this game?
I watched a lot of videos back in like '05/06 quite a while after playing it for the first time. I wanted to play it then, but didn’t have the means…
Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
Kuroda? A few dvds? Maybe…
Double Fukiage “myths”. I shit you not, when I read that it was impossible on her, Oro and Ibuki, I so badly wanted to take a crack at them. At the time I didn’t fully grasp the mechanics behind doing such a thing (didn’t understand what a kara was at the time), but I was sure I could do it (over confidence). Not that long after though, Ibuki’s and Oro’s were figured out, Ibuki’s for the most part anyway…(I’m slowly working on a video detailing wtf to do for hers… fyi, it’s possible from every conceivable point, just like Chuns is, but it’s much harder) When I first loaded up OE, one of the first things I did was attempt a WFuki, of course it was my first time playing in years and I was on pad, but I did it eventually, next was Chun… But that took almost a year of tries >_>
Also, red parries!! Oh man how I love red parries… That’s because of Kuroda though…
Who is your rival?
Myself, that or the CPU honestly… I need to work on every facet of 3S, but the one thing I need to rectify within myself is to stop second guessing shit, I’m too hesitant, which frustrates me as I’m not like that in just about every other game I play. I haven’t played enough people to have a “rival”.
Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
Mediocre at best. I play the CPU on max stars in training mode a lot as I can’t stand ranked in the “state” it’s in. I can pull off some decent looking stuff, but core fundamentals are lost on the CPU as it reads inputs, you can’t even dash at some of them etc. Honestly, I don’t flat out “train” against a dummy much, I do some execution warm-ups, then check Player Matches, once I see that there’s zero playable ones, it’s time to beat up on the CPU. /tangent
Who is your favorite character?
… That’s really hard to answer… I like to play just about every character the same sans 12 and Chun. I wouldn’t want to remove them from the game or anything though, 3S is 3S, leave it be damn it.
What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
N/A unless you count OE’s “Tournament mode”, in which I won the only one I entered only a couple days after launch, you know, back when there were people playing that terrible mode…
Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)
If I were to compare it to other video games, that aren’t board games or a fighting game, I’d have to say Quake and Guitar Hero. You have to strategize (mind games and what have you) and react like in a Quake duel, but you also “have” to have the coordination and rhythm needed for GH (at least this is what I attribute my execution to).
Any rituals you have for before a match?
I used to move around on the character select screen in rhythm to the music, but I’ve been told it’s a bit annoying, so now I select my character&super, then move the stick to the rhythm.
Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
N/A
How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
Depends on how serious the tournament is IMO, friendly banter would be acceptable in most cases.
How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
Can be annoying, but headphones definitely help. This isn’t a good answer from an arcade perspective, that’s when the ability to zone out things of that nature come in handy.
What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
Obstacle, you work with what you’re given and try to make the best of it. I don’t touch ranked because I don’t like playing people that solely abuse lag tactics, but I have no issue when people attempt to play as though they’d be punished like they would offline, or at least keep lag stuff to a minimum…
Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
No, I don’t really plan on playing 12 or Chun, but I have tried messing with Chun a few times only to find some ridiculous gimmicks I’ve never seen before…
Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
Gimmicks mostly, stupid ones usually revolving around kara’ing things most wouldn’t… Maybe doing max damage (afaik) combos after Mak’s SA2 stuns them. Also, UF->F dashes to make things “easier” to combo…
What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
I Fukiage my ceiling fan to “clean it”, then I promptly replace the broken blades. Also how to play on an arcade stick, don’t crucify me… I have played games at arcades in malls and such before, but only to pass the time, so 3S essentially taught me to not suck so bad on a stick.
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
I do I do I do-oooh Seriously though, yes, I really enjoy the game, it also has a certain feeling to it that is hard to quantify (both playing and watching). I’m definitely looking forward to understanding the game more in the future.
If you can’t tell by some of my answers, I was lurking around for quite some time…
When did you start playing?
pretty much after the daigo vid came out is when i really started playing, but my first encounter with it was freshman year of college, 1999. there was a 2i machine in the commuter lounge. i didn’t know it was 2i, i just thought it was sf3. at some point, i found 3s at the school’s gameroom. i played it and got confused cuz i didn’t know there were different versions of sf3. i remember looking up moves for makoto (i think her hayate looked cool and made a cool sound) and then trying them out. ed ma, who i didn’t know was ed ma at the time, saw me playing her one day and remarked, “makoto?”, which isn’t significant, it’s just a random thing i remember. incidentally, i saw him play that game a lot, usually while wearing a huge backpack.
Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
lots of mvc1… that was actually the main reason i went to the gameroom. i played other vs games in high school… sf2 turbo in middle school… then in the years immediately leading up to the daigo vid, i was completely hooked on the tony hawk’s pro skater series (2-4). besides mvc1 in college, i played quake team arena and unreal tournament.
Why did you pick up this game?
daigo parry, coolest thing i had ever seen done in a fighting game. i immediately downloaded the sf3 dreamcast rom and played it on chankast in earnest. the parrying was super addictive, and something i had completely bypassed the first times i played it in college. just the feeling of taking a guess and being rewarded for it was awesome. that really helped me to overcome other aspects of the game that i at first felt were awkward… like, why is the shotos’ low rh so damn slow? but it slowly dawned on me that the game made sense… weaker moves come out faster, stronger moves come out slower… “using” the game was straightforward, like there aren’t weird button combinations that make the game complex… everything seemed apparently deterministic… and there didn’t seem to be a ton stuff that’s hidden from u where u need a lot of “insider” knowledge in order to have fun right away…
Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
see above.
Who is your rival?
no one. i think a few choice individuals on ggpo would say that my rival is metric, though. he is, but only in the sense that everyone good i’ve played against is my rival, i guess.
Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
average, maybe a little above average on a good day.
Who is your favorite character?
i’m most comfortable with ken, but dudley, yun, and akuma are really fun to use…
What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
n/a
Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
rock paper scissors
Any rituals you have for before a match?
no
Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
no
How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
with the person i’m playing against, it would be distracting, and also weird. if it’s others around me, i don’t care, unless they’re talking about my match… then i get self-conscious.
How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
depends. real life distractions (phone call, knock on the door, laundry, eating) are hard to tend to. people talking on their mics in 3soe, i put the tv on mute. someone spectating on ggpo, i just get self-conscious.
What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
gaijinblaze has some good points on this. it’s an unfortunate reality that i’m ok with because i like playing people online. i might even say it’s helped me to watch out for things that could just as easily happen in real life, such as dash-up throw situations, but are more frustrating because they’re abused with lag.
Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
no. if i’m bored, i’ll tinker with a character that seems fun to play (oro, ibuki, elena)
Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
there’s been a bunch of random things i’ve done before seeing others do them. but basically, no. one thing i used to do is red parry the 3rd hit of a blocked shippu, because i could more easily pick up on the rhythm after the first 2 hits.
What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
having an “it’s not over till it’s over” attitude; making observations about what’s killing me and taking steps to stop them; realizing i need to try new things instead of simply always protecting myself. why did it take 3s for me to learn these things? because i’m dumb.
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
yes. there hasn’t been another game since i picked up 3s that has been remotely as interesting.
messed up
I cant believe you chose ps3 over xbox, wuziq.
**When did you start playing?
**I first played 3S on Dreamcast before I even knew there was a real community for fighting games. Seriously though, I didn’t really start playing until I had a computer good enough for GGPO, so… 2009?
**Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
**ST, MvC2, KI, XvSF, MSH, KoF, DS3, etc.
**Why did you pick up this game?
**I heard it was the deepest fighting game ever and decided that I had a brain big enough for it.
**Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
**Same as above. I heard it was deep and I wanted to see what was so deep about a 2D fighter.
**Who is your rival?
**I’m not good enough to have a rival yet. All my local players hate 3S lol.
**Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
**Either slightly above or slightly below. None of the players around here play 3S, but they have better fundamentals than I do, so I can win and lose.
**Who is your favorite character?
**Yang or Alex.
**What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
**Two and out at NWM2 in O.SFIV. I’ve never entered a 3S tournament.
Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)
Jeopardy. You have to apply what you know and guess right, because Alex Trebeck just wants to fuck you over.
**Any rituals you have for before a match?
**DRUM THE BUTTONS
**Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
**NO JUST DRUM THE FUCKING BUTTONS
**How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
**Do it. I don’t care. I have earbuds in.
**How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
**They haven’t bothered me before I started with earbuds. People moving behind the monitor though? Yeah, fuck that shit.
**What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
**Lag is the worst. Real lag? Yeah, good luck blocking Cr.MK.
**Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
**Nope. I don’t like Twelve or Necro or shotos, or Yun. That leaves me with what? Chun, Hugo, Makoto, Dudley, Q, and Urien? Oh, and I guess Ibuki, too.
**Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
**Pfft nope. I’m hella boring in this game.
**What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
**Nothing, unfortunately.
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
Absolutely. Until I’m too old to move my stick around.
you forgot oro.
You still haven’t fought me in 3SO or on GGPO Brit. Someday we must do battle. Also like everyone at ACU plays 3S now, so you should stop by and challenge people to GGPO matches. They’re all greatly muchly bad.
I don’t understand what makes Online Edition so ostensibly horrible. I played my first ranked match today and I was parrying things on reaction with no dropped combos or inputs on a yellow connection.
Anyway, on with the show.
When did you start playing?
My first entry into the competitive scene was in 2007, but I followed the game from 2004 until then.
Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
No.
Why did you pick up this game?
I’ve always loved the series and, upon playing this one, found it to be my favorite.
Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
EVO Moment #37
Who is your rival?
As if.
Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
There are players around me?
Who is your favorite character?
Elena.
What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
I’ve never entered one for this game.
Perception: What is this game most like, to you?
It’s very much like poker to me.
Any rituals you have for before a match?
I breathe and stretch.
Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
I’ll let you know once I enter one.
How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
I don’t do it. I put headphones in my ears. I don’t mind, though.
How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
I’m hard to distract when I’m playing a video game.
What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
What does ‘wrench’ mean?
Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
There are a number of characters in whom I’m just disinterested. I don’t want to play Yun, Ibuki, or Urien, for instance, because I don’t like high-execution characters.
Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
I use Mallet Smash more than the average Elena player, and I’ve seen few others who use all three of Elena’s Super Arts with a fairly even spread.
What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
I learned patience from this game, and the reason I’m picking it back up after a very long absence is because I want to relearn that patience.
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
Yes.
brit mckay
Yeah, talking to bmckay. He’s an oooooooold time member of our site. Used to hang out in our chatroom forever. Life takes its toll tho, so he hasn’t been around in a while and AC sorta sucks nowadays. I’ve known him for like six years or more now.
Honestly, ACU should probably just be called SFU or FGU or something. No one plays AC. Too many play SF4.
oh whoa i didn’t know he was also an AC person.
maybe verdict day won’t suck.
are there more of your people lurking…
Not in the 3S boards, no. At least I don’t think so. There are definitely some in the SF4 boards and maybe some of the other game’s sections. Most don’t lurk SRK though. They’re all lazy fks who sit in chat all day and AFK for like 300 hours, then play some SF. They’re also bad at learning, so generally they don’t look up advice. They mostly don’t seem to care too much about being great though. Most of them just enjoy playing the games, which makes me happy cuz that’s what I mostly want anyway. Though there are times when I really wish they’d improve some.
I’ve gotten them to play the older games a good bit though (A2/A3/ST/3S) and right now some of them are playing KoF97/98 with me on GGPO every few days.
Honestly though, I can’t say how many of them could be lurking the SRK boards in general. We basically have people who play every fighting game ever and are all fkn terrrrrrrrrible at all of them. It’s absolutely magnificent.
<3
niji is actually really bad and makes fun of acupeople because he cant beat any of us
When did you start playing?
2008 right after graduating from college
Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
MvC2 and guilty gear
Why did you pick up this game?
It was the first game I had access to for online play when my friend introduced me to ggpo
Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
Parries and genei-jin combos
Who is your rival?
Any player who’s really good with low tier characters
Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
I’m decent, but only because Yun is OP
Who is your favorite character?
I main Yun but Yang is actually my favorite character
What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
1st at a local tournament
Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)
I don’t think it’s like any other game in general, but like every other game you get better with experience
Any rituals you have for before a match?
I rap the buttons like I’m playing the drums, like actually playing the drums.
Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
Stare at the screen without emotion ala Daigo
How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
It’s all good
How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
Just don’t touch me, and it’s all good
What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
Lag sucks, but if you’re choosing to play online you don’t have a right to complain. Just keep in mind that you know how to play offline as well. Go to your local arcade and pat yourself on the back with a smile
Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
I’ll fess up, outside of about 6 characters, I can not name the normals that the rest of the cast have. I haven’t taken the time to learn in-depth most of the 3s characters, and it definitely works against me
Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
Not relying on running away to build meter with Yun, which definitely work against me sometimes
What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
How to pick up girls
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
F***king love this game
When did you start playing?
I don’t even remember, I guess it was like 2010 or something like that (by playing I mean the time when I fell in love with it and started playing it a lot) before I had some contact with the game, played it like a couple of times on MAME when I first discovered arcade emulation was possible + knew about the great sprites because I used to be a MUGEN fuckhead. 3s really got me into fighting games and I became good at those because of third strike
Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
when it comes to fighting games I only pressed buttons with my neighbord at various games. Used to play a lot of Melty Blood before discovering 3s
Why did you pick up this game?
It made sense, seemed fluent, awesome music, awesome art, cool characters, wakeup throw worked when I started to play.
Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
FIERCE FIERCE UPPERCUT SUPER, Dudley
Who is your rival?
I am my biggest rival
Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
I have good ideas but I am not consistent,I think too much and don’t play the game often enough these days to be awesome at it
Who is your favorite character?
That’s a hard question, I like half of the cast a lot. It really depends on my mood, if I want to just dick around I’ll play Yun, green ken is my best character and I like him a lot.Dudley is my favorite I guess
What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
I never entered a 3s tournament because the scene in my country was already dead when I joined.
Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)
I have no clue what to answer. I guess some gambling game like mahjong. Maybe Quake …
Any rituals you have for before a match?
I do super motions and press buttons
Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
…
How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
I dislike it unless it’s like only a quick exchange of words
How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
During a normal match - whatever. But if it’s like a money/grudge match or a tournament game I try to get the person to shut up
What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
Changes the game a lot.A lot more wild, animalish - you have to rely on instincts a lot more than on your reflexes.
It’s a different dimension and honestly I cant cope a lot with it.
Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
No, not all characters appeal to me. This is the kind of game where I dont want to be a jack-of-all-trades , + my dedication to the game isn’t enough for me to even consider something like that
Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
I react to every jumpback with a dash, whiff throws sometimes before someone wakes up
What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
Nothing in this world is unequivocal, helps me a lot with logical decisions . Third Strike also teached me to be good in several other fighting games
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
For life
vandarkholme it’s interesting you say 3s is like Quake. Neiman has mentioned this to me a few times and I’m curious, could you draw the comparisons from your perspective?
