The negative effects of dividing the community, and the losers that benefit from it

Anyone else play TF2? I got sucked into that game and logged in over 500 hours into it. I did a few online tournaments and my Spy would get nailed by Pyro’s. Spy is still my favorite class, my 2nd favorite is the Heavy and he took some skill to use right.

Low tier whore for life lol. TF2 was fun though, before they ruined it with constant updates and retarded items.

i thought this was for new people only but since some other geezers did it…

When did you start playing?
i played 2nd Impact for the first time in 1998. didn’t really play 3S until i got it on dreamcast in 2000. i became aware of high-level play and versus city cabs because of the arcade in a cantonese-based mall in toronto in late 2003 or early 2004, so i started playing the game properly around that time. i didn’t know that toronto had a good reputation for 3S.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
i was a big fan of MK as a kid, and played some console SF2CE on the side, but i was too young for arcades. later on, i became interested in casual arcade play during the soul edge/calibur and tekken 2/3 heyday. after this phase fizzled out, i mostly played soul calibur and other stuff by myself on dreamcast.

Why did you pick up this game?
i tried 2I because it looked like how i imagined a 2D sequel to existing SF should look, even though nobody was playing it. i liked that ryu looked older and wore a grey outfit when you picked him with jab for some reason. the characters seemed a lot more stylish and modern than the 2 gang. i initially didn’t care for 3S as much, but when i met a friend in high school who knew what fighting games were, he’d tell me to bring 3S to his house and we became attached to it. he also showed me the chinese mall and my first 3S videos (mopreme’s total ryu, shirube 2, sbo1, tosf parry exhibition, some socal stuff). our minds were blown.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
i feel like you have more direct access to the opponent’s mind instead of having to first drag yourself through some thick, obstructive mesh of move properties programmed in by the developers. it does decrease the importance of character matchups, but i don’t consider that to be an objective drawback. i prefer that the character is of secondary importance to the player in 3S. it’s also interesting that an additional mind game layer (due to parrying) is superimposed onto the standard spacing/hitbox interaction layer, so you have to make two concurrent decisions at once, and consider more than one outcome even if spacing is perfect. when i first started, i thought excessive parrying was cool, but i’m in the exact opposite camp now. loved the music too. the mars colony release of the soundtrack was the first item i ever got online.

Who is your rival?
right now, no one.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
good by north american standards… if that means anything. i don’t compare myself to anything anymore since i only play for fun now, nor do i like trying to quantify skill on arbitrary scales.

Who is your favorite character?
probably urien. this does not mean that i agree with how all urien players use him.

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
1st in an arcade tourney in 2007, but it was a ranbat, so i didn’t get any money. it was a big deal for me because it confirmed that i could overcome my lack of confidence, inconsistency, and being a choke artist. an accomplished toronto player once joked with me that “there’s a skill line here, and gaijin can beat everyone above it, and loses to everyone below it.” that really stuck with me because of how hilariously true it seemed.

Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)
i think the decision-making framework has a lot in common with virtua fighter.

Any rituals you have for before a match?
at home, i have a bad habit of raising up and fiddling with the dust cover of the stick with my pinky and thumb. sometimes i even do it during gameplay. i also have crappy circulation and my hands get super cold when nervous, so i often warm them up by holding my forearms or neck. this was a big problem for me in tournaments.

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
not that i can recall, unless freaking out counts.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
between games is fine. i probably wouldn’t like people talking to me during gameplay.

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
haven’t encountered any so far, but i think it would annoy me.

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
it’s complicated. 3S, by design, can never be excellent online even with perfect netcode. i laugh whenever people imply that matches would suddenly matter if the netcode was better or even “perfect.” conversely, i also think there are a ton of scrubs using lag as a scapegoat for their bad attitudes and lack of skill, even though they’re bad players, so it goes both ways. basically i disagree with everyone’s interpretation of online. my general rule is: the result doesn’t matter, the decisions do. if my opponent clearly knows how to play and makes decisions that are sensible and grounded, i don’t bother building any kind of bullshit conclusion about their skill level based on who wins.

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
i use most of them already, but there are some i don’t like that much, so no.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
i’ve had some complex ideas, but anything i’ve thought of, i’m sure there are players in japan who have already thought of similar things.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
nothing that i’m aware of. 3S is 3S. maybe you could say i learned how a double elim bracket works. i think it’s pretty cute that some people think they’re improving their real-life reaction speed by doing hit confirms.

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
for now, i guess so. whether or not i keep playing doesn’t have anything to do with interest from others. frankly, i haven’t played at the arcade in a couple years, and online there are lots of players (some of whom are good, unfortunately) who have disgusting attitudes, so i mostly play just to pass the time. i don’t know if toronto 3S can be restored given the current fighting game landscape. even a lot of things on this board annoy me now. instead of wanting to play the game all the time like i used to, i’ll get irritated by it if i play it too much, so i only really enjoy it if i take breaks from it. i’m not going to rule out the possibility of quitting 3S if i think it’s the right thing to do.

Spy is probably low-tier but one well placed Spy can be absolutely devastating… Then some guy turns around at the last second for no reason and you don’t get a Backstab… Fuck.

Which don’t you like much?

tribe 4 lyfe

Got an extra question for all 3rd Strikers:
What do you do as a job, tell a bit about it?

I want to see if we’re representing all the social classes.

I’m unemployed

When did you start playing?
I’ve been playing SF3 for fuor years, but the total time would be less than five months, for I’ve been on education for three years during that period.
By the way, the college entrance examination was just the greatest, No.1 difficulty, mission impossible in our students’ eyes… I hate that, after I gave up SF3s to prepare the senior high school exam for nearly a year I found out sadly that the whole senior high school life was a preperation for the test which would happen three years later.
And my fellow students who were playing SF3s with me on SupARC were talking about how free they were.
Oh I wanted to use a double Shin-Hadouken on them.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
Of course. Even though I’m a 96’s, my facourite games were those old ones, which means while others were playing COD I could be happy with my Duck Hunt on NES.
By the way, I was playing SSFIIT while others were interested with KOF '97. Can’t understand why they were so fascinated with '97 while there was already '03 then.

Why did you pick up this game?
I was shocked by the differences between SSFIIT and SFII, and wanted to see more SF series then. It was also when SF3s could be emulated, if my memories goes right.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
I was a Daigo fan when I was playing SSFIIT.
And then I saw a video, about how he did parried all Chun Li’s SA2 and did a great, amazing, bizzare turnabout. The only problem was that I’m a Ryu Player, but who cares.

Who is your rival?
My friend, and it was me who often wins.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
My neibourhood and my school, 'cause everybody around me playing FTG were talking about that KOF '97.
And I just lured them to play SF3s and Z3 which I was winning all the time at first.
Hmm. It seems that I was a bad guy^_^

Who is your favorite character?
Ryu! Ryu Hoshi!
And Sakura Kasugano and Gouki and Ken Masters and Hibiki Dan and Sean and…(being slammed away)

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
…I was in the winning team when there was a tournament in SF Forum on Baidu.

Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)

Well to me… It’s like a super-speeding-fingers games? (Unsure)
I’ve always belived that Sf3 was SF3 itself.

Any rituals you have for before a match?
Mourn a little while for my poor appearance.
Then slam the keyboard.(;-C)

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
Doing a Super Art Cancel for three times would be okay.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
Super Puzzle Fighters II Turbo <I Just Want You to Know>
I couldn’t go to Youtube because of CGW.

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
A lot, especially when I was using Denjin Hadouken, I would always be starring at the roof, and I still don’t know the reason “SIGH”

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
Bring them on! I’m a newbie so everything would just be fine!

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
Yeah. Actually I’m a good Sean player on SupARC.
I doubt if my Sean acts better than my Ryu. What a sad story.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
As I’ve mentioned above, it seems that my Sean acts better than my Ryu.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
Bring all the attacks on me and I’ll parry them. Even when there’s difficulties ther’s always hope; life is a choise of infinity.
Be brave, have pluck. Never give up even when it’s the last moments. And what’s more, life is full of surprises.
Surely I’ve learnt a lot from SFs…

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
Of course. After that damngood doublethink college entrance exam I’d be having lots of time to play with Ryu!

I own and operate a liquor store.

^ You be making that good cashhhh.

i prepare dog photos for calendars by erasing their penises and collars (actual current project/job)

I’m surprised at how many of the die hards/oldschool guys here got into the game around 04/05. I would have guessed most of you guys got into it around 2000.

ports are very helpful.
i doubt there was really any competition in the US in 99,00,01.
other games with more players already existed and had machines all over the place.

When did you start playing?
Late 05/early 06. I first played it at AI, I used to play the music games there, and then my ex-girlfriend pointed out 3s to me. She asked me to beat the guy on the machine and so I tried. I lost but the experience really stuck with me. The week after that I bought it for the ps2 and practiced. A friend of mine then introduced me to Regency Fun Center where I met the people that would eventually, like two weeks, drive me to FFA and get me started on my competitive run of the game.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
I play a lot of games. It used to be any game, then rpgs/fighting games/platformers/party games. 3s is the only one that I actually play competitively, though.

Why did you pick up this game?
Because I liked parry. Funny enough, the first time I saw parry was Chun Li parrying a random fireball. I sat down and started trying to use her standing strong on fireballs to parry them but it didn’t work! A few weeks later I asked some random fob, I think it was Liang(Ryocho) but it might’ve been horribleDudley, and he told me tap forward. Also told me to stop using spinning kick because it was a shitty move. He got hit by it like 60 times.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
It was just parry in general. Daigo’s parry was the parry that opened my eyes to the true power of the technique. The way Justin didn’t immediately super was astounding to me. I sat there thinking “oh no this guy still beat him after that intense comeback!” and then he supers, I groan, and Daigo Parries. I blew up. The surge of emotion was just too much to let go. This led to mindgames, and after that I was hooked.

Who is your rival?
It used to be FFA Vinny but since he sucks, I have made Yi and Pyro my rivals.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
Among my friends, I’m the best. Among my arcade, probably still the best. At FFA, definitely top 8. In the states, top 3 Kens and probably still top 8 overall. At least on arcade. Currently Champion of the Universe at Super Arcade.

Who is your favorite character?
I think Oro is fucking sick. Yun is the most fun. Ken is the most unpredictable(if you ignore low forward). Dudley the most devastating.

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
I’ve won all of our friendly tournaments. Second at friend’s houses. I think fifth in a team tournament (me and Ryan). I don’t know if I’ve ever made top 8 at FFA. 2nd at Regency. I don’t really remember anymore. I never really kept track. Always wanted everyone to stop playing like little bitches so we could start up casuals where everyone stops giving a fuck and actually plays.

Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)**
I think 3s is like rock, paper, scissors. It has semblance to Chess in that eventually you start matching routines and adjusting through divergence to throw off the player but that’s SF in general. Unlike most SF games, in 3s, there will always be a victor or a trade. At least that’s how it was when I played.

Any rituals you have for before a match?
After picking my character I like to match the rythm of the music as I press jab, forward, fierce, roundhouse, strong, short. I like to practice my low forward hit-confirms during the character face-off screen, too.

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
Nope.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
I hate trying to concentrate on my match and listen out for hit confirms and then having someone pop up next to me and talking over the in-game sounds. Other than that, you can’t really keep people from talking. It’s their prerogative or whatever.

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
When I’m in the zone I forget anything else exists but usually hearing my name called during a match will pull me out and I’ll get lost ^_^"

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
Wrench. It can be an obstacle when the players come to an agreement

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
I think I already have the basics down for every character, but in regards to finding sggk quality tactics for each character, No, thanks. Maybe for the ones that wouldn’t require me to just wait around all day, sure.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
I think I’m the only person in the America that hit-confirms low forward xx lp uppercut with Ken.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
that rock paper scissors mindset. Some people call it critical thinking.
**
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?**
For the rest of my life, probably. So long as there are people to play with. Plan on getting a cab as soon as I have room for it.

I cant wait for this book

I like the critical thinking part, for I happened to be on a class recently when my teacher describes critical thinking as rock paper scissors.
By the way it’s also my opinion on SF3s.

I think 3s players represent all of them. To hear about someone from the top down, thus being rich and they will probably never waste time on forums, we do have some evidence in a crazy story.

Remember the story about KSK and his boss? In order to get a raise he would have to play a FTsome number of games set. Boss played Ken IIRC.

Also the boss acted like a “boss” and put the stack of money in front of KSK. You’re playing for this.

KSK didn’t get a raise that day.

:frowning:

Is there a discount for buying in bulk in order to play Drunk Strike?

;o

You can only get a discount at my store if you defeat me in a Hopscotch match.

Be warned, I don’t run 10 hops like those noobs at your local playground. Mine are 100-200 squares and you have to make turns. None of that straight lines only shit that trash players use. Don’t come into this expecting NASCAR, cuz what you gon get is F1 Racing. You better know the course or you’ll be moon dust.
