The negative effects of dividing the community, and the losers that benefit from it

So why haven’t we made a questionnaire thread for all the local players. I’d like to get some insight from you guys.

There’s way too much optimal talk but none of the substance to show for it. So how about we just pick each other’s brains and figure the rest out for ourselves.

What

Does this mean you want someone to interview you as well, Dander? :stuck_out_tongue:

Dander is an attention-whore.

Like this post if you agree.

Not really, I’m asking for insight. I provide insight without request.

hmmm…

i dunno i think ryu far fierce is really interesting.
ken too but ken doesn’t have the sickest target combo in the game to go with it.

often the range right when you get far fierce instead of close fierce means you whiff over someone after parry or someting. close fierce has a pretty big area that it hits but far fierce is very high, whiffs on crouchers except maybe hugo.

it’s all hit though. anything that someone does aside from a low poke is going to get eaten alive.
difficult to use though. quite a gamble with sort of meh payoff, at least against the usual suspects.
i’m thinking it’s probably a decent move against the likes of alex, dudley, hugo, q…maybe makoto (wonder if hugo can connect moonsault after parry against a well spaced far fierce).

Wait I thought this guy quit or some shit

He only quit Smash. You had 10 years to ask him anything about that!

both those are awesome.
but i’m white, so

In all seriousness I like this idea Dander.
The problem lies in the fact that it would have been dope to do about four or five years ago. Don’t mean to totally shoot it down because even if a few of the interviews were sorta retrospective it would be cool to hear history and perspectives from some of the more well known dudes who were at ffa, denjin, ai, etc. Honestly it would be cool to get some of the really strong Brazil, UK, Australia, Canada players too. Finding all the old retired north american names would be a challenge. Strap on your head band and pack that duffle bag my friend.

I’m not talking about retrospect, though. I am simply trying to see how the different players think so I can stop forcing myself to play the match-up or without forcing the opponent to play the right game even. Call it arrogant but I’m really just trying to get to know my opponent.

GGPO is barely playable, oe is not playable at all. Arcade 3s is slowly disappearing because everyone refuses to see the danger of the formers. So…here goes then:

When did you start playing?

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?

Why did you pick up this game?

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?

Who is your rival?

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?

Who is your favorite character?

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?

Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)

Any rituals you have for before a match?

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?

I know this isn’t as cool as a Japanese players answers but reading what sugiyama has to say about his community, as cool and relatable as his responses are, I can’t take anything from it because I already feel that way. But I don’t know you guys the way he knows his community, so this is an attempt at bringing us closer together as a community.

I was playing OE last night, and well…yup.

I miss you, SYL :’(

When did you start playing?
I started playing in 2003 when I saw the machine nearby the Initial D machine. Everyone was playing and I thought I’d give it a try.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
Fighting game-wise, I played Alpha 3 and CVS2 before really diving into 3S.

Why did you pick up this game?
To be fair, I really only started getting competitive when I saw two videos: the Daigo parry on Justin Wong and the first vid that FFA released with Rockefeller’s commentary on it.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
It was honestly just my dream to get onto video and play my best with the world watching. I wanted to make it to that big stage, and I knew that it’d take a long time.

Who is your rival?
I really don’t have anyone I consider a rival. Unless you count being paired up in tourneys with ericxchin ALL THE GOD DAMN TIME.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
Amongst the players around me? Considering I’m SoCal, I still feel myself as a mid-tier player. I’m still far away from being considered a top player, knowing that other players play harder than I do or have more experience than I do. But I consider myself a decent player.

Who is your favorite character?
I honestly want to say Alex but I’m kinda growing bored with him. I really like Yun, though. Constant pressure, abusable meter, etc.; the only problem for me is his lack of stamina, but if he had health on par with Ryu, that might be unfair.

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
At the local and convention level, I’ve won a few tournaments. Ranking Battle-wise, highest I’ve gotten was tied for 7th. On the national stage, I tied for 13th at the SF25th Anniversary tourney in Los Angeles.

Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
Poker. Except I know my opponent’s hand; it’s up to me, now, to know how he’s going to utilize his hand.

Any rituals you have for before a match?
I usually like to take my time when sitting at the character select screen. It helps to not pick the wrong character/super. Also, it helps me destress and calmly think about the match ahead.

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
I’ll usually clap my hands and rub them vigorously to warm them up.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
Sometimes, it helps to get into your opponent’s head! I often joke around and tell my opponents that I really hate them. Obviously, I don’t, but it’s funny to see their reactions sometimes. I usually never discuss strategy during a tourney match, though. I’m there to win.

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
Stuff like the crowds and what not, you have to deal with. That’s the environment that you’re gonna play in, so as a player, you must be ready and willing to take on whatever the outside stimuli are. I usually put my phone on Do Not Disturb so nothing comes up when I play. Beyond that, I’ll take off any watches/bracelets/etc. on my hands. REMOVE THE LIMITERS.

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
I don’t like it at all. It’s a huge obstacle that you’ll have to get over. In a fighting game, your shit has to be timed properly for it to work (hence the reason for one-frame links that lead to big damage. You practice it, you’ll be able to use it.) Lag takes away from both players and it renders one’s tools harder to use. On top of that, it allows people to get away with things they normally wouldn’t. Punishing a simple sweep shouldn’t be hard, but the lag makes it harder to get the timing right, as an example.

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
No. Knowing that I’m not going to use every character, it’s useless for me to expend that much energy on every character. I’d rather focus on one or two, just to cover a few things with my matchups. That energy is also better used to learn how other characters work against mine and how to stop certain things. Knowledge of other characters is good, yes, but you can do much better with getting the most out of one character and going from there, in my opinion.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
I’d say no. The knowledge I have is shared around most, and Alex players really don’t have much to rely on.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
Better planning and how to control situations, as well as patience. I feel more willing to stare things in the face and time for the opportunity rather than rush recklessly. It’s about smart play, right?

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
Definitely. 3rd Strike gave me something to focus on, and it’s a game I really enjoy playing, as a destresser and as a motivator.

When did you start playing?

  • Sometime mid 2010 on GGPO.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?

  • I have played many games before this one, including many fighting games!

Why did you pick up this game?

  • It was an SF game I had somehow not played up to that point (all of SF3 series) and it had Ibuki, who I wanted to learn to use in AE.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?

  • It was an SF game I had somehow not played up to that point (all of SF3 series) and it had Ibuki.

Who is your rival?

  • Dander.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you?

  • Shortest and somewhere to the left.

Who is your favorite character?

  • Ibuki.

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?

  • Ibuki.

What is this game most like, to you?

  • PvP Hopscotch.

Any rituals you have for before a match?

  • I diddle myself slightly.

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?

  • I diddle myself more than slightly.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?

  • I think it’s a fine thing to do, sure.

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?

  • I’m fine with people being all around you yelling, screaming, and slapping your back and stuff. Just no grabbing private parts or sitting on my lap. I also enjoy when smaller kids and children slowly slide their oversized heads in front of my screen (if they can get that high) because they’re getting into whatever arcade game I may be playing.

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?

  • I have mostly stopped caring. I used to get really mad about it and definitely viewed it as a wrench. Now I don’t really view it as an obstacle or a wrench, I honestly don’t care much about it anymore in 3S. I enjoy playing the game at its core and gave up having an image of skill to protect. I just play.

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?

  • No. Though I do play roughly 70% of the cast out of general pleasure.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?

  • Dropped inputs and combos.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?

  • s.MK > EX Tsumuji | It’s surprisingly useful and entertaining when someone isn’t ready for it. Remember to confirm the third slash! Do not use Raida IRL! Detonating a bomb in your hand is not a good idea.

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?

  • Yes. Probably for a very, very long time. It feels right.

I haven’t posted on SRK for awhile now.

When did you start playing?

  • 3s: 2004 but in the late 90’s, I played 2nd Impact at the laundry mat w/o knowing what the hell is “parrying” haha.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?

  • For FG’s: HSF/KI:G/MK 1,2 & Trilogy

Why did you pick up this game?

  • The simple fact that you can parry high and low’s. Plus, Makoto & Urien was an interesting character.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?

  • As stated above: parrying and the characters.

Who is your rival?

  • I have none because I’m a scrub.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you?

  • I consider myself okay but don’t have a great mindset because I get trigger happy with parrying and my hit-confirms are 50/50 haha.

Who is your favorite character?

  • TBH, I enjoy Chun Li, Urien, Gouki, Ken, and Dudley.

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?

  • I don’t wanna say it but back when RFC had those $2 tournies; I got tied with NakeSnakes haha. I think I got top 16 when Super Arcade held its first 3s:OE tourney.

What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.

  • I just see it as its own fighting game. I don’t want to relate it to any other games.

Any rituals you have for before a match?

  • I just wanna win and stay on the machine without getting anymore tokens haha.

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?

  • Not really, I just play my own game.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?

  • I don’t like talking before the match or even shaking hands. Who knows where them hands been touching lately. “Always wash your hands folks!” I think FG tournies have gotten to soft whenever I see it on stream.

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?

  • It doesn’t bother me because I usually play with my headphones on. I remember AI being hella loud and you had to bring your own earplugs haha.

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?

  • If you don’t have an arcade scene around you, I guess GGPO when 3s was popping or having casuals/sessions. I only play online for fun, even if there’s lag.

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?

  • I play all the cast just to get the feel of the characters potential and frame data.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?

  • For Chun Li, I enjoy low parrying and landing cLP-SA2 or linking her overhead - SA2 consistently.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?

  • There are unblockable setups with Urien which took me 2 years to figure out on a damn PS2 pad and I can kara grab/SRK.

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?

  • Hell yeahs!!! 3s forever!!!

PS:
Lenin, I bet you remember me back in the days “Robert” with my nephew at CERRITOS CC & RFC!!! Yes, I’m still a scrub haha. Does Tony or Bebop still play??? I haven’t gone to RFC since forever.

Thanks to all of you guys for making 3s popping to this very day.

I’ll answer this even though I’m not too important!

When did you start playing?
A few months before OE came out.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
Melee for somewhere around a decade.

Why did you pick up this game?
We rented Anniversary Collection for PS2 once because it had SF2 and we had fond memories. We tried 3s and thought the animation was really smooth and the game felt nice. Movement seemed really crisp. Moves felt powerful. It clicked with us immediately and we started playing on emulator and then PS2 until OE came out.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
Basically what I listed above. We weren’t aware of any of the big moments or cool parrying stuff, we just thought the game felt good in our hands.

Who is your rival?
My best friend. We play 3-5 days a week a few hours a day. So we know each other pretty well.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
I think I’m still pretty bad. There is a lot of stuff I still need to improve on and every facet of my game needs to improve.

Who is your favorite character?
I like Chun and Ken both a lot.

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
Have never entered one. I’ve played sets with local players but I think I missed the age of 3s tournaments here. They all play SF4 and Marvel now.

Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)
It reminds me of playing a musical instrument. How you approach them, what the route to improvement is, how your failures require you to be self-critical and introspective. Training mode is the practice room. If you suck at something execution wise you slow it down and speed it up gradually until you have it down, or you sit there figuring out what exactly your issue is and then come up with a plan to correct it. But the execution is only the groundwork for what really matters - the flow of the game itself in 3s, and the musical expression on your instrument. When you step into a match against a great opponent or step on stage to perform your music, you have already laid a rich groundwork of fundamental skills on which to draw from, but while you’re in that moment you draw on your creativity and try to make something that is genuinely interesting, and the others around you appreciate. I remember Tebbo saying once that 3s isn’t always about winning or losing but also doing something really cool. Music is the same way. You’re trying to make out of it more than the sheet music or the technical execution should suggest.

Any rituals you have for before a match?
I swirl the stick around and sometimes mash buttons. Nothing interesting. This kills me on GGPO and I end up with black lines half the matches.

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
I dunno yet.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
I suspect I wouldn’t like it but I wouldn’t make a big deal about it.

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
Trash talk is cool. Most stuff probably isn’t a big deal.

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
I think it makes the game a lot worse. There’s a level of trust and communication between two players, “this is what I will react to and punish” and you’re feeling each other out, what the boundaries are, and fighting for control of the match. Online lag betrays that communication and throws everything out of whack. So it ends up being a game of 50/50s, just running your offense, not really trying to understand the other player. There are a small handful of players I play online who I think really make an effort to play the game for itself, and I really enjoy playing against them.

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
Nope. I need to get legitimately good with my two characters before I invest time with anyone else and I’ve got a lot of work to do.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
I doubt it. I can’t really think of anything.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
Nothing, but it does work the other way around. I’ve taken the approach to learning a musical instrument and applied it to 3s.

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
Yes. As long as I have at least one other person to play against.

I was waiting for the IglooBob questionnaire! I always like to hear about the random ways people got hooked on 3rd and your music analogy! how about NoMoreFunland??

I’ll give this a shot.

When did you start playing?
Around 2007. Heard about the game and didn’t even know there was a 3rd Street Fighter game. Saw some screen shots and the Daigo video and got interested. CPS3 was cracked and emulation was possible. Downloaded it and just liked it.

Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
Anything playable in MAME. Around 04/05 or so I finally had a computer again but it was a POS. Nevertheless I was interested in Metal Slug and once I got the Neo Geo Bios file and found a good rom site I was hooked to SNK games. I got curious about fighters and wanted to actually learn how to do the special moves from Champion Edition. Around 06 I was on Kaillera a lot playing MVC1 and Garou and slowly learning the ropes. Quit MVC1 because of Striderine but stuck with Garou mostly.

Why did you pick up this game?
It was fun. And I loved the mindgames you could play in fighters. But a lot of fighters that I saw relied on one or two setups dominated by a few characters that destroyed everyone. The mechanics of 3S I thought were really interesting.

Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
The art style, the music, the characters, pretty much everything about it. There’s no other fighter like 3S. Even fighters with similar mechanics (Blitzkampf, Yatagarasu, Samurai Shodown V SP, Last Blade) are entirely different from 3S.

Who is your rival?
Most of the GGPO trolls it seems. They can’t stop talking about me. Though, one day I will have a ft10 offline match with Cruise. Hell, I’ll even send a few bucks to Hulk Hogan to do a promo (you know he needs the money right now) and even have a shout out to Aku.

Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
Mid-level at best. Wouldn’t put myself anywhere near So Cal or Japan level of 3S.

Who is your favorite character?
Uhm… Pretty obvious. I like Alex because he’s very unique and has an interesting if not complete play style. And how often do you see fast grapplers? At best you have some SNK characters but a majority of them are really hybrid characters. Dudley is fun too.

What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
Skip.

Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
(if Chess, though, can you compare your game to chess)

3S is like 3S. If you put a gun to my head or if I were explaining the appeal of it to someone who has never touched a fighter before I would emphasize the mind games.

Any rituals you have for before a match?
Not particularly.

Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
Skip.

How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
I’m not sure if this means that the players would be talking or spectators would be talking. I’m fine with players talking but if spectators are talking shit like oldschool MVC2 matches than I probably wouldn’t be into it and probably listen to music. Something like this:

Spoiler

http://youtu.be/MXDvR0jK0X8

How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
See above.

What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
The absolute worst thing about 3S. Very difficult to level up and at best it’s like playing Theory Fighter. At worst it’s a game of Roshambo.

Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
If I really like a game I mess around with most of the cast but I usually stick to 1-2 characters.

Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
Ever see Akira? Remember that awesome scene where Tetsuo freaks out and his body becomes an indestructible blob? That’s me when it comes to every Alex gimmick. If I see something from a match video or test something out in Practice mode I try it out and see what works.

What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
Everything. I can honestly say that I learned the entire meta game of fighters from 3S.

Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
Until I die most likely.

To me(minaga), Everyone is important.
