When did you start playing?
I started playing in 2003 when I saw the machine nearby the Initial D machine. Everyone was playing and I thought I’d give it a try.
Did you play any games before you played this one (3s)?
Fighting game-wise, I played Alpha 3 and CVS2 before really diving into 3S.
Why did you pick up this game?
To be fair, I really only started getting competitive when I saw two videos: the Daigo parry on Justin Wong and the first vid that FFA released with Rockefeller’s commentary on it.
Is there anything in particular about this game that drew you in (be very specific, like if parry, what parry)?
It was honestly just my dream to get onto video and play my best with the world watching. I wanted to make it to that big stage, and I knew that it’d take a long time.
Who is your rival?
I really don’t have anyone I consider a rival. Unless you count being paired up in tourneys with ericxchin ALL THE GOD DAMN TIME.
Where do you think you stand amongst the players around you? Not where are you in the leaderboards, where do you think you stand (only the girls will take offense to this, it’s an opinion after all)?
Amongst the players around me? Considering I’m SoCal, I still feel myself as a mid-tier player. I’m still far away from being considered a top player, knowing that other players play harder than I do or have more experience than I do. But I consider myself a decent player.
Who is your favorite character?
I honestly want to say Alex but I’m kinda growing bored with him. I really like Yun, though. Constant pressure, abusable meter, etc.; the only problem for me is his lack of stamina, but if he had health on par with Ryu, that might be unfair.
What is the highest ranking you’ve ever gotten in a tournament?
At the local and convention level, I’ve won a few tournaments. Ranking Battle-wise, highest I’ve gotten was tied for 7th. On the national stage, I tied for 13th at the SF25th Anniversary tourney in Los Angeles.
Perception: What is this game most like, to you? Do you think it shares anything in particular with something like fps games? maybe poker? Pachinko? Doesn’t have to be one of these, you can name your own.
Poker. Except I know my opponent’s hand; it’s up to me, now, to know how he’s going to utilize his hand.
Any rituals you have for before a match?
I usually like to take my time when sitting at the character select screen. It helps to not pick the wrong character/super. Also, it helps me destress and calmly think about the match ahead.
Anything like above but strictly for tournament situation?
I’ll usually clap my hands and rub them vigorously to warm them up.
How do you feel about talking during tournament matches?
Sometimes, it helps to get into your opponent’s head! I often joke around and tell my opponents that I really hate them. Obviously, I don’t, but it’s funny to see their reactions sometimes. I usually never discuss strategy during a tourney match, though. I’m there to win.
How do you feel about any kind of out of the game distractions during a match?
Stuff like the crowds and what not, you have to deal with. That’s the environment that you’re gonna play in, so as a player, you must be ready and willing to take on whatever the outside stimuli are. I usually put my phone on Do Not Disturb so nothing comes up when I play. Beyond that, I’ll take off any watches/bracelets/etc. on my hands. REMOVE THE LIMITERS.
What is your take on lag? More obstacle than wrench?
I don’t like it at all. It’s a huge obstacle that you’ll have to get over. In a fighting game, your shit has to be timed properly for it to work (hence the reason for one-frame links that lead to big damage. You practice it, you’ll be able to use it.) Lag takes away from both players and it renders one’s tools harder to use. On top of that, it allows people to get away with things they normally wouldn’t. Punishing a simple sweep shouldn’t be hard, but the lag makes it harder to get the timing right, as an example.
Do you plan on learning every character in the game to the extent that you know your current main?
No. Knowing that I’m not going to use every character, it’s useless for me to expend that much energy on every character. I’d rather focus on one or two, just to cover a few things with my matchups. That energy is also better used to learn how other characters work against mine and how to stop certain things. Knowledge of other characters is good, yes, but you can do much better with getting the most out of one character and going from there, in my opinion.
Anything interesting you do/use in your game that you think only you do?
I’d say no. The knowledge I have is shared around most, and Alex players really don’t have much to rely on.
What if anything in particular do you use outside of the game that you can honestly say you learned from 3s?
Better planning and how to control situations, as well as patience. I feel more willing to stare things in the face and time for the opportunity rather than rush recklessly. It’s about smart play, right?
Do you plan on continuing to play this game?
Definitely. 3rd Strike gave me something to focus on, and it’s a game I really enjoy playing, as a destresser and as a motivator.
