The music is (barely) passable (Music Discussion Thread)

Juri’s theme is even worst than Laura’s one. What a prowess!
At least it’s bad and period. Unlike a fad track which everybody pretends to love, aka Raaaashiiiiidoooooooooooo.

Blasphemy!

This.

SFII did this better than any FG. The music matches the characters and their countries of origin brilliantly. Maybe it’s implanted in my brain after 20+ years, but everything matches so well and it makes sense. Even though I don’t love the melodies of certain themes, like E. Honda, Zangief, or Blanka, but when I hear those songs and their instrument sets, I feel like I’m in a Japanese bathhouse, or a cold Russian construction site, or a jungle. That’s what it should be about.

Anyone can argue whether a track is good or not. I want the song to make sense for the character and/or stage.

They should of just added Max Payne 1’s Ragnarock for Juri since they decided to go this kind of route…

Juris theme has no personality just like her. She’s just a character for lame foot fetishists

That’s because they originally didn’t intend for SF2’s themes to be character themes. They were stage themes. But, not surprisingly, people came to associate the themes with the characters instead(because every character actually had their own stage back then), so they changed it going forward.

ST’s soundtrack is in my opinion still the best. It’s pretty much perfect.

3rd Strike and SFV both are second on my list but they both have some questionable stuff in their sleeves. For instance 3S’ Makoto, Urien and Remy theme are just lackluster. It’s also kind of a weakness that multiple characters have some same themes.

For other games, SFIV was either hit or miss. While their were good track like Sakura’s or Rufus (or for instance Gen’s that in my opinion beats Alpha 2 hands down), remixes like DeeJay’s were disappointing.

Alpha 3’s soundtrack, while having few good ones (Ryu, Zangief, Karin, Vega) it was somehow repetitive. Never understood why it’s been so loved.

Yes, and I vote for this. SF3 did this, SF4 did this (although I think in 4 you could switch from stage or character theme in the options).

Last night, I heard Juri’s theme on Guile’s Air Force Base. It made no sense. It was awful.

Eh, I much prefer themes be linked to characters, rather than stages. But SF4 and 5 does both, so it’s win-win.

I would say SF5 music is better than SF4 and SFA3 yes.

All this music, we need music select at the select screen. Also would like character select before picking a stage too.

Nah, I just don’t like shit music.

3S soundtrack was utter garbage.

I also hate most hip hop, so listening to some dude mumbling off tempo to terrible lyrics doesn’t impress me. Sorry.

A3’s music, on the other hand, had a definite energy to it. Lots of people hated it, but I liked most of the tunes.

Okay but…there’s really not much hip hop in 3S outside of the title theme.

Sf3 was dnb and jazz/footwork.
Alpha 3 was all about that industrial noise.

Alpha 3 was all about sounding awful

Or you know, actually like good music instead of that POS

i know right?
She should look like this instead

/sarcasm

Pretty much this, and one big beef with SF2 themes. They are very good at depicting the stages, but fail at representing the characters and worse, have a neutral mood and slow pace that has nothing to do with an actual unsanctioned fight. They don’t prompt you to beat face, they almost dissuade you. Take Vega for example: the theme is very fitting of the scene with the flamenco girls dancing in the background, but tells absolutely nothing about a murderous psycho fighter with a penchant for blood and a obsession of beauty. Or Sagat: by SF2 he’s still the bad guy with a broken pride represented by his scar and looking for a rematch with his newly gained Tiger Uppercut, then you have a soothing theme which best motivates you to take a seat and appreciate the landscape. Some of those themes like Blanka’s or Honda’s are almost Muzak like: if they represent the characters it is because those have a bland cardboard personality to begin with.

Personally I find Guile, Balrog, Zangief and Cammy as the best stage-character-music combos. The rest should have better been kept to SF2 or at best had Alpha 2 as their first and last return.

I absolutely agree that that’s a problem when it happens, but I think SF2 mostly avoids doing it.

Sagat’s theme is absolutely the worst offender. It’s way too laid back for fight music, or for his character.

Dhalsim’s is the same way, but that’s actually totally fitting. Because even when he’s fighting, he’s not really fighting. Which is something that makes Dhalsim a shitty character, but makes his shitty theme totally appropriate.

I don’t agree with you about Vega or Blanka’s theme. Honda’s was, but the SF4 version totally fixes that. Balrog’s was the same way. Great song, not a good fight theme, and not a very fitting theme for Balrog, SF4’s version TOTALLY is though.

Honda’s is among my favorite themes, but I loathe the character… unless he gets a SFV-type makeover – not that I desire to see him appear though, mind you… But I really like his music. It’s really cool fight music where it’s not about aggression or brawn but tactics and strategy.

I feel like I’m the only one here that doesn’t mind chill sounding music in a fighting game. I like themes Jazzy NYC, Sean’s 2I theme and Ibuki’s.

I’m sure you aren’t.

For me, it’s just, I think fight music should sound like, you know, FIGHT music. It should sound like music that plays during a fight scene in an action movie.

Softer songs can still have a place in fighting games. Like during cutscenes, menus, etc. Cammy can have her slow remix when she’s sitting around pondering what family means, but when she’s kicking Vega in the face, I want the music to reflect that.
