The music in SF4 doesn’t even feel like music meant for a fighting game, it sounds like it was composed for a 3 year olds’ action adventure game. The music in SF4 like you said, has no personality, it just sounds like background music to some low budget Pokemon ripoff. Sure Third Strike had music that sounded a bit casual in comparison to a lot of other fighting games, but at the very least each theme felt like it had some sort of presence, it had character to it, plus as good as the themes from SF2 are, they’re still worn out, so coming up with new, creative themes like Kens’ or Akumas’ was a great idea. In SF5, the music is much more bearable than previous themes like Training Stage or the godawful Seth theme, but it’s still pretty boring, aside from a few themes here and there. They should take some hints from the Alpha soundtrack, it’s got the kind of energy they’re looking for, or try to come up with a new theme like they did in Third Strike. Either way, I’m glad they stopped putting out COMPLETE garbage like in SF4.
I think more people will be appreciative of this OST when they look back on it. I just listened to SFII, 3S, A3, and IV, and it’s arguable that only SFII beats it in terms of the OST as a whole. 3S has several iconic ones but it has more misses than V so far IMO. Those three are all up there though. The other two at most had half the tracks hit.
I think it’s great they got so many top composers to work on this together. Now it’s apparent why the direction of so many of the songs sound so different. Kind of a bummer if not everyone can get that soundtrack though.
The stage themes have better the rythms but their potential was wasted by implementing the six beginning of the round - low life transitions which forces them to be presented in very short loops instead of lenghtier and more natural composition. Ironically, the character themes which are the ones without any forced transitions are overall so bad or bland that I would rather listen a single stage loop than them. Using the SF2 themes for the umpteenth time is the definition of uninspired.
General reception for Ryu’s theme (outside of this thread) has been pretty good. Genereal reception for the whole OST has been mostly good. This thread just isn’t the best place to find people that like the SFV OST and would like to discuss it. We do exist, though.
I never understood why people consider SF3 soundtrack good. Other than the character select, Dudley’s theme and arguably Alex’s theme, the whole soundtrack is a bunch of duds. Like so goddamn bad. Down there with alpha 3. Just awful.
SF5 has a few bad themes too. Cammy’s is an abomination. Zangief’s is by far the worst rendition it ever had. The tempo is too slow. Laura’s abuses the horn. Would be somewhat decent but the horn is too much. The rest have the best rendition they ever had.
Dhalsim, Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Nash, R. Mika, Karin, Vega, Birdie, Necalli, Rashid and Bison are pretty awesome.
