I loved that track in Ex plus alpha (which I think is the best SF EX game btw), but I never felt it fits Bison. His EX 2 theme (which later on went to Shadow Geist).
Bison’s theme doesn’t sound bad to me. It’s generally fine unless you hate/don’t care for electronic music which, judging by the fact that so many of you ignorantly equate anything electronic to dubstep (wub), a lot of people in this thread do.
The problem with Bison’s SFV theme is that it doesn’t fit him AT ALL. Every other theme matches their respective character’s design, behaviour and/or personality. What the fuck happened to Bison? He deserves better.

Nothing beats Bison’s original SFII theme. Just give him something more evil sounding, these excitable guitar riffs and high pitched synths would be better suited to a neutral or hero character.
One of the reasons why I like this new Karin Theme so much is that it tells me almost everything about her character. The elegance, the arrogance, etc, etc. I “feel” it. It just doesn’t seem like the same care has gone into the rest of the game’s remixed tunes, though I’m overall not a fan of remixes in general so maybe I shouldn’t be one to judge…
Actually no. Heavy guitars are very well suited for creating melodies for bosses. Of course if we’re talking about some RPG stuff - then sure, an orchestral soundtrack would work much better, but it’s a fighting game, the action is intended to be more active, listen to Awakening The Chaos from BlazBlue, that shit is perfect for a final boss
TTT2 had custom music, I hope they let you do this in SFV.
Anyway I think best boss music still belongs to Akuma’s theme from Super Turbo. No other boss music captures that “fight for your life” feeling that this music evokes for me.
Some do, and yeah it is all down to the melody, but in this case, no. I’m not really catching the evil boss vibe. It’s cool as a standalone theme in general though. Also Nu’s theme has such a powerful melody it’s got a bit more to it than Bison’s EX plus theme imo.
Actually, fuck that, it’s my favourite boss theme. I could talk about Devil’s T2 theme all day. Arakawa and Takayanagi had been composing tracks that were so ahead of its time, I can’t recall any other fg boss or sub-boss or whatever around that time period being given a theme that went the calming route, over being frantic with a high tempo. Yeah the latter is typical and what we “expect to hear”, the former, not so much typical, yet fits so perfectly. Namco were banging out innovation after innovation when it came to fg music and Devil’s theme (and Kazuya’s by extension) is amongst the best ever. The atmosphere they created with his theme was enough to send chills down your spine.
I know damn well the differences between oldschool dubstep, brostep, drum 'n bass, jungle, futurestep and all that shit. I think what most don’t like is that all that overproduced sound drowns out the melody, like less is more, which I do agree.
I’d love to believe that, I really would. But with how much the word “wub” has been thrown around in this thread, I just can’t. It just feels like a bunch of people that don’t like electronic music and are trying to justify it when there’s no need to. If there’s a sound you don’t like, just say that.
It’s difficult as hell to discuss subjective shit like this properly, but I don’t think any theme except for Bison’s can be considered “overproduced.” The melody is there for all of them and is prominent. The only ones that contradict that are Bison’s theme along with Rashid and Mika as we haven’t heard the last two themes in their entirety.
I think what’s really rubbing a lot of people the wrong way is how dynamic this soundtrack. A lot of people have a preferred SF sound (seems to primarily be Alpha 3, 3S and CvS2) and those SF OSTs were, for the most part, cohesive. SFV so far has given us songs that are grand, simple, fast, energetic, smooth and “overproduced.” There’s no unifying sound. Since SFV soundtrack is neither cohesive nor is it Alpha, 3S or CvS2, the comments in thread exist.
I personally don’t care too much about how unifying the music is; I just want it to be good. The stage themes are alright so far, nothing amazing. The brazil stage theme I do like a lot, it’s appropriate for a fighting game.
The character themes are hella overproduced. The point of a remix is to give new flavor or identity to an existing melody. These remixes sound like they have no direction to me. They’re just different but that’s it. They have no thing to say. Karin’s theme is the only one I actually enjoy. Necalli’s is ok but there is a lot of filler and no so much melody.
And this is why I said it’s “difficult as hell” to discuss this kind of thing due to how opinion-based it is. I really like the character themes and don’t think they’re overproduced and other people think the exact opposite. I do believe that both opinions are swayed by previous soundtracks. That goes both ways btw. While others clearly aren’t enjoying SFV’s music because it isn’t comparable to older games, I’m sure others are enjoying it because it isn’t comparable to previous games (I know I am). I like that you can acknowledge that what you’re saying is how you feel and won’t treat is as fact (unlike other posts in this thread).
I brought up unifying sound because that’s something that can’t be denied. It’s a valid reason for anybody that doesn’t enjoy the varying sounds we’ve gotten so far.
Yeah, I think the new main menu’s and the character select’s themes do clash with the rest of the soundtrack. It’s jarring.
On the other hand, Alpha 3’s ost does sound a bit too same-y for my tastes. There’s a bunch of great tunes and a lot of forgettable ones that, when listening back to back, sound like one whole long song.
