seriously, those bitches have NO CLUE what they are doing. If SFIV was at MLG, you’d get maaaaybe get Justin Wong play, maaaaybe they’ll fly Daigo over here, because they’re big names. And no one else good. Just a bunch of Counter Strike and Gears of Wars players who play a scrubby-ass game of SF on the side. There aren’t going to be good players in MLG, just sponsored one. So the player base is prob going to be, maybe JWong, a bunch of pasty CS nerds, a token black gamer, a “gamer chick” and an azn guy. All of them (except maybe Wong) will be the most terrible players. So say if SFIV was at MLG, yanno that our best players, prob Wolfkrone and Alucard, would have NO CHANCE of getting in? They’re not sponsored, even though they’re miles better than everyone who would be there.
MLG is also more concerned with “pretty faces” than actual good players. Street Fighter players aren’t usually the most TV-friendly people, putting it lightly. To be more blunt, I can guarantee that there will not be more than one black guy allowed into the tournament. Looking at the actual player base of SF, that’s a big problem. Again, MLG isn’t like we’re used to. Not anyone can just sign up. You either have to be semi-famous among nerds (popularity contest) or suck the right dicks.
And expect qualifiers, if there are even any at all, to be held ONLINE.
Seriously, the dudes who want SF at MLG have no clue what they are asking for. It’s true being at MLG would bring a lot of attention to fighting games, but not the kind of attention we want.
that show was a joke, but seriously, watch the 2009 world cyber games that happened in china. it was like the fuckin olympics of video games. I’m really confused on your logic on how having SF at MLG would be “bad attention”. When it comes down to it, it brings in people that would be interested in sponsoring players, tv attention, and more of a player base of people who will want to play in tournaments. Who cares if they suck, thats more people to play and come support the scene. Dude is an asshole, but Gene Simmons always said, “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”
P.S. Ill come to a tourney soon if i can drag myself away from this Starcraft2 beta. =P
Read up. Turns out that both Brawl and Tekken 6 qualifiers are being held after all… ONLINE. This is the same shit they did back when DOA4 was new. Granted, Brawl and DOA are joke games, so online qualifiers are pretty fitting, but MLG is really making it apparent that they don’t give a two shits about the difference between Smash, DOA, Tekken and SF. Do you really want SFIV and Tekken to be lumped in with the same bullshit rules and qualifications? To make it even MORE of a fucking joke, they use online rank to determine the winners of their qualifiers.
Funny thing is, MLG doesn’t actually even take the winners of these joke qualifiers to determine their finalists. MLG just slaps the label of “Pro” on the list of the people with the top 8 Online Rank. That just means they are now qualified to compete at MLG finals, but doesn’t necessarily mean that you will. It just means you maybe can go and get sponsorship like all the other “Pros” now. MLG already has a list of sponsored, TV-friendly “Pros” that get a free pass into the finals (a bunch of FPS players, a token black, a token azn, a couple token “gamer chicks,” and a couple other guys who might actually be good). So you got a bunch of scrubs in the finals and maaaaybe some good people.
Alright, w/e, lets say SFIV is at MLG Pro Circuit. We’re going to register for MLG by grinding our Rank in SFIV Championship Mode. Then we can go get sponsored by Doritos and compete in the finals against Rock Star Energy Drinks’ Pros! Whose down? I know I’m just fucking excited.
They learned it from yours’ truly. Why we goin’ so hard on MLG? Wouldn’t it be a good thing for SF to have that kind of exposure? Could you imagine watchin’ matches on ESPN, like they did that one time with Halo? That would be wild man. I’d love it.
i happen to like DoA more than Tekken…but meh…i guess i just like fast paced, smooth gameplay thats really visually pleasing with the best online play in 5 years still ._.
I’ve actually been playing some DOA4 recently, and I can’t call it terrible, but definitely can’t call it smooth. Fast, yeah, but the game just feels jittery as fuck. And its online play (judging from the matches I’ve played a couple weeks ago) is pretty terrible. Of course, I have no intention of playing a game no one else plays seriously, so I can’t give you any objective criticisms, but I’d have to be crazy to play it over Tekken 6.
Oh, I believe you on that. There’s a reason I called them “our best players”.
I haven’t followed MLG since they took Melee out a few years ago but back then all the tournaments were open.
I think the way they do it now is they have a “pro” tournament and a open tournament at each event. You can qualify for the pro one online if you want, but if you play well in the open tournament you get in too. I think you get in if you place at a previous circuit event as well. Nothing to flip your shit about person man
MLG was pretty much the best thing that ever happened to Melee, and I’d be glad if SF could get that kind of exposure and hype too. If nothing else it’ll bring in a lot more scrubs who pay for our prizes
Edit: Yeah dude, I just read that post. All the online tournaments do is boost your seeding. That’s perfectly reasonable for a national circuit that’s trying to get a lot of people involved. If you don’t wanna play online you can always qualify live.
Loooooook at myyyyyy daaaaaaughters! Theyyyyy arrrrrre sooooo prrrreeeeeettyyyy!
In other news, I’m playing the shit out of FF13. This is the first FF I played and liked. Goddamn, my game is just going to get worse and worse from all these RPGs.
