The Monster Hunter Thread

I did a search and I didn’t see anything other than references in the Wii thread so I decided to get one of these going. But if somehow I missed a thread that’s like this please delete and my Apologies.

I’ve been addicted to this Game ever since I first discovered it, I can’t remember who it was in my group of friends who got me into it, but ever since I’ve been spreading the word on this kick ass game myself. Getting friends to get it, and get a PSP JUST for the game. There’s so many versions of MH. Myself and most of my friends play Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and Monster Hunter 2G Both are on the PSP

Monster Hunter has a PlayStation version as well, but as far as I know, the PSP Versions are the most popular.

A bit of the story and such.

“Monster Hunter places the player in the role of an up-and-coming hunter who must accomplish various quests to achieve glory. Armors, weapons, and other items are created from the remains of slain monsters by carving off their horns, scales and bones. Monster Hunter plays in a similar fashion to Phantasy Star Online allowing the player to team up with up to three other hunters online to take down stronger monsters.”

The quests play a bit like this

"Monster Hunter is played through quests given to the hunter by the Village Elder or the Town Guild. Village Quests can be classified into four categories: hunting, gathering, capture and event. They are also categorized into different levels, ranging from 1 to 8. Higher level quests become available after quests in the previous level are completed. There are three types of quests:

* Hunting: Hunting quests make up the majority of the missions. As the name implies, the hunter will track, provoke, and eventually slay a monster or a number of monsters.
* Gathering: Gathering quests are missions in which the hunter must "gather" items like herbs or monster parts.
* Capture: The hunter must weaken, but not kill the prey, and then capture it with a trap. "

Weapons are quite varied and Unique.

So rather than typing for 20 minutes I found this useful little link here http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Weapon_Types

Armor is decided by which weapon type you choose.

Armor is always dependent on whether one chooses to use a Blademaster or Gunner weapon (excluding some few which can be worn either way). Blademaster armor usually focuses on stronger physical protection, while Gunner armor usually focuses on elemental protection. Certain armor combination’s provide the user with bonuses.

And then there’s the item combination System

Combining ingredients to make even better items is a very important feature in Monster Hunter’s gameplay, be it combining a blue mushroom and herb to make a health healing potion or a net and trap tool to make the infamous pitfall trap. Although many of the combination’s must be discovered by the player, some combination’s are hinted at throughout the game. Success is dependent on many factors, such as rarity of the items to be combined and amount of “combo books” a player has on hand or even certain armor skills. Some of the items in the game of the highest rarity can only be obtained by combining.

I figured We could use this thread to spread the word, Share news on up coming games and Maybe even organize a few mass Hunts together if that interests anyone.

I love Monster Hunter but only have Monster Hunter Freedom atm for PSP.

I still remember my first KutKu (The first dragon/wyrvern) AKA the chicken Kill.

Dude monster hunter is the shit. I was playing this shit in like 05 and I was soooo addicted to it. I have it for the PS2 and online play is fucking fun. I’m thinking about getting a Wii just for the latest version of this game. I really wanted part 2 for the PS2 but I believe it was only a japan release.

So I was on PSH (PlayStation Home) the other day and I went into the theater part and saw a video on Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I was wondering, does anyone know anything about this?

From the looks of it, it just looks like 2G in English. I haven’t been able to find much else out about it. As far as 2G goes, My friends and I already have and play it. We found someone who made an English patch for the game so we can know what the hell we’re doing.

Monster Hunter is one of the best games ive played in a long time i first got it on psp (freedom) but eventually i got 2ndG im sooo gonna get the wii version once i get a wii -.- also anyone play on Xkai? i can’t get that to work =( Unite is suppose to be 2nd g and if you got a modded psp not gonna tell you how but theres a english patch for 2ng called Papimeru jus google it

probably has to do with the 2G being released in near the end of June of this year. it’s going to be called Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

So Any SRK’ers in the Tampa Area want to get together sometime for a hunt?

THIS^

Is why I don’t like Monster Hunter. Call me when it finally goes online for real. Game needs to go to the 360 and PS3 already. Ya know, where people can talk to each other freely.

I’m a Monster Hunter Head as well. Game is freakin addicting when alot of your friends play it too. Although lately we haven’t played much, that’ll change when Unite comes out. PSP is getting too dusty.

Hopefully that’ll change with MH3 on the Wii.

well there is the ad-hoc party for the ps3 where you can use the ps3 as a tunnel for online stuff with your psp and MH, but atm i think it’s still in jap beta testing.

but the only downside to the online thing is if you decide to party up with random strangers they can fuck things up and waste your time. imagine 3 other guys with GS’s upswinging you into a charging Rathalos or perhaps a Plesy that’s ready to do it’s retarded hip check… just imagining organized grieving on MH makes my head hurt. but then again that’s why you play with friends

I’ve spent countless hours on the Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast back in the day. I haven’t played anymore Phantasy Star Online ever since they started charging a monthly fee to play that game.

For anyone who has played PSO, how does Monster Hunter compare? Is there a version coming out for the PS3? It would only be awesome if they don’t charge a monthly fee to play it.

Man I loved PSO! It was not necessarily the best game ever made, but it was pretty damn addictive!

I’ve done stuff like that with friends, just to piss them off. I’ll run behind them and do the unsheath attack with the hammer to send them flying into a Tigrex charge.

I’ve been playing MHF2 for over a year with some of my homies. I love this game. MH3 is the only reason I get a Wii.

i got to play monster hunter frontier (the pc version of the game) for a couple of months. it was a ton of fun and as far as mmorpgs go, monster hunter is definitely my favorite. imo it’s like PSO but better. it feels less grindy, and fights are a lot more exciting/intense because you’ll have to actually do stuff like evade and strategize and whatnot

really looking forward to MH3. hopefully we’ll get a stateside release!

<—long sword noob btw, i think they are cool

Long swords aren’t too hard to get used to, but like hammers remember one thing, you can’t block and your attacks aren’t THAT fast (though not nearly as slow as a great sword) so you have to know when you can attack, and plan to dodge and evade ahead of time.

I’ve completed MFH2 and it was a decent game. I guess i’m the few who’s not hook on it. Don’t feel it has much replay value. Imo, it will be a better game if it’s on PC and at a slight increase in game speed; but it might be too similar to Diablo or Oblivion?

edit:o wait there’s a pc version? checking it out…

Personally, I think an Online Adaptation would be great too, but also there comes a lot of problems with that. From lag, to Idiots doing stupid shit. Sure messing around every now and then is ok but sometimes you just want to get in there and kill that fucking thing. (Insert your most hated monster here)

I like the fact of grabbing my PSP and getting together with my friends, it keeps it a personal matter, plus you can talk strats with them and who will use what weapon and do what when you go hunting. I remember when Myself,MY friend Randall and, The Fireboy would get together and fucking play that game for HOURS on end. Stopping for food and to take a piss only. We were so hooked on that game. I still love it, and I haven’t even played it for a few months.

Online adventures with MH for PS2 were quite interesting sometimes. If you were able to ‘lock’, you most often would find yourself as part of a group that was hunting duals of los and ian, sometimes singles of either one on some occassions as well.

It’s nice when you are a part of a group that consists of friends and go do quests together, it sucks when someone randomly tries to join a quest that a ‘group’ is about to go on without asking and takes up a spot not meant for them, then you have to tell them to unjoin and stuff so your remaining member can join up. You could do password stuffs for quests initiation which was nice so you could have some control in having people join up for a quest.

When I was with a party, sometimes after defeating the monster and carving it for materials and such, I would crouch walk around and sometimes the other players would follow suit and we’d have like a line going, up until someone with a GS upswings us out of it, lol.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve been up slashed or hit by my friends using Hammers and Great Swords.

Alright so now an easy one, what is everyone’s favorite weapon?

I gotta give that to the Long Sword. (Katana)
