The Monster Hunter Thread: A Whole New World

It does tell you. It doesn’t spoon feed you though. If you go on your first capture mission it will explain it and there is stuff in the supply box.

Basic guide to capturing,

1 - get a trap tool from the provisions guy and combine with a thunderbug. Can also combine Ivy and Spiderweb for a net and then combine those with a trap tool.
2 - get sleep herb and parashroom and combine for tranq bomb.
3 - when the monster limps away to its nest and goes to sleep trap it and use two tranq bombs. If two doesn’t cap it, it’s not weak enough.
4 - another way to tell if it’s in cap range is there will be a skull next to it on the minimap.

As long as you’re not getting melted the armor value is irrelevant. You want high armor but what’s more important is the skills. If you’re doing fire damage, most of the time you want armor that ups that. If you’re guarding a lot you want guard. Diablos is greatsword armor from memory, I don’t believe it’s suited to gunners. Find armor that gives you ammo clip sizes and ups special ammo damage etc.

Ironically, Anja armor is one of those.

I have more success against Kirin solo then with a group. I can solo the thing just fine but with group everything goes to shit. I tried to help my friends with it and they all died within minutes. One time it killed all three of my squadmates with a single AoE.

Originally picked up an HBG as a secondary for group hunts, but now it seems I’m going all in on this, even on solo (where I was originally thinking of going dual blades or insect glaive like I did in the beta). Slicing ammo is just too good. Helps that it’s quite easy to keep farming slashberries in the Ancient Forest.

I just got carried by two HBG’s, so yeah I’m thinking it’s legit.

Groups don’t always make things easier. You don’t get extra continues and the monsters get stronger. I generally like to solo most things.

It’s pretty much the ultimate group weapon. Massive damage, utility, it’s always been really good. It’s hard to use solo. Not impossible but a lot of people prefer the light bowgun for the mobility or the bow for the tactical elements.

made it to the high lvl quests
now I can finally grind for the stronger gear

Solo HBG is doable but I’ve never liked it. It’s at it’s most satisfying when you’re using a power barrel in seige mode and just sitting in orange crosshair range. It’s crazy fun to just stand there with Wyvernheart and machine gun down stuff.

When you’re using it solo it almost becomes a gunlance. Shield, short-range gun, mounting attacks with the melee. Some people use all the evade gear with it and dodge, punish, rinse and repeat but again, that’s just another way of lancing.

Had a really frustrating loss to Diablos today. Had him to where he was just about to go down, when suddenly someone joins in and the difficulty goes up. Try to back off as I usually do when people join in, except Diablos when he’s almost dead doesn’t really give much space to back off, especially in his small lair. Next time, I’m just gonna cancel my flare’s when nobody’s joined near the start.

Gunlance doesn’t have slicing ammo, which is just really good now in this game. I use it for almost everything, and actually seems to be more effective than going for elemental weaknesses.

It’s main drawback (if you can call it that) is that it’s tricky to use in groups since it can cause people up close to flinch, stopping combos.

Who the fuck joins a quest after the 10 minute mark? You get no rewards and completion credit for doing that.

This is not a complaint, but you heal so much easier in this game. There’s been plenty of times where I’ve been a scratch away from getting KO’ed only to hit a vigorwasp and mega potion right after. There’s your entire health back in 3 seconds.

Just to clarify, monsters only get “stronger” in multiplayer by having their HP increase to 2.5 times the normal amount. They don’t have more defense or do more damage. Also, every weapon is legit, let’s not forget that.

To be fair the monsters hit harder to compensate for that.

Do they really? The last MH game I played was 4U(only like 40 hours though) and everything in HR would relentlessly wreck my shit. I’m not having nearly the same difficulty here and my current armor optimization is garbo.

Then again I didn’t like the way monster behavior and AI worked in that game. Pink Rathian would quadruple tail spin sometimes. That shit was ridiculous.

Also considering no one’s brought this up yet I think It’s time to talk about future dlc. They’ll probably be adding quality of life patches which is nice, but I’m certain that we’ll get a $$$ dlc down the line that’s got monster packs. If I’m told there will be a 25-30$ DLC with a new map and 3-4 new monsters, I’ll gladly shell out. I hope that’s more or less what it ends up being. It would be nice to get themed dlc too; as in packs of monsters from every game of the series.

Well maybe not as hard as 4U cause everything would wreck your shit in that.

Really I thing the average person should be fine until they hit Nerg.

At that point, is it a matter of skill or preparation?

I’m about to fight Diablos tonight. I killed Rathalos last night no problem, but I’ve heard Diablos is a bitch.

Black diablos is a literal bitch; regular diablos isn’t too bad. There’s really two main things to watch out for. One being that he charges forward A LOT so you never want to be in his face, always to the side. He’s really tall so you can safely roll at and under him if he hip checks you.

The other is when he digs. Any time you see him dig just put your weapon away, run away from him and leap as soon as you see his trail reach you. This is especially true if he’s enraged. You need to put that weapon away instantly and be ready to do the leap of faith. Oh, and screamer bombs stun him if he’s underground.

Wait until Diablos is completely underground before using a screamer. That’s how you stun him.
