That’s to compensate for the fact that you can’t just zone out to heal anymore. Heck, some monsters (e.g. Anjanath) will hunt you down if you try to heal at the wrong time.
First Monster Hunter game, picked it up yesterday. It’s so damn good. Anjanath is driving me nuts though. Anyone got any Longsword tips for hitting as hard as possible?
They’ve already hinted they’ll be adding new Monsters for free. It would be nice to see a new map. They could cut corners and do old maps in the new style. Maybe an expedition back to the old world to deal with some huge threat.
You know, I eased into the open map theme so naturally that I had almost completely forgotten about escaping to another zone to heal or sharpen.
I guess that does make a lot of sense; though I still feel like I live a lot longer and die a lot less here. Hey, whatever, I’m in love with this game.

[] The LS has an infinite combo that’s performed simply by hitting Triangle, Triangle, O, Triangle repeatedly. At any point, you can cancel into Fading Slash, Spirit Combo, or Spirit Thrust.
[] Use Fading Slash. You do Damage while evading. Try to use it as much as you can, but know when you have to actually Dodge.
[] Use the Spirit Combo as often as you can. Each level, attained by finishing the combo, gives you an attack boost. Spirit Combo attacks also have ESP, which is a property that allows attacks to ignore your sharpness and the monster’s armor. This means the attacks will never bounce.
[] You can extend the Spirit Combo by hitting Triangle between hits. Not only does this increase your Damage, it also fills the Spirit Gauge a bit. That helps you to get the full combo out earlier.

The LS is a really simple weapon that you get a whole lot of mileage out of. Once you learn the combos, it’s all about picking your battles. It’s relatively slow, so you can’t just go HAM like you can with an Insect Glaive. The idea is to get in, fill up your Spirit Gauge, Fading Slash out of danger, get back in, Spirit Combo, rinse/repeat.
Since you’re new to MH, a general tip that helps with the LS is to keep your weapon sharpened at all times. Like I mentioned, the LS has some pretty slow attacks so you can only imagine how much trouble you get into when that shit bounces. To add to that, you wanna know what parts of the monster your weapon is effective against. Believe it or not, different body parts have different weaknesses to damage types like cutting or impact, and they even react to elemental damage differently. Long story short, attack to exposed meaty parts, not the hard armored ones.
Speaking of which… What’s up with Lunastra getting excluded in every game while Teo makes it in? What they got against her?
This is by far the best MH game. It’s what the series always had the potential for. That’s not to say the earlier games aren’t worth playing… I’d recommend MHFU if you seemed interested. It’s just that, at this point, you might as well just hop on World. 4U is sick and has some of my favorite monsters that didn’t make it into World, but I feel like you’ll have an even better experience seeing MH in all its glory.
