I get caught by random shit that one-shots me. My current defense is like 171. Better armor only seems better when I drop down to help people with hr2 stuff.
People say āpatternā, but I donāt think it means what it meant in the 8 and 16- bit days. The only thing I see are ātellsā. If a monster crouches a certain way, it will do this attack, if it leans away from you for a second, it will use that attack. You canāt predict what attack is coming until you see the windup for itā¦at least, thatās been my experience.
if youāre getting one shot and you arenāt in G rank your defence is way too low.
Even then most of the stuff that can one shot you should feel like āwell yeah, I deserved thatā.
If you ever feel like āwell there was a slim chance it would do the one thing that kills me, and it didā, that indicates to me that your playstyle is way too risky.
Iāll gladly trade away potions worth of health to make riskier plays, but if something has even a 1% chance of one shotting me I wonāt touch it. Monsters have too much health and you have too few lives to try shit like that. You got 50 minutes though, just sit tight and wait for a better opening.

Raising my defenseā¦Iām hr4. Whatās a good minimum for this level? Iām at 228 nowā¦I feel that might be kinda low, as Iām not noticing a difference between now and when I was 171.
Just started using SnS, been using Horn, Bow & SAxe for the longest. Did not realize how good SnS was. All I really use now.

Charge Blade > SnS
Charge Blade = Insect Glaive > Everything
Both of them are unbalanced as all hell.
And itās amazing lol. Charge Blade is a bit harder to use, though. IG makes everything trivial. Damage buffs, defense buffs, speed buffs, and free mounts from anywhere? Yes, please.
Ran into my first Deviljho last nightā¦damn thing looks like a t-res shtupped a sea cucumber. Almost managed to take it out (had it drooling and standing in place), but in the end, it got me cuz the emerald Congalala I went on the quest to kill stunned me with his ground pound.
Edit: Got my defense up to 269, and FINALLY soloed Gore Magala. Everything I got hit with only did like 10-15% damage, whereas before, a stomp or explosion spread was an insta-cart. Thatās itā¦for a LONG time to come, Iām just grinding for armor. I see now that Iāve been a glass cannon.
You should be good for the rest of HR tbh.

Nnnnope. Still canāt beat Pinky solo. Always happens this way: once Iāll get poisoned and canāt take a cure fast enough, 2nd or third: I get poisoned and she runs into me while Iām taking the cure, 2nd or 3rd: I get dizzied from accidentally getting in the way of her charges, then she charges again to finish me. Need better armor.
Thats not a better armor problem.
Thats more of a pink rathian problem. Shes a fucking dick in this game. Her pattern is erratic and you need to be on a constant look out for when shes doing shit. If you really wany to make it easier then get armor with negate poison. Really only thing that will help you armor wise.
Or just go traps.
Traps, Bombs, more traps, and more bombs. Canāt afford to make the big boy bombs? Then just pretty much have your entire inventory just ingredients to make shock/pit fall traps. Cheap her out. Flash bombs work great too.
You might have something thereā¦I donāt use traps that often, and donāt like flash bombs cuzā¦hell, once I start attacking, I get caught by the random attack while Iām in mid-swing. Bombs are funā¦loootta stones in my inventory for remote detonation, too. I just gottqa do some more side stuff to get my cash back up. Iām only in the quad digits, money-wise. Thinking about this lvl32 Yian kut-ku Guild mission. Easy enough, and has a decent payout.
Wait till you get to the point where you gotta farm Gore Magala, but it dies before you can break its Feelers.
Thatās okā¦I accidentally break stuff on the head all the time. When I get there, Iāll let you know how it turns out.
And thatās exactly why I donāt wanna use em. Like knowing I beat the monster, not the OP ass weapon.
Have you fought the Crimson Fatalis yet? Fuck doing it without a Glaive.
