I spent a year researching (and training BJJ) with Japanese-Brazilians in Aichi Prefecture. In my experience, most of the folks I came across were nowhere near fluent in Japanese, and very few had the energy or time to work on improving it during their scarce free time.
Also, lots of people come planning to work a few years, save up some money, and then go back to Brazil, so they’re not really that motivated to assimilate. I can’t blame them–it’s hard to get comfortable speaking a foreign language and making friends with strange people if you’re there as a student, and I can’t imagine how hard it is if you’re working some shitty full+ time job at the same time.
