he trains at tristar right? but his gym is still ghetto.
I had a funny argument earlier today with a couple of friend and my girlfriend about MMA. They feel MMA is too brutal for high schoolers while being completely ok with football. I explained to them that MMA is significantly safer than Football and Boxing because of the fight stopping rules and several other things yet they scoffed.
Do you guys have any good web sources on these kind of claims made by people? Asking because you guys would provide quality over the quantity google plus good explanations if I got something wrong with my explanations as to MMA’s safety.
Football, dogfighting, and brain damage : The New Yorker
This doesnt really mean MMA is safer. This just means Football is hella dangerous. I think MMA is a lot more risky than most fans want to admitt.
i wouldnt really say either sport is safe. mma isnt an american pastime though…so your always going to have a different view on it
i feel like its more dangerous in general but we have far more safety precautions to prevent injuries compares to other sports. i mean its not so long ago they really didnt have helmets in hocky. only instituted in 1979, it doesnt take a genius to know getting hit in the face is bad.
Dude… so some guy like attacked me because of 3rd strike tonight… >_<
He was beligerent and like drunk (i think) and I asked if I could play against him and his friend was like “yeah thats cool”. We played and each round he lost he was cursing and kicking the machine.
So the match ended with me winning and he was like “WTF” all in my face and pushed me. I shoved him back and told him to chill and then he just straight up like bear hugs me and sloppily falls/takes me down. All my extremely minimal training from years ago kicked in and I pulled guard and had him in a guillotine. He was wearing some Affliction hoodie and I guess the thickness of it plus him trying to pull his neck/head out prevented it from being secure and he popped out. So now I’m on my back and he posted his right arm palm down on the ground on my left side. I wrapped his arm with my left and tried to control his upper body behind him to hopefully stop him from hitting me and i pivoted to the side and managed to get a kimura (or keylock? or same thing?) I cranked on it pretty hard and was yelling at him if he was done. (kinda blurry here). I then remember his friend separating it and yanking us apart and he mumbled “sorry man”. I took off as fast as I could since some mom was kinda yelling in the background (probably for a worker or security).
Thinking about it, I’m so lucky that his buddy was a nice, rational guy who didn’t start kicking me or something… I was kinda thinking “crap, this guys gonna start kicking me”… and ground fighting is frickin scary in RL situations with more than 1 person around >_<
Not trying to brag or anything (I’m horribly out of shape and was never good or anything but trained casually years ago) but just wanted to post about it i guess. I’m sure I could have done something to avoid the situation maybe but it all happened so fast and I was definitely not looking for a fight.
i am under the impression the exact rules of pankration are lost to antiquity
“Some consider it as the first all-encompassing fighting system in human history.[citation needed] It is also arguable that pankration competitions in antiquity were the closest an athletic event has come to outright, no-rules, empty hand combat.[citation needed]”
but its not like i’ve read that article yet. will do when its not so late.
Damn straight, last place you’d want to find yourself, consider yourself very lucky.
I’m 5ft7, if I got bear hugged like that, with some self control I would shove my thumbs in his eyes, yank the hair, punch the throat …then Johnny Cage punch to the groin :wonder:
You probably have to lube up and fellate the winner.
This is what not to do. Lol.
Thanks for all the responses. I guess we have to look at Tank Abbot, Ken Shamrock and Chuck Lidell to see what the sport does to people in the long run. From the early looks of it, it still looks better than football.
Chain that critical hit into a dragon punch FTW
This is really not what to do.
Buttttttttt if you managed a full splits into a cockpunch i’d be really impressed, even if i were the one who just ate my nutsack salad.
yeah going to the ground in a street fight in never a good idea. I’ve seen so many people get stomped out on the ground, it’s like as soon as a fight goes to the ground it’s the sign for the guys buddies to jump in and start kicking people in the face.
street fights number one move is anything to the balls. Some big guy man handled me once and at one point had me on my knees by the hair while he was standing over me…which he probably thought was good…until i uppercutted him in the balls and it was game over for him.
SRK, WE DA BESS!
Anyone else think that UFC 124 looks kinda…meh?
it looks a helluva lot better than 120 and 122 :0. I think Joe Silva is a terrible matchmaker
Yeah, I’ve always heard that being on the ground in a real fight is dangerous if there are more than 1 person there. But reflexes just kinda took over, he gave me his neck so i just tried to guillotine it. I suppose I could have tried to get out from bottom position but I’m more familiar with going for a sub as opposed to “shrimping/snaking” or whatever its called to create space and hopefully get out. Again… was really lucky that his buddy was a nice guy and knew what his friend was doing was wrong.
Makes me want to start exercising again and training for fun though… I definitely could use the physical activity >_<
I’m probably most excited for Miller/Oliveira after the main event, probably FOTN right there. Hazelett/Bocek is a real good one too (hopefully Hazelett has a better cut to 155 this time). Oh, and Alves/Howard should be dope too…well okay, nevermind, it’s a good card.
I think it’s both that MMA isn’t as safe as fans/Dana say it is, but football is also MUCH less safe than fans want to accept, even though they already know the truth. We do know that cuts and superficial damage are not as damaging long term as the kind of blows to the head football players/boxers take in large quantities, but to act like MMA fighters aren’t getting punched in the head would be naive.
In the end, I think most players in these sports know the risks going in. If they’re smart, they’ll save/invest their money properly to help themselves come retirement, especially in football where they’re making a substantial amount more than most MMA fighters.
On a related side note, despite knowing the kinds of long term damage that football players can take on, I’ve been talkin that HOT mess recently about the Giants having KO’d five quarterbacks already this season. On one hand, it’s insensitive of me to ignore the well being of these players while goin FUCK YEAH G-MEN KICK THEIR ASS from the safety of my couch. On the other hand, rules for player safety have improved dramatically. Defensive players used to get bonuses under the table for injuring opposing quarterbacks, now flags for illegal hits on QBs are a common occurence. And again, if you play football you best know that some 250 pound dude is comin for your ass. They’re making the choice to play this game.
Yeah, St Pierre/Koscheck, Miller Oliveira/ Hazlett/Boceck, and Alves/Howard all look nice. Don;t really recognize a lot of the other names though.
