SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has introduced hamburgers to his reclusive, communist country in a campaign to provide “quality” food to university students, media reported Wednesday.

The hamburgers were introduced in 2000 and dubbed “gogigyeopbbang,” Korean for “double bread with meat,” according to the June 29 edition of the North Korean state-run newspaper Minju Joson. The report was carried by South Korea’s Yonhap news agency on Wednesday.

Although reports from the isolated country have in recent years mentioned the introduction of the American fast food classic, the latest announcement seems to credit the country’s leader for their advent.

The news marks a curious development for North Korea, where U.S. consumerism is routinely reviled in the official media and people refer to the soft drink Coca Cola as the “cesspool water of American capitalism.”

Wednesday’s report cites leader Kim Jong Il as saying at the time of the hamburger’s introduction: “I’ve made up my mind to feed quality bread and french fries to university students, professors and researchers even if we are in (economic) hardship.”

The government then built a hamburger plant and Kim Jong Il ordered officials to pay close attention to modernizing mass production, the report was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

Hamburgers from the factory were first provided only to students at the elite Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang, but were later provided to other schools, the daily said.

Hamburgers are now familiar to many North Koreans, it added.

North Korea: Ferguson was a ‘disgrace’ and the United States is now...

The shooting of Michael Brown and subsequent standoff between protesters and police in Ferguson made headlines around the world, with allies treating it like a war-zone and despots using it to voice their considerable schadenfreude about America’s place in the world.

North Korea, however, had remained silent on the subject – until today.

In an article titled “DPRK Foreign Ministry Spokesman Terms U.S. Human Rights Abuser,” North Korea state news agency KCNA has taken the U.S. to task for the problems that led to Ferguson and the police response to it. Here’s how KCNA describes the case:

Some days ago, a black teenager was shot to death by a white policeman in Ferguson City, Missouri State, the U.S. and police ruthlessly cracked down on protesters, leveling their rifles at them and firing tear gas and smoke shells. Against this backdrop, there occurred a shuddering incident in another city in which a policeman shot another young black man to death.

The U.S. is, indeed, a country wantonly violating the human rights where people are subject to discrimination and humiliation due to their races and they are seized with such horror that they do not know when they are shot to death.

After the initial criticism of the Ferguson situation, KCNA pulls back to a make a broader point about the United States: You have your own human rights problems, so stop criticizing us. The U.S. has “suffered disgrace” from Ferguson, KCNA says, and become a “a laughing stock of the world.”

KCNA writes:

The U.S. had better honestly accept the unanimous accusations of the broad international community and mind its own business, instead of interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.

The USA leadership’s recent indiscretions are coming back to haunt them with the quickness. This, right after Israel cited the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan as justification for their brutish activities in Gaza. Not setting a very good example, and to other states, far less well-intentioned (HA! whatever those may be) than the USA, it could come to serve as an outright invitation to escalate tyranny. Especially in classically oppressive regimes just like North Korea.
