you mean like ammy, v joe and so on? not rly, i mean they dont give me anymore trouble because of their size, you dont have to worry about your normals whiffing because with thor you wont rly be using his standing normals much (or at all). The only real disadvantage ive noticed is thor’s j.H can sometimes whiff, not rly sure why it happens, maybe j.H’s hitbox never rly reaches the ground and after reaching a certain height thor goes into the recovery frames, so if theyre low enough to the ground it could whiff and give them a chance to punish. But thats more or less balanced out by thor’s tri dash j.L, if a character is short then its much easier to cross them up with j.L and its very hard to block.
I’m not sure if this is worth mentioning but as an anti air, I started using mp Strike. If I know where they’re going to land and Thor’s off screen then I’ll begin charging. Thor doesn’t say anything until he goes flyin out. In the corner at the end of bnb combo into otg Smash I began using the charged Strike too. It seemed like people would get hit because they’re normally waitin for me to jump and grab so they want to come out swingin so they get hit by fully charged Strike for their efforts. Just an opinion though…
Regarding Mighty Thunder: Sometimes I end a corner combo with a THC (Thor / Spencer / Dorm) and because of how fast Mighty Thunder goes out compared to either Lancer of Torch I can dash/fly in for a MH, X-factor > m MS > Mighty Tornado or just Mighty Speech if it’s earlier on in the match. Just wanted to throw that tid bit out there in case someone can find something more useful to do with it, but I like having the option and making it not so worthless.
That’s a pretty interesting lil’ tidbit to know. Sounds pretty cool. I might test out some team hypers some time now. You get Mighty Thunder from the Spark assist right?
Another funny tidbit would be making use of the shittiness of mighty thunder by doing an xfc (if they blocked it up close) and MH them. Everyone knows it’s bad but only thor players know HOW bad it is on recovery, you may use that to your advantage. I personally rarely miss with it but it is a good gimmick tool.
I never really got to introduce myself to other Thor players! Here’s a photo of me hung over in pools at EVO. I made it to finals in my pool, but ended up losing double jeopardy. They were going to put me on stream but didn’t because of time constraints. I was reppin Thor on point and screamin MIGHTY RESETS at all my opponents when I mindfucked them. You bet it was with this mask on.
Anyway, I’m very eager to try out the new Thor in umvc3. From what I hear, he isn’t too much different… but I’m hoping that with all the nerfs and his slight buffs, he’ll be much more viable. I will definitely have a team with him, but we’ll see how the metagame shapes out to see if I’ll main him again.
RoyalFlush! We played a month or so back and Mike’s in Santa Monica! I hope we can play again soon. I live in west LA, and I’m always looking for people to play with!
Good stuff my dude. Wish they did show you on stream. That woulda been cool. Anyway, welcome to the party, there’s drinks an’ snacks all about. Chillax with the Asgardians, and come Ultimate time, we’ll be sure to rep the mightiest.
Got a good one for you. My constant issue with my Thor game is trying to get my opponent to stop pushing buttons. Let’s take an example of Thor vs Wesker.
Wesker can maintain his momentum really easily. Gun teleport gun teleport and a relatively easy pickup into a combo forces Thor to block pretty much all the time. I tend to fish for hits with a super jumping C and mixing up my trajectory with an air-dash, anything low air seems to lose to the fast startup of wesker gun. Also when I actually get to throw things at them the first thing that I touch them with is generally push-blocked and they’re free to restart their offense with gun and it seems quite hard to keep momentum flowing in my favour to actually hit them enough to stop them pressing buttons so I can actually mix them up with a command throw.
Input/thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks guys!
More Mighty Strikes. More super jumps. Stay mobile. Use assists, and when you touch him, go for the kill. The key to fighting Wesker is to be as mobile as you can while also being as defensive as you can. People know that Thor suffers against zoning, so they’re going to do their best to keep him out. It’s your job to make their job as difficult as can be. Mighty Strikes push you forward, so use that to fish for hits more than the jumping :h:. Maybe jumping :h: after a super jump just to get you down, and then cancel into a Mighty Strike at the last second. When you do land a hit, and they end up blocking it, call an assist to lock them down, and then get right back in there with a :h: Mighty Smash. Practice this in training mode. Set the CPU to all guard, and push block to random, and practice getting back in with those. A nice little thing to do is something like crouching :l:, crouching + Lockdown Assist (like Ammy’s Cold Star, Dorm’s Dark Hole or Purification, etc), :h: Mighty Smash, and if you go over their head, wait for the assist to end and do Mighty Hurricane right at that moment. If you don’t go over their head, then do a Mighty Hurricane anyway. Now when you do manage to land a hit that isn’t blocked, go for the kill right there. Thor has two real ways to kill on contact, and that’s either through an X-Factor BnB combo, or a BnB combo into a reset and another BnB. Choose whichever best suits you at the time, and go for it right there. Thor has a hard time landing hits, so when you do, make it hurt hard, and Wesker is the type of character you want gone real fast.
Just going to throw this in.
We all know Rapid Slash is not safe on block, Vergil players will often activate devil trigger, burning one bar of meter to make it safe.
Mighty Punish that shit.
stares at you intently recalls instances of rapid slash being stupid thinks for a bit shakes your hand
Thank you.
I got a LOT of Wesker/Vergil/Dante experience after spending maybe 2 hours straight against that very team. He was pretty BnB with his Vergil, and when he had my Thor in the corner, he would finish his block string with a stinger to keep me at range, following that with a very late Rapid Slash looking to bait out a counter. Even when I blocked it, it was devil trigger pressure, block string>assist>teleport. Left rights do work against a noob like me.
Well, we all know how amazing Thor is as an anchor, I threw a hail mary when I saw him activate. Why not right? Touchdown. It’s Mahvel.
I don’t have the frame data on MH, or on any of Vergil’s Devil Trigger normals for that matter - but if we could save the meter and punish with a MH, simple air combo followed by an otg super. That could make for a dead Vergil. Problem solved. Problem staying solved.
Thor isnt a very good anchor, he does have some good uses for XF but thats only part of what makes a good anchor.
Excuse the interwebs sarcasm - it never seems to translate to text.
As much as I love Thor, if he’s the last character standing I’ve clearly done something incredulously wrong.
lol ya thats true, my bad.
Alright. So I watched about an hour’s worth of J. Wong/Yipes/Combofiend etc. etc. In that one hour I saw a few things that I was hoping I could emulate with Thor. I’m not at all the founder of this tech, but it is new, and I wanted to see how well it would apply with Thor. Before I go into how much more excited I am about this character, let’s get into this.
I’m starting off with the Vajra assist that seems to be troubling everyone. It’s a homing dive kick that WILL hit. There is no avoiding it. Now, given the fact that Thor, the God of Thunder, is not to be fucked with - we have no inclination of avoiding any fight. PUNISH THAT SHIT!

First, we see where our issue with this assist lies. It functions as an amazing anti-air, homing on the player character, delivering the attack, and then “Farewell.” Standing, the attack opens up our character, however when caught in the air, where we’re at our best - Strider’s assist causes a slight ground bounce.
:l: & versions of Mighty Spark serve well to punish the assist as Strider leaves the ground, and just before Strider’s assist connects.
In the above video, a slightly miscalculated Mighty Spark had me opened up. However, timed correctly, the initial hitbox of Mighty Spark leaves Strider close enough, and with enough Hit Stun - to punish with Mighty Tornado. I do not know whether or not Mighty Tornado grants projectile invulnerability, but for many Strider’s Vajra assist presents enough of a problem to warrant a risk like that. With 654,100 damage dealt in a single, well timed punish - problem solved. Problem staying solved.
And this new tech right here. This new tech has me so much more excited for Thor. Nothing is more irritating than Wesker just spamming Air :s: to desperately avoid being reset. Why? Because 9/10 it works - against me. Well, not for long. Thor now has another option in his reset game.
All credit given to Justin Wong of course, from whom I sought to emulate this particular tech. Justin’s Nova was caught in Wesker’s reset - rather than being air grabbed, Justin blocked the command input - guard cancelled with X-Factor, and air grabbed Wesker. That’s when I asked myself, “if an air grab works, what about a command grab?” Please enjoy.

Now I can’t go into all of the incredibly creative mix ups that can be produced with this Thor tech, I’m just not that experienced.
However, I do know, if thou doth wish to challenge the Odinson, thou will face the divine power of MIGHTY MJOLNIR! NEVER SHALL THE GOD OF THUNDER RELENT!
I like dat. I like dat a lot. Good stuff my dude.
So after spending some time on the YouTubes, and some time in the lab - I’ve been successfully landing Air Mighty Hurricane with zero execution error.
I open them up with whatever > :s::h: and :l: Mighty Strike. Most people have a tendency to avoid the corner, so I just air dash in anticipation of their tech roll forward. Air Mighty Hurricane. Dead character.
The only issue with this reset is that I’m making a gamble. 50/50 on whether they tech roll front or back. I’m still working on the Mighty Tornado > Super Jump > Air MH reset. I landed it on the SRKLive stream and people were pretty hyped about it. “Seeing new Thor tech is always awesome!”
It sucks Thor’s threads are so dead.
lol I rhymed
He’s such an amazing character, heck I made an epic comeback with him online like 4 times.:3
You can also use M mighty strike to set up the reset but instead of air dashing you wait till you land then super jump in their direction, i feel like it gives me a little more time to react to their air tech. Its obviously not as good as using the M mighty strike > fly > dash reset but its a good alternative if you’re having a hard time getting the timing down for that or playing online. But I havent tried this in umvc3 yet so not sure if there has been any changes to it.
