The Mighty Punish Tavern: Tell us of your battles over some of Odins Beer

I used to use that reset but people can pretty much get away from it unless they are in the corner. I find :s:>:m:>:m:>:m: Mighty Spark then Air Dash in the correct direction and :h: Mighty Hurricane is just about guaranteed to land even mid screen. The additional stun is really obvious when using mighty spark :m: or :h:. Also mid screen most people tend to try to tech away from Thor so I generally just Air dash straight ahead or up forward. In the Corner My favorite resets are :m:>:m:>:h:> :m: Mighty Strike then air dash straight up before Thor hits the ground and while you are still off screen then Mighty Hurricane :h:. As for your Mighty Tornado reset are you talking on the ground or in the air? because in the air all you have to do is air dash up and grab them.

I didn’t get a chance to pick up the new marvel, how is the God Of Thunder ?

Ugh I got tossed around online recently. I just am not good at dealing with really good zoning against Thor. I feel like I pick the wrong option alot and don’t choose my rush down moments well.

I need to get better at predicting my opponents movement rather the auto piloting it. Choosing the correct places to put my hitboxes. Also need to read up back much better : (

Wish I could play more both on and offline offline preferred.

Offline is always preferred.

Strong zoning is a huge challenge for Thor no matter how you look at it. Assists and the like are supposed to help, but the match up is still not entirely in Thor’s favor. It really boils down to experience. I’m sure you know the general “supposed to do” things by now: well placed Sparks, super jumping, flying, assist backed strikes, etc. The only thing left is, as you pretty much alluded to, playing more.

Wanna give a quick run down of the play by play of your last match? Who you were fighting, what they were doing?

The main situation that was giving me issues was the guys strong wesker, who had the wesker zoning game down really well. Then with the fact that he was backed by Jam session and it just got really annoying. I think alot of it was really my fault for just playing stupid (I got caught with some lols stuff) but I was also chasing him around the screen when I really should have just beamed more. Invariably then what would happen is I’d get caught with a random hit (usually run into jam session which he converted off of) and then die in the mixup. There were def times I just dropped the win but it is what it is.

For me I think the problems I currently have are

strong zoning from characters like wesker (can teleport, has a good projectile)
Dante - Im still really bad against hammer, Ive taken to just trying to spark him, if he’s jumping around and mashing hammer. I need to see what spacing I can try a jump back and hurricane at and still get it, if they are random d+s and hammering. This match is just always really boring to me because hammer stops alot of thors ground game and I just end up getting bored with zoning. Lol. My fault completely. I should try double chicken blocking the s+ the hammer, maybe i can sneak in a grab.

Don’t forget you have a command grab. And remember that Wesker can run from you but you can run from him too…

Command grab’s not gonna do much against someone who’s running a way. The rational behind zoning is to pin you in a certain spot in an attempt to limit your options. From what you described, that’s kinda what happened. Your options were limited, but you tried to go about like they weren’t and got bopped for it. It happens. Part of the reason it’s effective is because it’s frustrating. A frustrated player is more likely to make mistakes.

When situations like that arise, the first thing that should happen is you being able to quickly recognize it and adjust to it. If Wesker is teleporting away and using Jam Session as a shield, don’t run into it. See it come out, then nullify it with a Strike. A TK :l: Strike if you want to move forward, or an in air :m: Strike if you just want to get on the ground and safely block the gun shot that he wants to throw out.

Now Wesker’s still running away, and there’ll be a bunch of times when you just don’t have enough time to start up a Strike. That’s fine, you still don’t have to be aggressive in that situation. Just block the little chip from the Jam Session and let Wesker keep teleporting. If he decides to try and get tricky and teleport to try and cross you up, it’s okay, because you’re still in block stun so it won’t do anything. So long as Wesker’s running, he’s really not much of a threat.

In spite of your options being limited, you still have a projectile to throw back once in a while. Spark is pretty fast, so if you throw out some well placed ones, you’ll hit him before or after he teleports away, which’ll put him on edge. From there it’s just a matter of who decides to go in first after some full screen back and forth. If you see an opening, you should definitely take it. Say he backs himself into a corner and calls Jam Session. If you can see and recognize it and be in the right position, that’s a Strike into combo if need be. If that doesn’t happen, let him keep playing how he wants until he gets frustrated enough and comes to you.

It basically boils down to staying cool.

When it comes to Dante, the same principle applies. Stay cool. Any time Dante is above you, don’t press a button. Just don’t. Don’t even go for a Hurricane, because you know what’s coming next. Block the mess out of it. Chicken block if you can, too. Then you’re free to perform an action. An XFC Hurricane or a TK Hurricane or a regular grab. If you’re trying to get in against him, empty tri-dashes in order to stay safe. If you’re trying to stay away, :l: Sparks. A fight against Dante is about spacing and blocking. He’ll be pressing most of the buttons. You should not.

And of course, the real key to these matches, aside from all those other things, is the proper assists. Anything that you can call to put something on the screen is a big help.

I was talking about command grabbing Dante, that’s how I deal with the many that I fight.

Animated GG’s tonight, I recognized your name immediately. I think of the teams you played the Taskmaster team is ideal and more TOD worthy. I realize you have Doom in the back, but Task up arrows is a sweet assist for the Odinson. Thor can actually play fairly well against missiles so work on assist calls. I just started Raccoon at the beginning of the summer…I’m mostly still spamming pendulum, fishing for a hit, but I hope to get my assist calls better and coon gameplay up. No offence but my Skrull never got started :stuck_out_tongue:

I played against Drew Grimey online this afternoon. Randomly ran into him in a player match. I lost 4-10 in a unofficial FT10. Dropped combo lost me a game otherwise i couldve kept the set going.I ran Thor/Doom&Strange/Ammy against his Dante/Vergil/Strider and Zero/Dante/Strider.

Honestly I was giving him too much top player respect when it came to Vergil and his Dante was kind of ass TBH even online by that I mean he was just going nuts with box jump h and teleports annoying but easy to exploit. I would’ve done better if he had chosen Viper since the match up is better for Thor. After a couple resets and good reads. He respected Thor on point and gave me some space at the beginning at the match.

When Vergil came in 100% of time he’d Helmbreaker like a true Vergil player and 75% of the it’d hit (that top player respect) Any time he’d pressure me with Spiral Swords. I’d XFC Mighty Punish DHC offing Vergil any chance I’d get. If my incoming mixup timing and spacing was a little more calculated I would’ve had a better outcome.

When Strider came got to see battle if he didn’t get nuked by THC or punished by other means it was against Ammy. It showed me my Ammy needs work…still and that I’m possibly a little tooo patient
but his timing with Strider assist is air tight and has little to no gaps. So most of the time Dante and Vergril were in my face all time lol

Match 14 is when I swapped Doom for Strange and he changed team to Zero/Dante/Strider (wasn’t expecting that) this is when I stupidly drop F+H super to kill Strider making it 4-10 his way. Either way I had fun and learned a lot. He’s a strong Vergil player but can be a little reckless when it comes to Strider assist but I assume a lot of Strider anchors players are like that.

ummm, I hate to do this, but I probably played Dante for about 3 days and quit, cause I didn’t like him… So my dante should be bad and you should not lose to him… Also, I pretty much give no respect to anyone online since I’m just fucking around online for fun. The only time I give respect online is if someone forces me (like by winning and punishing me reckless helm breakers, etc…), therefore forcing me to pick viper, which would have been worse for you since I actually know how to play the character.

Just felt like clearing up some things, not trying to be a “top player dick” since I’m not a top player, just someone who has fun playing the game. Good luck and keep practicing

Thor vs Viper is a better match for Thor than vs random Dante. So I think I would’ve been better off against your actual team to be honest with you.

Thanks for clearing some things up and providing some insight to your online gameplay. If I’m ever in NorCal I’m coming for your head
