The Master Cook Book: Combos, Match-ups, and FAQs (Updated: Ultra SF4)

Have you seen the way dawgtanian does it. I think his way is easiest

Easiest doesn’t always mean most consistent. And I have. Tried it and it started messing up my other run cancels and cr.mk loop. Not worth it.

The conventional way is “Jab run, Jab, Fierce”.

How do you double post asking a question, and then refute your first answer?

If it was so easy, why are you here asking for help?

Im trying to relearn the RSF as I stated earlier I was Negative edging the Run with the fierce button which would sometimes get me ex run. I just wanted to know if there where other methods to doing it. Im sorry if i offended you.

btw thanks pilgrim_pud

If it works for YOU. then by all means, go for it. That’s what matters. However, I cant honestly reccomend it I just use Jab and Fierce. Although I find it odd that negative edge-ing fierce would result in an EX Run.

I’m having trouble with the cammy match up. I don’t know where to start, but there are a lot of problems I’m having approaching her like spacing and her troublesome dive kicks. How do you guys go about with this match and is it possible to punish her dive kicks?

Dive Kick chart. Learn which ones can be punished.

Apart from that, she has a difficult time dealing with far roundhouse and EX Running of her mixup game. Don’t crouch tech because that’s what she wants you to do. Stand/reaction tech and eat a 120-150(what ever it is) damage throw instead of a counterhit combo. Her DP will go over you if you back step it, so punish correctly. You can U1 most of her dive kicks. Gets fucked over by cross-up ones though.

EDIT: The frames say you can punish a blocked Spiral Arrow with Fierce, but the hit boxes don’t overlap. U2, throw or cr.MK loop for a punish.

Guys any general tips for run stop fierce loop? Getting a lil desperate here.
I’ve had a stick for a month and I (of course) haven’t trained that much yet, but when I’m trying to practice the loop I try to input is like this:
FP -> QCF LP-> LP->FP->QCF->LP->LP… etc
Is this the right way (initiate run with light and cancel with LP also and then to HP) or is there an easier/more common way?
Also any general tip for practicing RSF? I’m getting the Quesadilla bomber(?) (run into HP version) accidentally alot, any ways to prevent it?

Thanks for any input! Trying to learn fuerte

Yes this is the correct input for a four rep RSF finished with slide:

:hp: xx :qcf: + :lp:, :lp: ~ :hp: xx :qcf: + :lp:, :lp: ~ :hp: xx :qcf: + :lp:, :lp: ~ :hp: xx :qcf: + :lp:, :hk:

And yes, this is the most common way to input RSF.

Tips:

  • Don’t try to combo at first. Just work on canceling Fierce into run, stopping and then Fiercing and running again.
  • Get your muscle memory built.
  • Once you build some muscle memory then speedup your stop to fierce and your run to stop. You have to run deeper than you think.
  • Remember RSF is actually kinda slow. Just find the rhythm.
  • Check the RSF thread for more help.

Thanks alot mate for the fast answer, especially the last bolded one helps, since I’ve always thought it was faster. Cheers

i still have my video uploaded that i made way back in the day to demonstrate the rhythm, maybe it helps:

Hi guys, I’m trying to make a statistic regarding combos (all characters) and I need a little help. I need 2 combos per character:

  • Best BnB combo
  • Best punish combo
It doesn’t matter how many bars uses, but it must work midscreen, on at least half the cast, at least standing, and it should be practical. No jump in/counterhit/Ultra/Super.
Also, if the same combo is used as bnb and for punish, then I list only 1. Thank you

What are everyone’s views on the Hakan match up?

I used to think it was pretty even or slightly in Fuerte’s favor but now it seems to be more like a 3-7 match up. I played a tournament last night and got blown up by the uncrouchable oil dive setups, apparently there’s like 5 or so that work like a charm. Other than committing these to memory it’s really hard to see them coming and there’s really no good way to get out of them other than EX legs. Even then all the Hakan player would have to do is stand and wait for you to deliver yourself for a free SPD and grab a little extra lube for his troubles. Anyway, I’m gonna play with some of this stuff in training mode to see if there’s a good/better way to deal with the setups and maybe get a punish out of it in certain situations.

Well, I don’t have much experience against Hakan but here are my thoughts:

  • I would go for a 4-6 matchup as Hakan has no real wake up options.

  • I also tend to abuse the dropkick. Hakan players like to focus attack and it goes over its slides.

  • Hakan rising animation after a knockdown is slower (or at least different) than the rest of the cast: those safe jump setups won’t always work.

  • By picking U2, Hakan will try to train you to cr.HK so he can piledrive you. Keep that in mind in your metagame.

  • RSF feels different on Hakan but it surprisingly hits from really far way.

  • I think his stun is horrible. RSF x 4 + Slide and another simple mixup can easily lead to a stun.

That’s about it…

Alright, did some lab work and found some good stuff regarding Hakan’s uncrouchable oil dives.

All reversal specials get grabbed except for EX guac which escapes the situation.
Reversal lk and mk supers beat out the oil dive but don’t hit fully.
Reversal hk super gets grabbed.
Reversal ultras escape situation.

Here’s the good news, any crouching normal performed on the reversal frame will beat it or cause it to whiff completely.

Crouching lp, mp and hp hit and cause air reset.
Crouching hk goes under and puts you at full screen, no punish opportunity outside of the corner.
Crouching lk and mk causes it to whiff and land in front of you for a punish opportunity.

So, the best option here is to plink punches or kicks on wake up. If you plink punches you can follow up any reset with a far hk in case the Hakan scrambles with sn SPD or just run away. If you plink crouching mk and lk your best punish options are as follows: ultra 1 or 2, rsf, hk xx guac or even level 2 focus. Note that if you try raw rsf to punish Hakan’s hitbox is pretty far back so you may have trouble landing more than 2 or 3 reps. I recommend the last two options if you don’t have an ultra stocked, hk xx guac gives you a good wake up situation and FA2 gives you the opportunity to get more reps and damage from rsf.

This was all tested against the (oiled) f+hk > back dash > hk oil dive setup which I confirmed as uncrouchable on wake up.

Anyways, this isn’t a real game changer unless you sniff out the oil dive setups but hopefully it will help out if, like me, you keep getting blown up by it.

iViva!

I could use some real advice on how to do RSF. I’ve been practicing in the lab for hours now and still can’t even get the 2nd rep (3rd fierce). By that time, the opponent is either too far and I end up getting far st.hp, I do it too quickly and get fajita buster, or I wait too long to run-stop and then fierce which ends up getting blocked.

The RSF loop seems to be a lot more complicated than simply going through the motions. There is a strict timing on the run-stop portion itself that almost seems like a 1f link.

Im no expert on RSF but i can usually do 4 reps on pad. What helped me out the most is letting fuerte get the second hit in as deep as possible. From my experience at least , how deep you get the 2nd hit determines how long you can get the combo going.

Word of advice: don’t practice the RSF on Ryu in training mode. He’s the hardest one to get a decent loop going against. IIRC, Sakura or Chun Li are easier (at least they were in the versions before Ultra)
