The Martial Arts Movie Thread 2017 Donnie hates his fans

I really don’t understand why the flyin fuck in E3 they make cameo appearances and then replace everyone with a younger cast?
that’s so stupid.
people paid money to see their 1980s action hero in Expendables.

like no one gives a fuck about seeing a new younger unknown cast.
jeez wtf was Stallone thinking?

Is that martial arts movie with Rza in it any good?

its subpar but i enjoyed it still

Seeing as how Hulu has the Zatoichi films (1-25) I’ve been trying to watch at least one a day. I am currently on the third one and so far I really enjoy them. Check me out if you all get the chance.

I didnt know that. Epic. Which is your favorite zatoichi film?

Also not feeling the protector 2s fight scenes at all. The combinations are so slow. I dont get why the editor wouldnt speed them up a little OR why the heck they moved so slow in the first place?? You can tell the talent was there but the director didnt have the heart to say do it again

Well Jaas’ fight scenes aren’t incredibly fast to begin with. I mean he is good but it felt like more of the same.

Watch ong bak and protector. Those were much faster than in p2

I’ve seen both. Those two films were what started a new wave of martial arts. But TYG2 wasn’t nearly as good as those two.

I never found the fighting of Tony Jaa spectacular like Hong kong films…I do enjoy his pure talent & his “showcasing” ability in every film. I would really like to see him choreograph by the best fight choreographer alive today Sammo.

I think what jaa brought to the table was something different, buy I feel he us already being surpassed by the likes of yayan, uwais and crump. Not saying he is shit, just saying there are newer guys coming and doing what he started but on a wider scale.

Is anyone else seeing new “fad choreography” or moves that one movie made cool, yet gets copied recently… and just doesn’t look good at all.

There are some choreography combos that will always look good. But lately I’m seeing some moves being put into indie martial arts fights or even in movies, that just don’t look cool/badass/aesthetically pleasing. Here are some, lemme know if you have any personal pet peeve choreography moves:

1.) Catch the leg while they kick, and while holding, roll to the ground - It’s more a leg catch gator roll. But this was famously done in Undisputed 3. And I liked it there only because it was a somewhat creative transition to other parts of their choreo. But when I see indie fight scenes do it, or other MA movies, I just roll my eyes. Sure others have done it before Undisputed, but it just doesn’t look as cool as it’s supposed to. No matter how fast or slow, it’s just meh.

2.) Enemy goes for a front kick, You grab the leg and roll towards them. ending up laying on them perpendicular, and hitting them with an elbow. I think this one does look pretty cool. It’s like you sidestep them, grab the leg, lift the leg so they fall backwards, then you roll while holding the leg, and elbow them. It does look alright, but it’s just everyone I meet that does choreography adds that in there. It’s like they couldn’t think of their own ground game choreo, so they did this.

3.) You got knocked down, lying on your back, your enemy rushes towards you, do a front kick at their face, they stumble back, get out of jail free card: It’s just over done and rarely does it look believable or powerful to warrant the “get back up to your feet for free right after” card.

4.) Scott Adkins Kick/ Guyver Kick: Unless you’re going to add a variation, STOP doing this kick. I’ve seen it a million times, yes Scotty Adkins does it way better than you, and yes even casuals have seen that kick before.

Speaking of those combinations, I just saw a movie that was guilty of the 1st one.^ That same movie was choreographed by the guy responsible for this possible bite:

^Wow that’s a blatant ripoff, I didn’t know you could get away with literally stealing choreography frame for frame.

First time I’ve watched that Sleeping Dogs short film, brilliant work :claps:

This chick should be in a movie:

Yeah the guy who helped choreographed that I think was Timpas who also worked with Brahim. They were known to be impressive martial arts tricksters like 7 years ago. Anyway, Im guessing their tricks gets them the choreography jobs and that they arent real choreographers trying to push the boundaries, let alone try to be on par with an “indie” choreographer.

When I saw that, if it was really an intentional rip off = just no shame, soulless.

And performer =/= choreographer

I like this kind of Karate better:

When it comes to Karate we can’t forget about Sonny Chiba. I felt dude was underrated but he had some skills considering the era.

Do you guys think it would be a good idea to show my 8 year old nephew the Raid and the Raid 2. He’s learning martial arts and I think he’d be really into it. Im scared he might try this crazy shit on his friends and kill them tho but I watched violent ass movies when I was a kid and I turned out fine.

I say start slow. Introduce him to the essentials first. If you would like a list I can post it up.

nah thats a bit too hardcore for an 8 yr old just starting martial arts.

I showed him Raid Redemption and during the fight scenes he was laughing hysterically so I thought he was enjoying it. At the end I asked him if he thought it was cool and he said the story sucked and it was just a bunch of dumb fighting, which pissed me off. So much for attempting to bond with this little asshole. I fucking hate kids.
