The Martial Arts Movie Thread 2017 Donnie hates his fans

as expected the reviews for special ID are in and its getting ripped to shreds by the critics… I bet Vincent Zhao’s happy he wasn’t in this film.

I watched it. I still can’t seem to get through it though. The fight scene between Ken Lo and Yen could have been better, especially since Lo is an amazing kicker. I find myself not paying attention during the boring parts. Eh it seems like The Raid 2 will be the one to watch for.

Donnie needs to tone down the grappling and focus on the style that made him who he is. people dont want to see a fight scene with 2 guys rolling on the floor for the majority of the scene… if you watched the screener you can see people leaving the cinema during the fight between donnie and andy on, lol… I’m hearing its one of the worst films he’s ever made.

people also dont want to see another wushu/sanda fight. what made him is the grappling infused with wushu. he wasnt noticed for most people til he did that. he was noticed for woo ping and other stunt choreo guys before spl and such.

what type of fight do you want to see?

in a modern setting wushu isn’t really a suitable style for a fight scene. Wu Jing and Jet are Wushu (granted that Jet can switch up his style for modern films) but donnie’s style really isn’ t. Sanda incorporates grappling without the ground game which I believe suits him best. I have no issue with BJJ or wrestling in action films, in fact I like it but don’t spend too much time on the ground, or at least throw some strikes when you’re down there to make it a little more entertaining.

The first clip we saw with Donnie and Andy On looked great, before we saw the whole fight. what spoilt it was the unnecessary use of wires, the really slow BJJ transitions and the lack of strikes.

the type of fight i want to see clearly isnt what everyone else wants to see. for the most part the martial arts movie community seems against mma/grappling as a whole…and i get that. til donnie yen really played with it, for the most part it looked clumsy and was limited to a rear naked choke and the occasional flying armbar.

ive had alot of ideas i wanted to play with but havent had the time or place to try it out with stunt people. In my head a fusion of prowrestling and mma stuff seems like it would be a dope idea. Taking things like a triangle to powerbomb(rampage vs arona concept) but then the person about to be powerbombed let’s his legs go into a clinch (muaythai).

or a japanese armdrag into an armbar.

i dunno its kinda broken up as an idea at the moment cause i havent gotten to play with it yet.

Nah what made Donnie Yen was that all the greats went to the west or retired…The left overs were teeny boppers with nice hair. Donnie Yen was mid tier sometimes worse then that during the late 90s. His best stuff was with yuen woo-ping in the Tiger Cage series & his directorial debut Legend of the Wolf.

As for the prowrestling the end fight in Tiger Cage2.

I feel you on that. I am working on a concept now for our local film festival, where there will be some interesting fight scenes. I think the style of the protagonist will be more so along the lines of Armor King from Tekken, then incorporate some other styles. I was going to make it more comedic, but then i decided to try my hand at film noir and give it a serious tone.

My ideal fight scene would consist of 25% boxing, 50% kickboxing (with just a bit of Muay Thai thrown in), 15% judo (grip fighting, throw attempts and sprawling) and 10% anything that adds originality to the scene (but isn’t compulsory for every scene)… such as quick BJJ submission attempts, ground and pound, over the top wwe style wrestling and unique body type match ups… etc.

lol, speaking of sammo hung, he done fucked up.

it was a year ago but this is the first time i’m hearing about it.

It’s false, he had already come out to personally make it clear that it was not an affair, and that he understands that the these people need to make a living but please think of the parties involved and the consequences that it may cause for them. “We’re cultured people, please write with conscience” was his message to the media. The video’s here, there’s no English translation but I’m just posting for the sake of providing my source. P.S. The guy holding a mic sitting beside Sammo Hung is his son.

For those who dont know, Sammo’s wife Joyce Godenz is in the movie Eastern Condors. She’s the one who got her hand cut off. There is also a movie called She Shoots Straight, one of the better female action films which she stars…There is this really awesome move at the end which this muscle woman does a helicopter spinning Joyce around then throwing her in the air then doing a spinning kick in one motion. Probably one of the coolest moves i’ve seen on film.

I doubt Sammo would cheat on this beauty.

Joyce still looks good today. i remember hearing there was a bit of a controversy when sammo married Joyce because she’s half white.

Here’s a video of Don"The Dragon" Wilson dissing Van Damme.

ok short story for you guys from today:

So the stunt group i’m apart of in new england, one of the members posted up a little student no budget project. Figured it would be a good little thing to work on. Mainly to just get some film of myself for a demo reel, so i get down there at the college and am watching who i guess were two of the choreographers working with the film’s star.

Now originally i read it was gonna be a ninjitsu guy from philly who was gonna be the main choreo guy. But apparently he didnt come down to mass. So i’m watching these guys work the choreo…and it’s just weird stuff…stomping their feet and slapping their chests to give the impressions of hitting…now why might you ask why this is weird.

  1. it comes off too prowrestling-ish…apparently they are stage combat guys…explains that

  2. its a film…the sound effects would be added in post production…there is no need to add your own effects in.

Now the guys ignore me when i get there…which is ok, i’m an hour late…they are doing their thing. Now one of the members of the fb group was there and i chilled and talked with him. We waited for like 20 min for them to focus on me to do stuff. So my boy suggested i start to do some tricking and basic stuff to get their attention. I warm up with some front walkerovers…a couple capoeira transitions then get into aerials…and then start helping my boy with some butterfly kicks/btwist instuctions cause he was having trouble. The stage combat guys finally start noticing me and are blown away…like losing their minds. I ry not to laugh cause its super basic stuff. They finally guy me into the combat stuff…they have me work one scene with the star.

Now in my head i wanna do superkicker stuff, but somehow i always end up doing capoeira stuff. Even though my base is in tkd. Now no biggie…they got me doing an outside crescent its capoeira style…get beat up by the star. But then they wanted me to do a double leg 540/parafuson. Basically looks like a sideflip with legs straight out…they have me stand like 5 ft away from the guy…they wanted me to stand even farther away. I’m thinking this is fucking stupid…i could be 3 inches from his face and i wouldnt hit him. lol. that’s the whole point of training, but w/e. Lemme fast forward to the stupid part of this day.

So my scene is done for the rehearsal, this is all to be filmed next weekend. so their working scenes with this fat gay biker dude, their working some kind of fall with the guy. They are doing some weird standing guillotine with the star and this old guy is gonna fall after they get the star to double leg the dude…now heres the big issue.

  1. they didnt teach the star how to do a double leg

  2. they didnt teach the biker dude to do a basic breakfall…kept landing on his butt.

i have been chilling on the side for the past half an hour surfing my phone…looking up stunt videos. Til i see wtf they are working on…i look to my boy and he looks back at me like his eyes said “yo nigga go save that old man”. The star kept double legging the old man but wasnt pulling his legs up from under him, so one leg would be on the ground and this old man is falling back on his leg. basically it was an acl tear waiting to happen.

I had to take over for 10-15 min to instruct the star on how to do a double leg…and instruct the biker on how to properly do a side breakfall.

this film is retarded…i was ready to quit til i talked to the director and found out he wants to do alot of martial arts stuff after seeing what i can do. he wants to work with me and my boy, said he could rent out the room we were in anytime he wants. but seriously…these stage combat guys should nevvvver instruct anyone to do stunts ever. Someone is gonna get seriously hurt.

Interesting.
Me and a buddy of mine have been working on our own separate short stories and were wanting to make them into a short film. His is about a serial killer and mine is about a man who has to rely on martial arts to save his kidnapped daughter. Now I suggested maybe doing a crossover where the Dad and the serial killer face off. So we are in very early stages and are focussing on plot, character design and some concept art. But I know I want it to look crisp and pro. We got a lot of work to do and since there are no stunt teams in Cincinnati I basically will be quarterbacking this thing.

I personally only enjoyed one or two fights from each film. In Flash Point, I loved street fight at the restaurant as it covered several disciplines. I could be a bit biased here considering it was the first film I saw Donnie star in. The last fight was alright, but for the most part, nah. Didn’t like how the fight had to end with a lock around the neck (forgive me I’m not familiar with terminology) as it felt pretty anti-climatic.

As for SPL, the only fight I enjoyed was him going off with Wu Jing with weapons. To be more specific, I enjoyed the very beginning up until he smashed Jing in the side with the baton, because the fight slowed waaaay down after that lol. I’m not saying they should’ve picked up the pace. The fatigue was shown and that is realistic, but the speed of the first wave was just so exciting I didn’t want it to end. Again, the last fight wasn’t as entertaining, the way he entranced the fight was so out of character. The fact there was no exchange of words was strange for a cop to just jump in to go kill someone.

You joined within the past 15 minutes. To these guys, you don’t have the power to request that from them. LOL!!

They were definitely rough with each other but Benny gets along fine with jackie. I’ve heard from various sources that Benny fought Ken Lo in the ring, but I cant find any proof of this on Benny’s kickboxing record.

i dunno bout them being rough…i was watching the meals on wheels fight just the other day. dudes were faking alot of the punches and kicks alot worse than a prowrestlers in the first few exchanges. like the space inbetween them was pretty big.

I knew that ending was coming but i was saying if it doesn’t come im gonna be pissed off with them

great short
