Actually, Fred Williamson is the real deal. It’s just that Jim Kelly got a little more shine for his martial arts skill than Fred. SOme of the people on that list I am surprise that they are even martial artist like Peter Mensah.
don cheadle needs to do martial arts movies…the lil stuff he does is great. his wing chun scene in rush hour 2 is awesome and all of traitor is badass.
Yeah, I know Fred Williamson was prevalent back then. He was a big part of the Blaxploitaion movement. But from reading the list, half the people I was like “Really?” I saw no Eamon Walker (Ed Romeo on Lights Out) nor did I see Kareem Abdul Jabar (who is actually a black belt iirc). Honestly if they wanted to compose a list, it could have been good if they actually did some research. Like the black guy who fought Jet Li in Kiss of the Dragon. Or Chiwetel Ejiofor (the protagonist in Redbelt) though I am unsure if he is a martial artist or not. Honestly it could have been a great way to help us find new talent.
Chiwetel Ejiofor is an english method actor, I remember seeing Redbelt and thought it was interesting for a BJJ flick so I checked out his creds, he kicked a lot of ass in theatre.
Also sure that Jabar actually didnt pick up any belts, Lee didnt use em and after Game of Death he was notorious for banging every chick he put his eyes on, so that probably took over from his training xD Also after Lee passed away it would be doubtful his superstar celebrity students would move on with Inosanto just due to the nature of the situation. I cant really think of any big shots that trained under Inosanto outside of fighters and Brandon Lee.
Most underrated black martial artist is Billy Blanks, sure his Tao Bo is a bunch of bullshit, but man his skills from his early movies were insane, like god tier kickboxing caught on film, I rank him higher than Jai White whom I consider probably the best martial artist making films today.
For the sake of nostalgia if your looking for high octane martial art movies, check out the works of See Yuen Ng btw, hes made some of the best iconic MA movies ever, Once Upon A Time In China series, No Retreat No surrender, King of Kickboxers (billy blanks xD), Drunken Master, God of Gamblers etc
He can be a bit heavy with using stunt doubles in his western flicks but fuck it, if you enjoy MA your gonna love what hes got. I leave with my favourite bromance. Damn shame about Rion Hunter his kung fu was legit as fuck.
lol a few years ago i was trying to find stunt people in boston to train with. his name came up on google…but by the time i found him he moved to cali…now i hear hes with the 100pound guys in la.
Ugh I thought Undisputed 1 and 2 were actually really good, the third one was terrible though. Like massive roid monkeys smashing each other for no damage and crazy off the wall gymnastics terrible. Adkins is going out of his Van Damme nut hugging ways to really emulate his idol, but instead of getting a few solid movies out then heading down B-Movie avenue, hes kinda just already went to making crap films. His Ninja movies were that shite i couldnt even get through them all.
Undisputed 4 could be good if its got a decent story and some more realistic fights, the first was the best and that was pure boxer, the 2nd was awesome because it was kinda brawler/mma, the 3rd was all street fighter and was just shite. Lets hope they reign in the bullshit next time round. I really hope for anything that the loser of the fights arent made to stand outside a bus stop and then gunned down by the army lol, wtf was that all about.
Undisputed 3 had Marko Zaror, which is really cool because it showed some new talent and dude is legitimately sweet. I agree the story is tired, but I enjoy the choreography. With Undisputed 2 you got to see Adkins show his ass, but a more toned down, a realistic fight scene could be what is needed for Undisputed 4 to be pretty sweet.
scott adkins and donnie yen really need to make a film together.
i will say one thing… even-though i enjoy most of donnie’s newer films i still prefer his older fight scenes, like the claw scene in legend of the wolf. i’m not really a fan of his newer fight style with the telegraphed punches that you can see from a mile away.
