The MarsGatti Farewell/Peace Out Thread

is ggpo better or worse than xbl for lag?

For low latency, people find there isn’t much difference (I prefer Xbox live, just feels like the game has less input lag, but it might be my setup why GGPO seems less responsive, eg LCD lag or USB converter lag). For high latency, people pretty much agree that GGPO is better, but I still avoid high ping matches. No matter how good a netcode is, lag will always have a negative effect somehow.

What people are those? GGPO is better than XBL/PSN across the board. The same connection on GGPO is better than the same connection on XBL or the PSN.

What, do you just look in every thread looking for something to argue about? Have you ever had anything positive to say, EVER?

Most people would be anyone who actually has played on both XBL and GGPO. At low pings (say around 60-70 and lower) HDR on XBL and ST on GGPO are basically the same. Once you get to around 100 and a little over GGPO is a little bit less jumpy (I always play with no smoothing, last thing I want is input delay) than XBL. At 140-150 on up, GGPO is way better than XBL. PSN we won’t talk about (it’s a shame PSN never got the patch that XBL did, disgracefull Capcom!).

Anyway, no more derailing, Mars - you da man! Hope to still run into you on XBL, PSN, or GGPO, always had some of the most fun sets playing against you (lots of exciting back and forth, LOL).

He got called out by basically everyone from Sabin to random person X in the “Hate on HDR thread” so he has migrated back here.

Mars is back… VFF still hates everything about everything in the universe… HDR forum feels just like home again.

Although I think I’ve figured out why VFF hates everything, and if I’m wrong, please feel free to hate on my being wrong… but your bio does describe you as a sports writer from the NY area… now… if you’re anywhere close to the city… the Knicks suck, the Giants tanked, the Nets are the worst franchise in the NBA, College ball is all but dead in NYC in terms of national importance, there is no college football, the Rangers and the Islanders are somewhere beneath the basement I think… I mean you got the Jets? At least you got those Yankees right?

So, in the harshest media environment (especially for sports) in the country, you are a sportswriter (which means you know you’re stuff, which is evidenced by your insightful knowledge of SF history, even if it is always shared with the stiff upper lip of disdain for all opinions not yours), for a bunch of teams which are terrible and you are driven by an overwhelmingly negative media atmosphere. This would inevitably turn anyone into a knowledgable, yet angry man.

And that my friends is what we call (mostly) baseless hyperbole.

^ lol

Mars, don’t go - I’m not down owning you.

And by “owning you”, I mean “getting owned by you”.

GGPO does run noticeably better than either HDR online at any level of ping with compatible input/display setups (except to certain locations/players like NYC that always seem to lag), although it’s also true that the difference isn’t as severe until you approach higher and higher pings. If I felt the difference was small enough (sure, HDR’s is good and one of the best fighting game netcodes), I would use it all the time to practice for HDR tourneys; but sadly, I never thought that was the case. So to ensure smooth play, I have to rely on GGPO to perfect my timing and strategies that more closely reflect offline play while occasionally going to HDR to refresh my familiarity with its rule changes (this may not work for characters that play very different though). I feel that PSN HDR’s netcode is only a tiny bit worse than XBL so I’ll get on either if I need the HDR familiarity and there’s comp around.

As for Mars, you need to maintain some confidence, man. I should have shared some stories with you about how at one point, I doubted I would get any better since it seemed I’d exhausted claw’s tools. But it happened and before you know it, a year has passed, you learn more tidbits, and you can suddenly beat players you used to have trouble with. It’s up to you what you want to do (sure, you’re not quitting now but this may pop up in your mind again next time) but we’re always ready for more players.

I’ve often thought about calling it quits. I think about it all the time, even now. I remember the first time I ever played against mad possum or Vega/Immortal (he has a new name on SRK now, I don’t remember it). It was hopeless. They absolutely destroyed me. But 6 months or so passed, I played a lot, went to a couple majors, and I was beating mad possum and Immortal one of maybe 10 games on Xbox Live every once in a while. Flash forward to now, and at the recent Columbus Bar Battles 2, I did very well against Vega/Immortal, even on stream. I can only thank hard work and dedication for my continued improvement (and roybisel aka Frank lol).

But yeah, as mad possum said, sometimes I just need a break. I start playing a little less per day (usually I try to play at least 50-100 games a day) and just do other things until my interest is revived in ST for whatever reason. It seems to work out.

That’s pretty much the exact same thing I was thinking. These are peoples opinions I’ve seen in random threads when stuff crops up. Opinions are non scientific, so there’s no need to back it up with a reason. I’m lazy, but there is a search box to the top right if you really care about it that much.

Wait just a minute. I’m not going to just let you pooh-pooh the New York sports teams. :nono: This is a great time to follow sports in New York. The Knicks suck, but they’re coming into the offseason for the first time under the salary cap and can sign two max players. One of them could potentially be Lebron James.

The Giants are only a few years removed from the most exciting post season ever beating the undefeated Patriots for the Super Bowl.

The Jets have an up and coming franchise quarterback and they had a busy offseason improving a team that went to the AFC championship game last year.

The Yankees are on the verge of a new dynasty.

The Mets suck, but they’re more fun that way, so that’s a good thing.

No one in New York really cares about the New Jersey Nets or College sports. And no one in general cares about hockey, so those don’t count.

LOL

Now let’s be honest. Good for the Yankees and Jets, but New York LOVES it when basketball is the talk of the town. NYC is at its best when the Knicks are good, I’d grant you that you have a hell of a man leading the team in Donnie Walsh (Damn you for leaving the Pacers…), but I mean NYC is a “what have you done for me lately” type of city.

The Giants choked last season. People do care about the Rangers and Islanders, otherwise there woudln’t be two teams in NYC. The Knicks might have salary cap, but when LeBron says no thanks to NYC, is the city going to implode on itself? Or you know what would be awesome? If LeBron went to the ‘Brooklyn’ Nets… I’d love to see the absolute dispair hit the faces of Knicks fans across the country… oh my that’d be so awesome… There are lots of people in NYC talking about Steve Lavin bringin’ back St. Johns to prominence, I’d grant that the Northeast has never cared about college football but come on… NYC has seen better times in sports…

Of course I’d love to hear the sportswriter’s view on the state of NYC sports lol.

Points for total thread derailment though…

Mars obit turns into Mars non-obit turns into commentary on GGPO vs. XBL (again… ugh…) which leads to witty commentary pats self on back (lol) which leads to discussion on NYC sports…

YAY FOR TANGENTS! Now where’s Coth when I need him to do some discussion on tangent planes and higher dimensional manifolds???

Looking for imaginary hyperbolic cotangents?

Sweden could totally beat your country in Hockey and Soccer.

Totally.

… Women’s Hockey no… Women’s soccer no… men’s hockey… maybe… men’s soccer… probably.

This my friends is what thread derailment looks like. Geometry FTW.

And… maaaaaybe… I mean go graph some IHCs. I think they quite nicely provide a graphical representation of what thread derailment looks like. lol. Simple example, graph COTH(Z) on the complex plane and you’re going to get first order poles… I’m totally calling out the poles as points of derailment… The question is… once you get on the derailment train… can you ever get off?

:confused::confused::confused:

Yeah I don’t know what happened to the Giants last season, they were 5-0 to start the year and then cough cough.

I do miss the 90’s rivalries between the Knicks, Bulls and Pacers.

So doesn’t anyone else besides me hates Guile and thinks one less Guile player is good? :wgrin:

Great 30 for 30 movie done by ESPN on the rivalry between Knicks / Pacers in the mid 90s. THAT was a rivalry. Reggie in the Garden… 8 points in 8.7 seconds… NYC’s own Marc Jackson coming back to torture the Knicks with his sweet moves… The Dunkin Dutchman versus Patrick “I miss point blank layups and cost my teams series’” Ewing… (I love the Knicks can’t you tell?) lol.

Best NBA series ever played though, Pacers / Bulls 1998 Eastern Conference Finals… the closest the Bulls ever came to losing when Jordan was really playing. 1994 / 1995 Knicks / Pacers come damn close… talk about blood baths, its like watching the bad boy Detroit Pistons play the Celtics all over again… talk baout physical! The NBA needs more rivalries now…

Oh and man, we know Mars is alive, not dead, not retired… this thread hasn’t been about that for at least like… 6 posts! Get with the program! lol

You forgot about all the guaranteed wins Ewing declared right before going out and losing. That layup he missed to lose the series was after he said “I guarantee we’ll win” before the game. IIRC. Just like he said he guarantees he’ll beat the Rockets for the title.

And, I hated watching Marc Jackson and his shimmy dance. And I hated Reggie Miller and his blatant offensive fouls where he pushed off the defender and they never got called. And Rik Smits and his timely baskets, ughhh.

Man I’m glad the Knicks suck so I don’t have to put up with disappointing playoff series. That stuff scared me for life.

Oh but you do remember the Larry Johnson 4 point buzzer beater right? That’s the only positive I can remember. That was right before the Knicks got embarrassed by the Spurs in the finals.:sad::sad:

Oh man… those were the days! We totally need Knicks / Hicks back (Although, that was never an apt description of Indianapolis or Indiana at large but it played well for the national media and for sports writers like VFF needing to hate on something not his… see how I did that? Again with the mostly baseless hyperbole?). What needs to happen to get the Knicks and Pacers to be good again?

It’s a sad time for basketball… I mean LeBron is in Cleveland so people care, but who the hell cares about Cleveland the city? What history does Cleveland basketball have? NONE. Cleveland’s most famous moment pre LeBron is Craig Ehlo getting shot over by Michael in game 5 of their opening round series in (I think…) 1989. Orlando? If Howard isn’t there, they still are terrible and they’re the team that ‘once had Penny and Shaq’. All the teams that should be good in the East, Boston, Indiana, New York, Chicago, that’s where the NBA should want the East to be good. Proof its not a rigged league, three of those 4 teams are garbage (Yeah you too Chicago… just better smelling.)

I don’t talk about grandmama… she scares me in nightmares…

And don’t hate on Marc Jackson’s shimmie! You wish you had such sweet moves! lol

And fouls are only fouls if they’re caught… Reggie was the best and playing inside your head.

Yeah those were the days indeed. I think the NBA ruined itself with the new cap. It’s more popular in China than in the U.S. now. David Stern is the one who needs to retire.
