The make your own comic/find srk talent thread

You mean you didn’t continue drawing while you were on the toilet? I am disappointed. Anyway, the rest of us would like to see what you came up with.

maxx- I also like the second logo more. Except I don’t like the z at the end of “gunz”. I think words look nicer when they’re spelled correctly.

About the whole cliche thing- Almost any plot these days is cliched, or influenced by something. I think it’s okay if a story starts out kind of cliched as long as it quickly moves forward and shows that it’s not entirely contrived. Execution of ideas matters a lot. All the little nuances of characterization and setting- that’s the kind of stuff that helps to sell a story, even if it starts with the same premise as a billion other stories out there. I do think B. Pinny made some excellent points in his post.

i used the z because i was worried about copyright infringement. i remember marvel had a lil young guns program running for 2 years promoting up and coming talent and marvel likes to copyright everything…even the word superhero. As well as their was a rap crew called young guns. so i assumed one of those mofos would have it copyrighted.

I will try to get it scanned soon.

I had to cut the project short. Diarrhea ruled out the use of caffeine, and without caffeine, I passed out in pretty short order. I thought about finishing the project at a later date, but I’m afraid the energy has gone out of it.

I handpicked my idea specifically for the 24 hour comic, because I feel it’s a story that is best told in one long marathon session. It (please don’t laugh) is an attempt to trace time from the beginning of the universe to present day. I got as far as the formation of the galactic clouds, and that’s when my bowels rebelled against me.

Which is exactly why you just replied to it, and were so hurt by said opinions that you actually thought I was out to “ruin your dreams” when it’s clear the intent was anything but. By all means get into comics, but you have to realize something now:

What is going to be the motivation for you and your artist?

Answering what motivates you is going to be easy. You have a story and you want to share it. If you didn’t want to share it, you wouldn’t bother putting it on paper or having an artist draw it. You’d just keep it in your head. You wanting to put it down on paper and turn it into a reality? That’s you wanting to share it with the world, if not even one person.

But how about your artist? What will he have at stake when rendering your characters, dialogue and fight scenes? Why should he bother? One reason is that he’s also invested some input into the story and likes it so much that he also wants to bring it to life. Another reason could be that he wants to put comic pages in his portfolio. Yet another could be that you’re paying him.

In other words, you need to lose your self-righteous attitude right now, because you have to give your baby up to an artist to draw it, and you need to give him a good reason.

If this really is your intention, then you fucked up. I’m a writer/artist, I gave you *constructive criticism, *and then you shot me down. You said earlier that you didn’t want to compromise your erratic vision for your story, and didn’t have to because you weren’t writing for a big publisher. Now you want to enter the industry? It’s one or the other, man. If you want to enter the industry, you’ll be encountering guys a hundred times harsher than me, for good reason - comics are their livelihoods. You know all the best creators? Lee, Kirby, Ditko, **Eisner? Comics put food on their table. When how well their art is received determines whether or not you can feed your family tonight, you better believe that’s a motivator to get your shit together.

Your synopsis for your story turned me off. The first thing you need to do is somehow figure out how to make at least an overview of your story sound interesting. Remember, the synopsis you’re going to use to attract any potential artists has to be clear enough to understand, concise enough to understand quickly, and exciting enough to want to learn more. If you want to get into the industry, you need to learn how to be a good salesman, because that’s exactly what you’re going to be doing - selling yourself and your ideas. You tried to sell everyone reading this thread on your story. I told you I didn’t like it. What you should have done was show me an example of why your story’s worth following - what you did was tell me to fuck myself.

It’s fine to treat anonymous posters on the internet like this, but if you think you can treat your collaborators or potential investors like this, you should hang it up and not quit your day job.

Edit: Somewhat unrelated to the discussion at hand, but Sano’s art is charming. You should post in Fan Art.

i’m done replying to you. i’m moving on.

Shizzle, this is a really good thread. Got plenty of ideas I need to show you guys. This post is just a reminder to myself to get some shit done.

Oh and to Maxx, very interested in your idea man. Post up some shit asap.

Edit: I want in on this group.

lol well looks like maxx wont be getting Bowling Pin a christmas card this year.

Damn, Bowling Pin beasted. But in the long run, he did speak truth. I wasn’t gonna say anything about maxx’s story, but I guess Bowling Pin had the same thought process as me. I mean shit, if you can’t take constructive criticism, then why bother posting up your idea? Welcome to the internet. Hell, welcome to SRK.

I mean, it’s cool to have an idea for a comic book and whatnot, but by no means is your idea all that original. You’re taking too many elements from fighting games.

I remember reading this article in Wizard back in 1997 about how to get into the industry. It basically summarized how hard it is to get into the industry. Whether it be small press or the big two(DC and Marvel, hell even Image). It’s not easy at all. Your idea will probably turn a few heads, but you better pray there isn’t someone there that actually played SF back in the day because they’ll call you out on your idea.

Also, writing a comic book based around martial arts is pretty hard. Anyone can write an action book in five seconds. You have to find a motivation for your characters. Why they do what they do and what is their overall goal in their journey to the top. If you read Hajime no Ippo, then that’s some good source material.

But yeah, fuck comics. It’s really not worth the headache if you have the patience to deal with the bullshit that comes with it.

JOE Q EDIT - And yeah, you did contradict yourself on the whole “I don’t want to get into the industry, but I want to make a group for all of us that want to get into the industry” post.

i’ve honestly only taken 2 elements from fighting games…and only one can be said to be kof.

the millionaire buisness man and the 3 on 3 concept…thats the only thing that can be said to be taken from fighting games.

but honestly i’ve destracted people from the idea of my thread and its turned into a lets constructively criticize maxx…which has been going on for like 2 pages. their are other people who have ideas in here and i want them to voice their opinions and i wanna help some people with their art and such. so let’s drop any deconstructioning of my ideas from now on…and move on to focus on helping others?

coco_j: do you draw or write?

I’ve been reconsidering what you all have been said. And many have valid views…bowling has valid views but since i’ve only given tidbits those views are only on the tidbits of what i’ve said. Also since the story diviates from fighting mid to end of the first part of saga 1 it can’t truly be viewed as fighting from that point but as fantasy/adventure.

No your right i can’t do purely 100% fighting…not even cause i’d only be writing for a select crowd but because thats not how the story works.

also ive only taken 2 aspects from fighting…like i said before the 3 on 3 concept is very unique and sumtin not done in comics. I’ve seen tag teams and obviously 1 on 1 but never 3 on 3 or just really team based in the long run.

As well as i have some other ideas floating in my head. My dream is to draw my own comics…but that may not happen til i feel my skills are up to par. I find writing is 10x easier and so thats what i may do at first. If i can get this group together i believe we can do sum serious damage.

I think its easier to break in through the backdoor…right now american managa is on a serious uprising but alot of the new kids don’t understand the art rules. And since alot of us do, we can do some real damage at anime conventions…promoting and such. I really wanna get this group together and see what everyones talents lie in and see if we can create our own independant comic.

I dont want to be viewed as a close minded ninny so i have taken the time to rethink what people have said. Yes i was angry before because well when someone comes in saying ruining dreams since xxxx…ya that’ll tick you off a bit. maybe it was the presentation that pissed me off…but i don’t want to be viewed as someone who can’t take the heat.

so ya.

From my experience, when people critique your work, you just can’t take it personally. Otherwise you’ll just go crazy. I’ve taken a few creative writing classes myself. Of course I always want people to like what I’ve written and be blown away by my indubitable genius. That doesn’t really happen, though. In a class with even just over a dozen other people, opinions are going to go all over the place.

It pissed the shit out of me when other people would trample over the hard work I spent writing even just 8 pages of story. One time this girl brushed off my entire piece by writing, “If this is a parody, you’re doing okay so far. If not…?” How much more condescending can you get? Comments like that don’t do crap to improve your writing, but sometimes what people say actually make sense.

Pinny and Deathy both had some valid points and I am glad you are reevaluating your stance. Yeah, you only told us about tidbits of your comic-in-progress so of course when people chime in they can ONLY comment on the tidbits you’ve already mentioned. If you think they are off the mark, then so be it. But you just can’t get upset when people are just trying to help you. It’s not like they read your mind and completely dismissed your every idea.

Of course… Crappy writers like Michael Turner have churned out big hits solely on their (crappy) art alone, so what the fuck do I know. It blows me away that Daniel Way gets to write comics.

“If this is a parody, you’re doing okay so far. If not…?”

You see something like this would piss me off, its human nature to feel that way.

Theirs a big difference in constructive criticism and flat out telling someone their idea is shit.

Just how does that help you get better, it wont.

Ive spent alot of time studying art/animation and believe me Ive had many “well its shit anit it” comments, so much so that I just take it on the chin and try to improve.

I wish I’d had an enormous metal bat with that engraved across it when I was in college.

To anyone lurking, there’s a lot of great tips being said in this thread, especially about how to take a critique. There’s gotta be MOAR people on SRK with stuff they wanna share…

(i’m not ready to share yet, lol)

I post a regular strip (Updated weekly) in the fan art gallery that I’m looking into getting published:

Duckie the Self Aware Duck:

And there’s my Valin comic thread I did a few years back. This is issue 21 in an ongoing story I’ve worked on since I was in highschool:

You’ll have to excuse some of the artwork. Old stuff

Got alot of ideas under my cap, but am focusing on Duckie and work ATM. You guys should really have a dig in the Fan Art Gallery there’s heaps of cool stuff in there:
Strider short by SFMC
Oro vs Ibiki Backup by Chainwhore

Lots of hidden gems in there.

Just remembered fighting art I did years ago for a pitch (using the company’s characters).

Yeah. (these might be too big, but here goes)

I can switch styles to suit a project. I’m currently doing so w/some indie PS & Flash, scanning in paper in pencil art for cleanup.
Thanks for checking 'em out…

@Maxx: I’m really vague man… both write and draw. But like you mentioned, my skills just aren’t up to par to draw my own comics (well some of them).

Like you I’m working on a fighting comic (among others) and have been for like 7 years now. I actually begged and pleaded to get Sano to write it and it’s under the fan fiction section. As he was writing it I was re-writing my version. So Sano’s work is quite different to what I’ve got in mind now.
Still dug the hell out of what he done though… but now I’ll be taking bits of his story and combining it to mine since it constantly evolves. Been reading through the Anime cliche thread and making sure the finished story doesn’t have too much of those things, and it won’t since I initially began creating this due to my annoyances with other fighting comics.

Anyway, all I’ve really done is come up with vague story arc outlines and character designs for it, which when I get some free time will hopefully post up.

So basically, the main thing I’m looking at is character design and some art possibly, and writing chores.

Peace yall.
