Hmmm…samsho is really the only thing I can think of that comes to mind but its well implemented unlike the rubberband ultra mechanic.
Garou essentially has a customizable version, you just get to pick whether you’re strongest after being beaten up or before.
Complaining about ultras is so played out, though.
Did you forget KoF with the SDMs and HSDMs? They could only activate when you were low on life.
I remembere afterwards, but the biggest difference is that it was implemented well into those games…capcom has a lot to learn about this mechanic.
Honestly I prefer the Ultra system to any SNK system for the sole purpose of you actually get to land Ultras. In KoF and even partly in SamSho you get your super attack by getting beat on and you die before you can pull it out. At least with the Ultra you can use the damn thing before you get K.O.'d.
Isn’t that the whole point though? That you don’t always get to use it in SNK games? I don’t even play SNK games, but I thought that was what the problem with the Ultras was.

I think ultras wouldn’t have been as big an issue if they had other ways of landing them that didn’t happen off reversals. I feel like they should have to earn them. DPs are definitely not earning your ultra. But overall it’s a pretty stupid mechanic… I’d prefer ultra to build some other way other than just getting your ass beat. Maybe only off of focus absorbs or something.
