ummm what? People used supers because they were safe? What? So back in the day things like ken’s shoryureppa and his shippu jinrai kyaku was safe or guiles double flash kick? What, what?
Now i’m defintely confused. I’m pretty sure people used supers mainly for the damage output, shippu jinrai kyaku was NOT safe in 3S but it was good because you can hit confirm it with alot of things and combo it. Most supers have ALWAYS been used mainly for hit confirmable combos to dish out maximum damage, either that or punishing an unsafe move, it was never really used in any other fashion, maybe occasionally for chip damage, there were some unique supers that you’d use for anti air like shinryuken or giefs air grab super but they were by no means “safe” or other miscellaneous uses like grab supers or roses illusion super.
Supers play the same sort of role here in SF4, they’re just not as significant for some characters because of the importance of EX moves as well as FADCing.
Well they weren’t primarily used just because it was relatively safe to throw out, the main use was to dish out hit confirmable damage or to get some sort of guaranteed damage through punishing.

What made people use supers back in the day was that did a shit load of damage when they connected and usually did a lot of chip.
The problem is your trying to apply rules from a completely different game into one thats comming out in a month. I dont know about you, but i played Super Turbo 15 years ago. I dont want to play that game forever leave it in the past exactly where it belongs.
His ultra was never designed to be an anti air, and as far as his Counter Ultra jump in’s are going to be free damage because you can plainly see when something will hit or whiff on a jump in. Only a moron would activate ultra simply because someone jumped without seeing if they actually commit to an attack first. The game system gives you more than enough time to input Ultra in time to catch jump in’s you just have to be smart.
His Super on the other hand works just fine when you ::gasp:: cancel it from low forward kick that stuffs any jumping attack linking into super for really good damage (like 45+%) Linking supers has been in EVERY Street Fighter game that had them available there is no reason to take them out now. Especially from a character that really needs it to get damage.
so you want to remove the only reliable way to land his super so that you can throw it out full screen, have it blocked, and get your teeth kicked in? safer does not equal safe unless your spacing is good – and if you can space a 5 hit super that travels the entire length of the screen you may as well quit street fighter and run for president
lol i dont know about you but i rather have something that is hit confirmable and provides a means of GUARANTEED damage over throwing something out merely because I can (because it’s safe), fei needs more confirmable, reliable ways to land his ultra 1, either that or at least buff up the damage on the partial ultra or make the 3 hits on the partial ultra easier to land.
His super is great! It combos well, and actually has some utility outside of combos. His normals and specials, while they could be tweaked, are decent enough.
It’s his ultras that need work. They’re crap. You could leave all his other stuff alone, fix his ultras, and he’d be a contender.
Alot of supers were quite safe in the alpha games.
VVVV I wasn’t insinuating that I agree with InTheLightBlue’s logic, just that it’s not completely devoid of merit. I agree that his super already has tons of applications and if improving would mean downgrading some other aspect of his build then it’s just not worth it.

edit: it isn’t the safe super that i have an issue with because frankly i’d take anything at this point – it’s the idea that a reasonable tradeoff is removing that which actually makes his super one of the better ones in the game
Yes I remember those days, sakura’s Karu Ichiban super was hella safe on block, same with sagat’s tiger raid as well as ryu’s Shinkuu Tatsumaki Senpukyaku and they were very good for dealing chip damage but again most supers were used for damage output.
I would personally however never trade off hit confirmable damage for safety ever.
Well anyways, all this talk of potential updates to fei has me sad because fei only needed a few upgrades to finally become a "good"character. Now Infi brought up some updates I had suggested awhile ago that he claimed are not rational…to be honest I forget much of that post but I do remember some key points I did make that i think every fei player would agree with:
More normals cancel to rekka: Yang in 3s had amazing offensive diversity because he was able to combo his rekka’s off almost all of his normals. Considering the damage scalling in SF4, I wouldn’t mind taking a damage cut by 10% if it meant giving fei the option to rekka off any normal.
SF2 style CW: In SF2, CW’s are used to apply preasure due to being safe on block and being fairly fast on start-up. They also forced a mix-up because the move was a overhead that you could combo off. In SF4, the animation was changed so that the CW could travel further and on a lower arch which isn’t exaclty bad but rather pointless when you consider the fact that the move is not a overhead and not safe on block. His EX CW is fine as it is and I don’t even mind him losing his juggle potential he had in SF2 with his Cw.
SF2 Style Rekka: This isn’t news to anyone, but safe rekka strings would really help fei preasure his opponent and not be so damn vulnerable after every attempt to move in close. As it stands, rekka’s are highly situational and only practical in combo’s which IMO sort of defeats there purpose. On that note, I think that his EX rekka’s should come out at the same range as his HP rekka with faster start-up/recovery and be able to juggle the opponent on the last hit if you do it near a corner. As it stands, the EX rekka’s serve virtually no purpose and by adding the juggle property you can give fei a good ultra set-up.
Ultra: I don’t think I need to explain the faults with his ultra, basically it’s just pure window dressing in most cases lol.
Pokes: Fei doesn’t have a bad poking game, but I sure do miss his c.HP hitting low and his f.HK from SF2T. Additionally, his jumping cross-up HK from SF2 would be a nice touch because a very good cross-up might actually make fei somewhat of a imposing character for once lol.
I think those are the main points I made in that thread a long time ago, I wouldn’t even bother with his command grab as I feel it should be removed as it doesn’t fit his character design IMO.
Yeah man, back in SSF2 his j,HK was a cross-up much like seth’s. It was removed in SSF2T but the animation of the j,HK was recycled into his CW and his j.HK was completly re-animated. Oddly enough, in SSF2 he had the ability to rekka off any normal…seems like fei has only recieved nerfs since the time of his inception lol.
What im wondering is,
Why not cut out the middle man and just have lower hp with the removal of ultras?
Because we all know its going to be used in a combo at best.
But I suppose being able to hurricane kick over a shoto fireball is partly to blame.
