The "Make Fei Long competitive" thread

Yeah I’ve played Emblem a ton. He definitely had my number but it wasn’t as bad as 0-10. Started out like 20-3 but got more close to even the more we played. I say closer but he still raped me more than I raped him. Biggest problem was his comeback potential and higher health / damage than Fei. I could have the lead the whole match and BAM tiger upper FADC GG. Atleast that’s a bit weaker now. I was hoping tiger knee would see some nerfs in terms of frame advantage and hitbox but atleast it’s damage is reduced. 1 tiger knee hit = 1 fei combo.

So yes I think it will still be challenging but if Fei can now use ultra 1 in matches, this match will be WAY closer to even than before. Fei’s got the tools to beat Sagat but not the damage.

All I want is for the netcode in SSFIV to allow me to actually pull off the HP or cr.LP link after the heavy Chicken wing…

Seriously, Ive had the most annoying afternoon online where I was getting beaten by mashed out Dp’s and ultras and I mean mashed out, apparantly (to get all technical) I get 4 frames advantage on hit yet they are consistantly busting my ass with Dps. Im pulling off the links in training and offline perfect 90% of the time, and yet I think I got one clean link online tonight. But thats netcode so nothing can really be changed there, unless they have relaxed the window :pray:. most of my complaints with Fei could be based soley on Lag though as Ive no offline opponents.

The links and combos that Fei has are so strict yet they pay off so badly, but easier links with some of the other cast reward you with huge damage. Overall I think hes a great character, but something is definatly amiss. I used to main Gen but moving to a fightstick proved too hard to re-learn so I moved Fei up from 2nd place.

All in all I think after all the time I spent trying to re-learn Fei on a fightstick (from a pad) it turns out I was hitting the links perfect (I thought I was being sloppy on a pad) but online apparantly hitting a perfect 1 frame link = random crap. He either needed a slight health increase or Damage increase or somethng as small as a longer range dash… something, just to take away that “Im hadicapping myself with this character” feeling. Instead we get a Counter Ultra :zzz:

on another note, i know fei didnt get anything new, and he will more than likely be the same as he was before the patch minus the infinite, but he may have gotten better by way of the top chracters coming down to earth a bit. we are kinda in a bad spot. with all his matches being between 4-6, and 5-5, we couldnt really get a whole lot without pushing fei right to the top. maybe the small tweaks to various normals can make it so he has more 5-5 than 4-6

:rofl: Yeah thats true. I suppose it was the moving from Pad that got my blood boiling so much, its been a good 2 months now though so things are starting to click together.
As far as Fei not getting any buffs, Ive a feeling he may turn out just fine if (and its a huge if) the changes to the other characters help him. I’ve been reading around some of the threads a long time and I can understand a lot of the changes even if most are rumours. I just hope they get the balance right.

A little off topic:
The funny thing is I could see the Gen nerfs coming, hes FAR better than most give him credit for and after a while using him it becomes apparant that he had some serious pottential and a ton of options in any situation, maybe thats why Fei is annoying me lately, You spend so long getting your options down only to get beaten by the stupidest of things. Like crouch jap spamming Boxers (yawn) or Dp spamming Kens.
Honest I’m losing to the obviously terrible players more than ones above my own skill level. Either scrubby or lame tactics can beat me everytime or the scrubby play is unreadable as theres no patterns to read :sweat:

Oh well… I enjoy Fei too much to abondon him, plus I doubt anyone played Fei in SFIV thinking he had no flaws or bad matchups.

EDIT: I seem to have just agreed with you as you edited that post :rock: I honestly like the Gief matchup lol… for some reason I dread Boxer matchups just because they put me to sleep. cr.LP, cr.LP, cr.LK xx Buffalo headbutt… Ultra… yawn.

Yeah I don’t care what anyone says about fei > geif. Unless you react instantly to everything all the time and make no mistakes and read geif perfectly and hit the recovery frames of every whiffed lariat with rekkas magically that fight doesn’t even resemble easy. I just say fuck it and hover over seth at tournaments till people choose someone else and let me pick Fei or give me a free win.

I think one thing that will always keep me coming back to fei is his reverse dragon punch. I can react so much faster from blocking and if I’m too slow I just block anyway so it’s really a huge advantage having that input instead of a forward DP. I find myself trying to DP a lot of pokes on reaction just because it can’t hurt if I fuck up.

Fuuuuuuuck they confirmed on the stream, you can’t juggle ultra 1 off DP. No word on the command grab though.

Wait… you could juggle ultra 1 off DP in SF4. You can’t now? Or do they mean the full cinematic? Or do they mean the DP xx FADC, HK CW ultra thing I’ve been pushing for all this time?

I’m confused and about || that close to ditching Fei altogether.

Yeah, I was pretty sure that they wouldn’t make Ultra 1 activate into enter the dragon from a DP. They’d have to reanimate so that third hit, rather than the second, activates the sequence, and I was confident that Capcom would not put in that much effort. But if it works off of EX command grab I’d still be somewhat pleased.

I’m guessing they meant anything other than 2 hits like we already have.

Well you can get three from DP FADC – but yeah, only two from the combo that’s actually viable. So in other words, fuck all has changed. Awesome!

Yeah They said after FADC or juggle it wont give the full animation. I’m curious why they gave Ken the full Ultra 1 animation but not Fei.

Chicken Wing is faster atleast supposedly. They acted like it was a lot better.

Faster than a quadruple amputee climbing an escalator going down isn’t exactly difficult

Besides all that really means is that it’s probably lost its funny invincibility properties; it’ll still fly over crouching opponents, it still won’t break focus, it still won’t hit overhead, it’ll still land inside sweep range on whiff, etc

Yeah you’re probably right sadly. They said Juri and Dudley are really good though so I guess I’m happy. Sorry to see Fei getting the shaft though.

Im ok with him just having a chicken that goes over punches on the ground and hits with middle.

Though being able to link per say a chicken wing to a dragon kick even with one hit would be a god send.
In HDR went a bit crazy, was able to get 2 chicken wings a dragon kick, then if you timed it at the corner right, you would hit with every punch of your super.

Fuuuuuuck Wiz says you can’t combo ultra from command grab. Oh well. Fail Long.

Ok, so MrWizard says that, as far he knows, ultra doesn’t combo from command grab. I’m still rather skeptical, as I doubt he personally tried doing it, nor did he say anything about the EX command grab, which is what Seth Killian stated would permit the combo into ultra.

Counter ultras will greatly improve his game, it’ll make characters reluctant to throw out various things like…guiles double sweep! and if we’re lucky it’ll even work on T.hawks sweep.

Makoto can confirm ultra off a regular command grab, and it has a much, much faster startup than Tenshin.

Even if it turns out that Fei can hit ultra from EX tenshin, that doesn’t justify the disparity.
