Well the mystery was straight up entertainment, these characters wouldn’t develop if it wasn’t for all the mysterious things that was happening to them.
Upon further review, some interesting points here that I haven’t paid attention to.
What was the point of the Island and the light they were supposed to protect? The Island was this mysterious place where miracles and unexplained things happened, but what did this have to do with the ending? I understand that Jacob needed a replacement, and someone to kill smoke monster. And to do that there would need to be someone like Desmond who could survive the “light” in the cave. But how the hell did Widmore know this? Not that Desmond could survive, but that someone needed to remove something from the light to be able to kill the smoke monster.
It just seems like the island was just a place where they all met, had a great and amazing experience, but also a place where they ALL DIED!
Btw, Walt had basically moved on from the island. He left and wasn’t apart of the rest of them, so that’s why he wasn’t in “purgatory”. Also, Michael wouldn’t be there either because HE KILLED a few of them. Why the hell would they want him there to “move on”?
Also I can’t help but think it felt really rushed, that we spent way too much time in the final season with unimportant stuff (remember all those characters and goings on at the temple that amounted to nothing?) and then they had to sprint to shoehorn the plot to fit with JJ’s original ending.
And for some reason I’m left feeling really bad for Jack. Sawyer and Kate and Hurley get to live, but Jack dies alone on a damn island?
yeah man, Jack dying like that really made me sad.
I was all about the mystery and the unraveling, and all I got was an alternate timeline/purgatory ending?
also…if these characters all died in their own time and whatnot, ure telling me that they ALL suffered from amnesia and had to “spiritually” touch each other to remember their time on the island.
And why leave purgatory, seemed like an alright life, especially now that they all reconnected. K why am I even trying to make sense of this show.

When Hurley was faking that he was talking to Jacob, Richard asked Hurley to ask Jacob what the Island was… did we ever figure that out? Also wasnt Christian wearing the white shoes significant to something?
i guess they diddnt flat out say it, but thats what i thought. Man in black was lied to his whole life thinking that there was only the island. Then learned there was a whole world out there and he just wanted to go home. then haters gatta try to stop him for no good reason. Then he was murdered and made into this monster. Poor guy.
Meanwhile Jacob summons people to the island and alot of people die just so he could prove a point about human kind and get someone else to do his dirty work. Seems like a Douche to me.
Jacob’s brother died when he threw him into the light, the black smoke took the form of his brother and his ambitions. Jacob has been trying to undue a wrong all this time by bringing people into the island so he himself can’t kill MiB.

I think that was what the writers meant by genius twist, they had been telling us all along what was gonna happen. In detail even! I am so glad I did not waste 6 years of my life to be slapped with such a shitty ending -_-

well yeah, the whole purgatory thing is a complete cop-out that doesn’t answer ANYTHING related to the main storyline, the afterlife thing is just a plot point they introduced in the very end of the shows life, it was not important to the story until then and when you found out what it was you knew it had absolutely NO bearing on what would happen in the main storyline - more than anything it offers emotional closure which is an easy thing to do, shit they could’ve just put in a montage at the end of the show and gotten the same result without pouring so much effort into it

Everyone should stop theorizing about the end of this show because your theories are not correct nor incorrect - because the show writers don’t even know what the fuck they wrote about so there is no true theory. I could say the whole series was a monkey’s day dream during monkey sex in mating season at a fucking african safari tour - and guess what, that theory has as much validity as any other. The end. fuck this showwwwwww.

We didnt hate it for 6 years, smart ass. We hate it now because season 6 was junk and the finale was the nail in the coffin. This show was godlike seasons 1-5.
Im still wondering how Jacob got all those magic powers… you know. like being able to make motherfuckers live forever, make shit that would allow him to spy on people thousands of miles away from some fucked up light house, COME BACK FROM THE DEAD AND VISIT PEOPLE IN SPIRIT FORM, and oh yea, not be killable by old smokey.

Why do I give a shit that Jack moved on?? His character sucked anyways - tell me more bout the goddamn Island and this mother fucking Ninja that apparently “really existed” based on the shows Finale… And FUCK YOU if you think im buying the DVD to get none of these answered anyways.

People bashing the ending just don’t understand what the writers were going for.
First, they were not in purgatory, purgatory is where souls are sent to be punished. The place they were in was the exact opposite. It was basically a waiting room for them to reunite with the most important people in their lives before they move. The time they spent on the island was so important to them that even in death they couldn’t let it go. Before any of them were on the island they had nothing of value in any of their lives. But the island gave each of them a powerful bond that actually gave each of their lives meaning. In the end the flash sideways was meant to be closure for us as to where each character ended up after the final scene. It doesn’t take anything away from what transpired on the island, it only makes those events that much more meaningful.
The actual ending of the island was beautiful. The combination of every event that’s transpired since the crash gave Jack the resolve to ultimately save the island and the world even at the cost of his own life. Hugo was the perfect person to leave in charge of the island considering hes never done anything but try and help people since the series began. Ben regaining power as the number 2 after redeeming himself was a great end for his character. And now he has a leader that actually trusts and respects him unlike jacob did. Claire and kate get to go home to Aron. And Sawyer was finally able to leave the island he grew to hate.
Yes there are still mysteries about the island, but that is whats fun about lost. If we were given every little detail it would lose its mysterious appeal. But, This show was all about the characters, and this season tied up all their lose ends, and showed us the ultimate fate of the characters we’ve been watching for the past 6 years. All in all there was really no better way to end the series.
