The Literature Thread (Yes, some of us still reed)

I’m about 45 pages in to Gravity’s Rainbow.

It just isn’t clicking for me yet.

I stopped reading 'Wealth of Nation’s halfway through. Too much wall-o-text to explain one point across. It’s like he expected the reader to not remember stuff he just said few paragraphs ago. Book needs a modern revision imo.
Anyways, as stated in the scifi thread, I’ve picked up and halfway in Timothy Zahn’s Star Wars: Survivor’s Quest book. I really hope J.J. Abrams has this guy as consultant in the upcoming SW movie.

Who here read Dracula? Bout to start that

Bram Stokers?
I liked it.

Dracula has interesting prose. The entire story is told in letters.

Yeah. I was looking for a copy of Hard Rain Falling and I couldn’t find one. So I just realized I have never read anything from Stoker. Why not start? Brahm is supposed to be THAT nigga.

But if anyone has any insight as to which edition is best/closest to Stoker’s OG, I’d gladly take it. I was thinking of the Barnes and Noble version. Is that ok? I’ve heard the amazon one is shitty.

You going to enjoy that book mang! That’s a great summer read. I’ve read this version back in school.

Once you’ve read it, you’d probably want to play Castlevania Symphony of the Night afterwards. I know i did.

Finished my third Neil Gaiman book. I usually read 2-3 to get an idea of an author’s style. I liked American Gods, Stardust was alright, and I was kind of disappointed with Neverwhere. Why do people hype up this guy so much?

You can try the Penguin Classics, or Dracula: Complete, Original Text (Forgotten Books)

Sandman. Goody would have been the person to ask, but Sandman is supposed to be far and away better than any of his novels. Though I’ve heard good things about American Gods and Anansi Boys

Besides the old Dragonlance Chronicles, Legends, Summer Flame, 2nd Generation books, the Fate of the Jedi series was good. Also, anyone remember the Tripod Trilogy? White Mountains, City of Gold and Lead, etc.

So I finished my latest novel sometime before Memorial Day and sent the first five pages to a potential publisher. I’m tired of this self-published bullshit: I want people to see my work on a publicized scale. Right now I’m having a buddy from my days on Tekken Zaibatsu do the proofreading and subsequent editing while I search for any chronological inconsistencies I might have made. It’s a sequel to my historical fantasy Blade in the Snow which was set in December 1867. The new story is set in New Orleans in February 1872…but like an idiot, I kept calling it “five years later” instead of four which is important for a number of reasons that I won’t get into here.

Thankfully, any feedback I have received from the snippets I have shared have been very promising. This was what the publishing person sent me after she looked over the first five pages.

In terms of literature to read, I’ve grown really fond of reading comedies and I was hoping some of you guys could point me in a direction where I could get some good ones. George Carlin’s books are mostly retreads of his stand-up routines which I have on CD and am catching up with on Netflix. There was one book from Tim Allen I really liked as a kid called “I’m Not Really Here,” and I found a Sinbad book with a similar premise at the library book sale. Haven’t checked that one out yet, but I have a feeling I’ll have plenty of time for that when I’m flying to EVO.

Read any Christopher Moore? I’ve mentioned him in the thread a couple of times. He’s my favorite comedic author. I don’t know if that’s what you’re looking for or not. I’d suggest Fool

Good choice, Dracula is one hell of a badass.

About to start through Dubliners myself. Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man didn’t work out but hopefully things will be different this time.

Holy crap a 75 issue comic? Too expensive :frowning:

I want to try getting into H.P Lovecrafts Cthulu stuff. What book should I get? There is a shit ton.

If you’re shelling out your novel, get an agent.

I’m reading Exterminate All the Brutes right now. It’s not fiction I know, but I’m not reading any right now. This book is pissing me off a bit.

Dude, that’s fucking awesome! I hope to finish my novel and my novella sometime next year. Check out the novella, it’s serialized on my blog in my sig. Currently, in part 5 of about 15 or so.

Good luck in your publishing and KEEP WRITING!
