Right now I’m running Chun/Xiaoyu and I’m not sure if I like it or not. Meter isn’t an issue with this team and they can do okay damage. I’m just concerned because they both have weaknesses that the other doesn’t really address. Chun’s ex spinning bird kick on wakeup and her anti-airs are situational and so she is subject to a good pressure game. Xiao doesn’t have any strong wakeup options that I know of and also lacks a good consistent anti-air. I know that this game weakened anti-airs in general, but if you fight a Rufus or something then this team will have a hard time because he controls air space and applies pressure. On the positive side, Chun can tag in Xiao at close range so Xiao doesn’t have to deal with closing the space between her opponent. And by that time Xiao will have meter so you can connect her far st. mp into st. hp into ex. fortune cookie and then a combo.
Some of you were looking at Xiaoyu/Asuka right? Here’s an eight hour stream from the Comboratory that has that exact team being played at around 19 minutes. I see how it could work, but that tag in combo Asuka does… I think it works for anyone tagging her in. I’ve used the same combo with Juri as my partner, but if that’s the case then it will just mean more practice to get it down pact.

I run her with Asuka as well.
So what makes you all decide to run Asuka with Xiao? What are the benefits and downfalls to this team.
Hmm… personally, I just like Xiao and Asuka. This team may have troubles against a good Rufus player, but I think Xiao can keep him out decently. It’s just that if I mess up once and he gets in, I’m screwed.
Benefits are that I can play a solid poking game and fight against fireball zoners with Xiao and get Asuka in easily for a decent set-up that can potentially bring one opponent’s character’s life to about 30% or lower. Downfalls so far are that if I lose momentum, it’s hard for Asuka to get back in and I would want to tag Xiao back in.
EDIT: I can do 436 dmg off an anti-air with Xiaoyu with 1 bar. =)
I feel like people are just pairing up their favorite characters, lol. Ibuki and Asuka sound like pretty bold picks for a Xiao team, I mean damn.
I’m running Kaz on point with Xiao as tag, but maybe I’ll try option’s method of her on point. I’m just terrible at AAin with Xiao so I’m restricting myself to training mode for now. Like if you misjudge a cr.hk or don’t AOP fast enough, the round is basically over.
I was using chun and xiao, but i kept trying to play chun like this was 3s so now im using king instead. King and xiao. My fav tekken chars anyway
King huh? Maybe we should discuss this more over PMs? My concern about that team is that wakeup options are limited.
I use Chun and Xiao as well, and what people have to realize is that no team will cover all bases, seeing as no 2 characters can cover everything the game has to offer, or those characters will be considered broken. The best thing you can do is focus on having weaknesses against characters who aren’t used much (sadly in my case, Rufus is somewhat popular).
The reason behind my Chun Ling team (besides the fact that they are my favorite females in each respective game) is that I think Xiaoyu has a really difficult time getting in, but once she does, she can apply decent pressure. Chun on the other hand doesn’t need to win and can rely heavily on pokes as her SF4 incarnation did, however, pokes in SFxT are much deadlier as they can lead to big damage combos. As Tajiloh said, this team can build meter like it is nothing because all of their simple combos involve many hits. Sadly, this team is very subject to damage scaling, and considering they don’t have a high damage output from the start, health in general is their weakness (they don’t deal it well, they don’t take it well). Pairing these 2 with a meter building gem will net you 3 bars usually before the first round hits 30 seconds left (depends on which ones you use).
Another good partner I’ve been seeing for Xiaoyu is actually Hugo lol simply because he can counter her low HP, and he has really simple, high damaging tag in combos, but I’m not into using males or brute strength to win, so I’ll stick with my Chun.
I’ll also list the pros and cons of Chun Ling Xiaoyu:
Pros
- great meter building
- can deal long combos which can be linked easily with pokes
- can counter projectiles quite well considering Chun can zone, and Xiaoyu can duck
- decent mixups on both halves, with moves that can easily tag cancel
Cons
- low HP
- low damage output
- very subject to damage scaling
- Rufus <_<
I did more testing with Kuma. Apparently, he’s the one who gets mauled by divekicks. His anti-airs are pretty bad and can’t keep up with fast paced jump-ins and divekicks. Back to the drawing board.
im currently using nina /xaio i plan on switching to lili though
im addicted to nina’s damage though
Then why switch to Lili?
Does every SSF4 Ibuki main use Xiaoyu…? Iunno, it seems like it. I wasn’t active at all in the forums for sf4, but I mained Ibuki and tried her as well in this game. I couldn’t use her well at all in 3S so, I didn’t like her much for this game. I also use Xiaoyu/Asuka with Xiaoyu on point, from what I’m seeing Asuka doesn’t really require any meter at all to do decent damage, easy BnB from her j.hp easily does 400+, as well a little bit more health to use as an anchor. I find Lili to do pretty well with Xiaoyu as well, tagging in at her Rain Dance

followed by something along the lines of :hp:, :dp: :lk:, :dp: :lk:, cr.:hp: xx :qcf: :lk:. I don’t know how viable the teams would be, but the downside to Xiaoyu/Lili is all the meter usage. :x Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on any of the little bit I posted, I’d appreciate it.
fun reasons:oops:
Xiaoyu/Hugo for me
Well this actually put some understanding behind the team, which is what I think were all here to talk about. I’ve been playing with Xiaoyu/Asuka today and you’re right; Asuka doesn’t really need meter to do big damage. Her only problem is getting in, but I’ve started to notice that it’s not really a problem anymore because when I was online, people come to you. Asuka really just has to stay on the defensive until her opponent is in her face, then she can wreck their face in and make them remember that beating! I’m starting to like Asuka a little bit more now, btu I really need to learn Xiaoyu! Ugh!! Why’s it so frustrating!
I agree with the getting in part with Asuka, I forgot to add that in as well, but everyone else did so I figured it was sorta implied. D: I used to play DoA4 competitively, so the counter deal with Asuka reminds me a ton of that, which is probably my favorite thing about her honestly. I tend to use a lot of meter with Xiaoyu, I really like her :qcf: :k: :k: for mixups and what not. That being said, I really prefer Asuka over Lili hence the not needing meter for good damage. Against some of the crazy rushdown type of players, I like to do a few jabs on block, since I don’t think Asuka has any good block strings, I’m not sure how safe her :hcb: :p:, or :hcb: :k: is on block. Then :qcf: :k: usually works most of the time depending on their playstyle.
Is it just me, or does it seem like Xiaoyu is only used with females for the most part lol? In this thread, she has been paired with Ibuki, Poison, Chun, Lili, Asuka, Nina, Julia, King, Vega…
Also, the only thing about Asuka/Xiaoyu is that they will have a problem with projectile spammers. Don’t get me wrong, I know Xiaoyu can duck them and Asuka has a way around them as well, but spammer who aren’t willing to go to you will just wait it out since there really isn’t anything on the line for them that they have to fear. Also, people will really good and fast pokes and zoners can keep that team at bay. However, every team has weaknesses so don’t expect a perfect team lol xP I’m just putting this here as food for though as I was also thinking of pairing the two Tekken females together…
Lol you guys must have a thing for asian chicks. I’ve been running her with Raven. High damage tag cancels and I feel like Raven can cover more ranges better. She has strong options for setting up safe tags and tag in mixups which I like. The problem I see with something like an Asuka/Xiao team is that they both have a harder time getting in without meter and get bopped by grapplers
Well, don’t forget that just hitting K in Rain Dance reflects projectiles, and if they shoot another one, you recover faster than they do so you can reflect it again with just K since you’re already still in RD. Of course, it usually only takes one reflected projectile for them to stop spamming them at me and start coming, lol.
I agree that fast pokes do give Xiao some trouble for me. I’ve had some success poking with cr.MK xx RD xx P xx the rest of the combo, but many times I just get punched when I try to do things close range.
