The Leonhart Guide to Better Netplay

OK folks, this not only applies to KOF XII but ALL games online.

I’m drunk but this thread will be expanded greatly after I sober up in the morning with a full FAQ on what you can do to cut down on and if not eliminate any and all lag on both XB 360 and PS3.

For now please visit these 2 links…

www.pingtest.net

For car guys, Speedtest is to measure your connection’s Horsepower - Ping test is to measure your connection’s Torque

Run 3 tests on each, post up the test that came up in the middle

To post up each test has an option for “Forum Link”, again post up the one in the middle also please post up your your location, ISP and how much bandwidth you’re paying for and your setup…I’ll post up an example below.

And post up an honest view on the connection levels…

Here is mine.

Houston, TX (Greenspoint)
Comcast, 6MB
Wired Straight to the router w/ Cat 5e

Ping = http://www.pingtest.net/result/2102661.png

For me Red is a toss up, good or bad
Yellow is playable
I heard blue is flawless, I have yet to see it for myself.

See, easy hunh? - Just follow my guide and I promise KOF XII can also be more playable for you as well. :encore:

COMMON SENSE / BASICS
Before I go on, DO NOT HAVE ANY TORRENTS OR STREAMS GOING WHILE YOU PLAY!!!

The best damned connection bar none, wired straight to the modem - at that point it’s the money you’re shelling out on your connection that has the say so in your lag (on your end at least)

There is packet loss on wireless, face it. - Man up and put a fucking cord on the floor.

IMO DSL doesn’t cut it (we’ll save that debate for later) better call your local Cable or Fiber Provider… IMO the only way DSL is gonna cut it is if you opt for the 6MB Package and you live a few blocks from the hub.

Streaming takes up bandwidth, plain and simple - DO NOT HAVE ANY TORRENTS OR STREAMS GOING WHILE YOU PLAY!!!

INSTALL YOUR FUCKING GAME TO THE SYSTEM, Less work for the machine = More time devoted to getting data in and out on the connection… Every little bit helps.

Fighting games are bandwidth needy, you wanna play a fighting game you need to let all the other shit go - 'specialy this one.

And remember, DO NOT HAVE ANY TORRENTS OR STREAMS GOING WHILE YOU PLAY!!!

PORT FORWARDING
X-Box 360 needs the following ports opened.
UDP
53
88
3074

TCP
53
80
3074

PS3 Needs…
TCP
80
443
5223

UDP
3478
3479
3658 (voice chat)

If you’re confused, google.com -> “Port Forwarding”

OPEN YOUR NAT
Step 1: Get your Xbox 360’s IP address from the system blade and choose network settings. Then edit settings should show your Xbox’s IP.

Step 2: Go into your routers configuration window thru Internet Explorer. In the address bar type in your routers IP address. It should be default at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1. When you’re prompted for a password you have found it =P. If you haven’t changed it the username and password should both be admin, and admin.

Step 3: USING DMZ When you enter into your router config window, you need to find the Tab DMZ, it should be under applications and gaming if you are using Linksys. Once you find the DMZ tab, click enable and type in the last digits of your XBOX into the box below. Yes when you do this you are opening all the ports on your Xbox, which is insecure, but show me someone that has hacked into an xbox 360?

MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR FUCKING SETTINGS!!!

Step 4:Using Port Fowarding After you have enabled DMZ, find the Port Fowarding tab, should be under advanced routing. For the name type in XBL or whatever you want, and for port range put 87 to 89, choose UDP, then your XBOX last digits, and enable. Then do 3073 to 3075 choose TCP, then your XBOX last digits, and enable. Then again do 3073 to 3075 choose UDP, then your XBOX last digits, and enable.

MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR FUCKING SETTINGS!!!

Step 5:Using UPnP This is just incase. Go into UPnP fowarding and enter in the same stuff you did for Step 4.

MAKE SURE YOU SAVE YOUR FUCKING SETTINGS!!!

Step 6: Now logout of your router config. Unplug your router and modem from the power, then plug in the router 1st, wait 30 seconds. Then plug in the modem and wait at least 2 minutes. If you don’t do these hard restarts it might not work!

Step 7: Restart your Xbox and go to the system blade, choose network settings, then test connection. This may take a bit, but when it gets down to NAT type it should say OPEN. If not, sorry. You can just undo all the settings we changed, you can just uncheck enabled on the port fowarding. or if you want to restore your router to the factory defaults just push the reset button on the back of it.

And there you have it folks, it works for me and all my homeboys here in Houston and it can work for you.

Red tends to be laggy, but once or twice I get decent quality.
Yellow tends to have minimal lag, yet playable.
Have yet to see a blue.

Haven’t done red, but yellow is very passable, I’ve yet to try on a blue connection.

Done, updated on the first post.

Can this get a sticky please?

That had to be the angriest tutorial ever… I’ll do it later. ;-;

You’re too brutal.

Torrents and streams use bandwidth, not much bandwidth is needed for a fighting game. I have a 4MB connection and while my bro is on Youtube or my torrents are active, I can still play online perfectly, because I have the required amount of bandwidth needed to play online.

I agree, wireless connections drop packets and then there’s interference. But it’s not all that different from a wired. My router adds about 3ms of delay to the main connection.

Whether DSL or cable, ping matters.

And for KOFXII, disable chat, etc for a better experience.

PING IS KING

I find that it can differ.
At my house on GGPO, Koreans on average are almost 1000 ping on wireless.
However when I go to a friend’s who is no more than a Kilometer away, the average on his Laptop on wireless to Koreans is 250.

He has a different Router, ports are forwarded the same, I have an external USB Wireless while he has built-in Wireless on his Laptop.

well yes it is the angriest tutorial ever and i loved it but I’ll practice these techniques after completing my work for 642-533, 000-973 and 642-383.

Bump cause this is one of the most useful threads on all of SRK.

Don’t you mean ANGRIEST threads?

If you have the PS3 IP on DMZ in your router do you still need to open ports?

You KOF players and your secrets

Sticky!!!

Like the original poster said. Its the most useful thread in all of srk!!!

Why the hell is this just in the KOF section???

Good shit!

where did you find those port numbers? I looked for those forever. Very cool, thanks.

You don’t need to port forward if you use DMZ, it basically means all ports have direct access. All I do is assign a DMZ IP, and then do a custom network setup for both my 360 and and PS3, and assign that IP. (not a conflict since I can only use one console at a time). In my case it’s xxx.xxx.xxx.321. This changed my NAT type from “strict” to “open” in MW2 and improves networking in SF too.

DMZ’ing is a bit extreme for most people.

Where does it say your NAT type when you attempt to test your Xbox Live connection? It has small icons on the bottom listed as “Xbox 360 -> Network -> Internet -> Xbox Live”, but at the end of the test, it just notes: “Xbox LIVE is up and running.”

Ok excuse me if I am an idiot to this sort of thing. I am having a few problems with the guide. My first one is that the guide should be updated to apply to the new XBOX 360 menu. The other is when your talking about inputting the last digits of your XBOX, it should be more specific because I am still not sure what to put in. Is it the last three of the serial number? And the last problem I can think of is port forwarding. I have no idea how to port forward and I am using a Belkin router. There is no Port tab for the Belkin set up so I do not know where to begin or what to put in where. This thread is awesome, but I am pretty much a noob when it comes to these kinds of things. I really want to find out how to set up my XBOX for better net play. So if someone could help me out, that would be great.

leave this thread unstickied on the kof section. that way nobody but kof players will ever know this dirty secret.

also your giving an explenation on the xb360 with that nat shit. isnt there one for the ps3? or is port forwarding enough for the ps3?
