The Legend of Zelda thread - Ganon's bodyshop will be open for business on Nov. 20th

He’s simply asking for a deeper, more involved and cohesive narrative. One that isn’t a paper thin excuse for “Point A to Point B.”

oh yeah I got that, but zelda isnt about external concept, it’s about absorbing your own concepts from the environment giving you the tools to manifest your own understanding/story from it all, this is something that a well respected game called Demon Souls was trying to do

which is slightly more deeper than a knocked up story by some guy whos probably more concerned with applying his amazing innovative story to something that’s aimed at adults, and if not then to teens or kids or whatever. wow so many problems with adding full on literature where its not needed…!

hope I don’t sound rude but im just trying to put my thoughts across

The problem is that Zelda doesn’t do this very well either. You just end up with a bunch of unanswered shit. They present ideas and concepts in the narrative and then do absolutely nothing with them. It’s lazy, empty and hallow.

Unfortunately Zelda hardly does that at least nowadays. The absorption of concepts from the environment was done far better in Shadow of the Colossus, which IMHO had a better narrative than many quality games with pages of dialogue. Not only that, it’s environment spoke far louder concepts and story than Twilight Princess which felt more like stages than an environment.

It’s interesting you brought up Demon Souls because the praise I heard from it was more from it’s gameplay concepts than it’s storytelling one. I don’t have an opinion on Demon Soul’s storytelling since I haven’t played it yet, but if you want to draw comparisons, then imagine this. If Demon’s Soul’s praise is about it’s gameplay, but the criticisms of Zelda is about it’s storytelling then what does that say about the series? It says that while we might be accustomed to the quality of gameplay in the Zelda series (to a point where we take it for granted) that the reoccurring criticism comes from it’s storytelling, something that shouldn’t be ignored.

Not needed? How about a basic requirement for a quality product? Look at Pixar. Look at Tartakovsky, Look at Grant Morrison. Look at Neil Gaiman. Look at all the creative individuals and companies that created storylines that don’t have to appeal to adults, children or a demographic, but to all people on a level that isn’t pandering.

You think there are many problems that arise when writing a good story? How about the problems about writing a poor one that relies on a crutch to carry the game? I don’t want innovation, I don’t want grittiness or hardboiled. I want storytelling that doesn’t feel like a list of tasks to complete.

OC

what did everyone think of twilight princess i for one thought it was one of the worst of the series and one of my friends who never played a zelda before thought it was shitty

Zelda fans are never happy…

I liked the slightly more developed story and Midna is my absolute favorite “helper” in the series (you listening, Navi?), but other than that it ranks pretty low on my scale.

Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, A Link to the Past, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Link’s Awakening, etc. were all better. I liked TP more than the original, Adventures of Link and the DS games though.

i am very satisfied with all the games except twilight princess i thought it wasn’t as good as the other ones i just recently got my friend who had never played a zelda game hooked with ocarina he had been playing it non stop and beat it. immediately after he started majoras mask

I didn’t like it much either.

First off, the world felt dead. It was a vast world to travel with nothing in it except for a few places. You could ride around for awhile without seeing anything or anyone. In some games, this wouldn’t be much of a problem, but in Twilight this feeling was heightened *because of *the towns that were present. When you first visit a town, well one that actually has people in it, you can only interact with some of the residents. I remember when I first walked into Hyrule Castle town and tried to talk to some of the people walking around. Nothing happened. You couldn’t talk to them. This isolation created a disconnect in the game for me where I didn’t care what happened to the people of this world. It was at this point that the game strictly became a point A to point B affair.

Now my favorite game, Majora’s Mask, did an excellent job creating a vibrant world with people in it that I cared about. You got to know each individual and help out most of the people in the game, some of which in very meaningful ways. You could cure a father of his curse and reunite him with his daughter that was watching over him. You could bring two lovers back together. On the lighter side, you could play games with the kids in town.

That said, I’m not expecting every Zelda to have most of the world’s people interactive to this degree. However, I do think it would help the game to have more of these kinds of side-quests to bring you closer to the world. At least let us TALK to everyone, even if it’s only a few content sensitive lines (i.e. when nothing seems wrong it’s one line and when it looks like the world is ending, another line).

Another problem was, sadly, the gameplay. The dungeon items, moreso than past games, were strictly a one dungeon item. This made most of the tools I got seem completely worthless. They need to do a better job of integrating the weapons you receive so that you use them outside of the dungeon and/or use them in multiple dungeons.

I realize other Zelda games had the same problem, but I think it is worst in Twilight. Thinking back on Link to the Past, you got a hammer in a dungeon. Naturally it’s helpful inside the dungeon, but outside it’s own dungeon it’s useful for opening up more of the world and it is used in some other dungeons from time to time. To look at another game, look at Ocarina. Pretty much all of those items are helpful outside of their respective dungeon and are used in other dungeons as well.

There are other things I don’t like about Twilight, but I’ll end here with this wall of text.

I’m probably the only one who probably enjoyed Twilight Princess. The only couple of major issues I had with the game was the beginning was a bit slower than usual for a Zelda game but it was there to help establish who Link was before the shit hit the fan and make you care more about the people in the village. Second thing was the game being a bit too easy on the combat side especially the boss battles which all mostly winded down to 3 reps of attacks and then you were done.

I can understand the complaint about the overworld feeling barren but in general most Zelda overworld’s have been like the besides enemies. If there is a person out in the field then he/she is uasually there for a specific reason. I’m not really surprised that nobody is out there chillin all day either.

I liked Twilight Princess too. I never understood why people disliked it. I thought it was a fun game, though I will agree it started off a but slow.

was expecting remixed music,…also they need to incorporate a brand new dungeon or something, boss attack is bleh

nah man keep it original don’t change what doesn’t need to be fixed maybe a new side quest but thats it

edit: also since the announcement of the new nintendo console i wonder is skyward sword still gonna be on the wii?

I wasnt a big fan of the Wolf Form in Twilight Princess ESPECIALLLY since I just had played through Okami right before.

Wow, at first I was thinking they look the same but after seeing the fields, sky and the entrance to Kakariko Village it looks like they definitely put some effort into making it look good. Here’s to hoping this is the standard that we see in the final game!

I liked Twilight Princess as well, I haven’t really met people who didn’t like it. To be honest, I don’t remember having any gripes with it anyway since I only played through it once.

I also like Twilight Princess. It’s not perfect but it’s a good game. That games kind of funny. It does a number of things I’ve wanted the Zelda series to do for a long time and yet fumbles on some things Zeldas been doing right for years. I still like it tho. I’m looking forward to Skyward Sword. It looks cool and the art style really reminds me of ALTTP.

I like to imagine that Okami is the real TP. That game took the torch and ran away with it.

Damn that’s really cool. I cannot wait. It’s been years since I’ve played OoT.
