@crotchpuncha Said everything I wanted to say about those who judge prematurely. Sure a person has the right to have an opinion on something they haven’t experienced fully however, that person’s opinion by definition isn’t informed nor born from an open mind so it will be much less credible than someone else who at least waited to experience the thing fully before making up his/her mind. The same exact logic @specs and @Smashbro29 use towards games are used by racists to justify their racism.
Anyways I just saw the egoraptor video today so let me preface my thoughts:
Fact: I haven’t played Skyward Sword or A Link Between Worlds
Fact: The defining characteristic of any Zelda game is the seamless Coen bros-esque genre mixing of action, platforming, puzzle, adventure, and have the feel of an RPG since you grow stronger the further you get. Although none of the games are technically RPGs besides The Adventure of Link.
As someone who loves. ALttP and OoT equally, I agree with most of egoraptor’s praises of the former and criticisms of the latter. That being said how the fuck can you criticize opening treasure chests in OoT taking too long :wtf: Are you fucking serious? That is just a really shitty complaint only those suffering from severe ADHD should complain about. Every single Zelda game emphasizes creating a sense of wonder and growth for the player through Link’s discovery of both new items and environments, so it’s only logical for them to make a big deal about the contents of treasure chests. Also why the fuck is he bashing OoT for putting more of an emphasis on plot than ALttP? Just because the dialogue didn’t give him as a player any added motivation, context, or world building that doesn’t mean it devalues the game design for everyone else, he is applying his subjecrive opinion as an objective benchmark the game must live up to. If he was right about OoT’s dialogue “devaluing the game design” then it wouldn’t be possible for me or any other gamer to love it and think it’s integral to the overall experience. OoT’s plot is the most common one in gaming: Bad guy tries to take over world, and you have to stop him…well I guess with the added twist that the bad guy is successful and you have to reverse the damage he’s already done, but still very bare bones plot. That being said, IMO OoT is one of the best “bad guy tries to take over world” plots in gaming, it may not be subtle or complex, but it doesn’t need to be nor should it be. It’s written well enough to give me a sense of scale and make me understand exactly how Ganondorf’s evil has corrupted the land and its people, reminding me why I am doing what I’m doing without being annoying or too in your face…okay with th exception of Navi.
As far as puzzles, world building, and wouls else im happy with the franchise, never really had any complaints there, my main concern with The Legend of Zelda franchise has always been combat and in that respect I completely agree with egoraptor. I’m not expecting any future Zelda to have Dark Souls like combat (a man can dream), but I don’t think anyone could deny that future Zelda’s would benefit from taking some inspiration from that series combat. I’ve never comp, aimed about combat in Zelda being too easy because its still fun, but after so many Zelda games, I think it’s well past due to at least slightly evolve the combat, make it at least 1% harder please.
It’s almost as if Aonuma knew egoraptor would make this video because he said Zelda Wii U will be an open world like the first one. Letting you travel anywhere at anytime and the puzzles being in figuring out how to get where you choose to go is simultaneously honoring the first Zelda while adding a modern twist so while we don’t know anything about the game so far, if it stays true to this design egoraptor should love it and so will I.
