At times? Yatzee admits to shamelessly exaggerating and shitting on products he likes because it nets him views. If you’re using him as a review source you’re honestly doing it wrong.
Am I really doing it wrong? I like his style. Give me a good/better person who doesn’t review using numbers and they rate a product based on the target audience it’s intended for.
this vid sums it up well why I like him
You know Yatzee’s reviews are for entertainment purposes, right? It’s not designed to help you make an informed decision.
Super Bunny Hop comes to mind.
No sensationalism, no stupid gimmick. Just his impressions on the product and an explanation for them. Informative.
This isn’t to say I don’t enjoy Yatzee he’s quaite entertaining, but for the most part he’s not terribly informative most of the time as his shtick is to be overly critical.
Did I ever say I use him or any critic to choose a game? No I didn’t. I said I choose a game based on what I like. I don’t get what is hard to understand about what I said. I don’t use anyone who reviews on a professional level to make choices and at most I use reg people reviews that are well written.
Honestly, I refer to SRK discussions for reviews about games I’m interested in getting and for intel on good games I haven’t considered. Hence why Shinobi is high on my radar, as well as Volgarr if it comes to 3DS. That said, if I get excited for a game I’ll usually grab it despite the reviews. But it’s nice to know that the new Zelda is generally held in high regards.
jim sterlin is better than yatzee
I usually pay attention to reviewers when I’ve watched their other reviews on games I’ve played and agree with them. I figure if I kind of match their gaming taste, when they describe a game they like, I’d probably like it as well.
Oh and I was looking for more pre-order bonuses and it appears that Best Buy offers a free code for Oracle of Ages if you pre-order. Gamestop offers Oracle of Seasons.
Edit: eShop will be having discounts on Zelda 1 ($3.50), 2 ($3.50), and Link’s Awakening ($4). I will definitely be picking up Awakening. Loved that game. I’ll probably go with the Best Buy pre order too for Oracle of Ages. So much Zelda goodness.
I’m planning on preordering ALBW tomorrow. If I get a free Oracle code, I might give it away as I already own both games.
So yeah if you haven’t read up on the Iwata Asks for ALBW you should

2 days left! I got a chance to put my hands on the game and it looks great. Can’t wait for it.
Nintendo is really interfering with my life this weekend. I had to preorder both ALBW and SM3DW and I’m getting them Friday right after work. There’s a conflict of interest here and I’m not sure which game I’m supposed to play without feeling guilty about leaving the other one left out. I had a similar conundrum when I got Final Fantasy III (VI) and Chrono Trigger for SNES on the same Christmas morning years ago.
Nintendo, why you messing with my LIFE?
Found a youtube vid with the complete Link Between Worlds OST: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvrVC9t33aM
The download link for the OST in the vid description works too. A handful of tracks do have some soundfxs in them.
Will have to jump on that…love the soundtrack for ALBW. Love the game period actually and can’t wait to see what Nintendo’s plan for the Wii U game is since ALBW is a taste.
Love the fact that the Milk Bar bard plays Ballad of the Goddess as one of his tunes.
Also apparently if you play Lorule Castle’s theme backwards you’ll get part of Hyrule Castle’s theme
To fully hear it go to 3:05 in this vid
So what say you guys? What do you love and what are your complaints so far for this game?
Someone also put up the the timeline using gifs with ALBW placed within it
Beat the game awhile ago, but was too lazy/busy to post anything. I’m going to breeze through the positives and focus on my criticisms.
Overall: It was a solid game and it’s a step in the right direction. However, it could have taken things much further and kept the sense of exploration.
Love:
- Having access to all of the items up front was a refreshing experience. The price was just right for both renting and purchasing items. Additionally, the rent system made death in the game something to be worried about because you’d lose all of your rented items. Furthermore, the rent system opened up the game world and allowed for my next point.
- Being able to tackle the dungeons in any order was a nice touch and added to the experience of being an adventurer.
- 3D effects were well done and played well in the few dungeons where it was featured.
- Spotpass integration was interesting, though the shadow links are a pushover.
- 2D movement between walls was a great mechanic. I enjoyed the times when you’d be stumped, then remember you have this new ability.
Complaints:
- To me, the game didn’t have any sense of exploration. Right from the start you had a complete map of both the overworld and dungeons. While I’m sure this was done to help novice players, adding this feature detracts from the core Zelda experience. One of the aspects I loved about past games was not knowing what the overworld would look like and trying to find new routes around the map. True, this game builds from aLttP, yet they could have easily added more new areas or played with our expectations of the map. Plus, newcomers would not have had this prior knowledge anyway.
Then, in the dungeons, they, well, felt like a dungeon in past games. It was an undiscovered, forgotten area I’d have to go through in order to find the item and kill the boss. I would go in not knowing what I’d encounter or where the secret rooms might be located. Instead, everything is laid out in ALBW. You know you’ll have to go through basically every room. So when you’re stuck, simply go to the room you haven’t been. There’s no discovery, it’s process of elimination.

Item system was great, but they could have taken it further. The dungeons should have worked in tandem with this new system to incorporate multiple items. This is especially the case considering that renting multiple items at once was incredibly easy given the huge amount of rupees. Just think about a dungeon where you’d have to use almost all of the items you’ve rented. They could have developed some truly ingenious puzzles rather than sticking to the Zelda convention of one main item per dungeon.
-
3D felt under utilized in puzzle and dungeon design. I loved the tower dungeon early in the game which played up the 3D effect. However, other than that, what I remember most about the 3D oriented puzzles/dungeons where times when you’d have to jump up or down from platform to platform. That felt like a lazy choice.
-
Bosses were pretty bad and uninspired. About half of them felt like rehashes of past bosses. Additionally, they didn’t incorporate either the 2D effect or the ability of have multiple items into most of the bosses. The one boss I did enjoy was Stalbind because it utilized the 2D effect in a fun way. Yes, the Knucklemaster also forced you to use 2D, but it retained the simplistic dodge enemy to have them run into wall and attack.
-
Lastly, I wish we had a game with a set of mostly new items with only 2-3 old items. It would be interesting to see what they develop.
Neutral:
- Ease of difficulty. This game was incredibly easy. However, Zelda games in general are easy, so this doesn’t affect me too much. I did like an actual threat to dying. That said I never died in this game, though I came close once or twice.
Whoever has the eyeball fetish in the design team needs to quit that shit and come up with something new once in a while.
Jgreen put it best
I agree with the dungeons not having multiple solutions as a result of all items being available from the start. That’s something I hope is implemented in Zelda U. Dungeons should be designed like Metroid levels in that some parts of the dungeon are blocked off unless you brought the right item with you. But those blocked off areas shouldn’t prevent you from completing the dungeon, because there would be another path you could take.
Already posted in the 3DS thread but
ALBW-second favorite Zelda game.
I actually like easier zelda games…but yes, having the entire map and at the start of the dungeon was a bit much.
Sooo…Hyrule Warriors
So far I’m seeing a lot of mixed feelings on this. Some are saying it’s awesome and then there’s some who are going so far as to say it tarnishes the IP and it’s as bad as the Zelda CDI games.
