I’ve noticed lynels all have their own individual personality. a just fought another white maned lynel and it opted for a more defensive route, by shooting fire as much as possible and avoiding using the sword it has. it seems lynels may adapt to you after you start killing them
regarding the timeline, i don’t think botw fits nicely anywhere. there’s gonna be a huge shift in the timeline but at the same time, its an afterthought for Nintendo. timeline theorists are probably the biggest influence on the actual story because Nintendo is really only focused on the gameplay its self. I wouldn’t be surprised if they saw a bunch of evidence saying x comes before y and were like “oh… yeah that does make sense. put it in Hyrule historia”
I got my Switch a few days ago. So far my main take-aways were:
I like that combat is more challenging and I’d died more in the first hour than I’d done in all other Zelda games combined since Ocarina of Time Master Quest. However, with that said, it does feel kind of shitty when a random bokoblin with a nice sword just one-shots you. It would’ve been nice if the balance came more from how difficult enemies are to fight rather than taking absurd damage from random hits. I assume this issue will be lessened when I get more Great Fairy upgrades and heart containers, but it’s kind of frustrating when a fight isn’t really hard as much as it just forces a perfect run on you. Then again, I will admit part of the problem may be my stubborn refusal to leave and come back with better gear and stats. Overall an improvement to a series that’s been bereft of challenge for a long time, though.
The game looks really good. Not necessarily from a technical standpoint, but the art design is great.
The writing is surprisingly good. I ran into a lady who was really particular about the flowers surrounding a shrine. At first I just got annoyed about the added hassle of not being allowed to step on a single flower. But when leaving the shrine, I decided “fuck it, I’m going to intentionally step on the flowers because it’s just going to teleport me outside anyway, so it saves time”. Without spoiling anything, if you haven’t done so, piss the flower lady off by stepping on the flowers intentionally over and over. It’s maybe not worth intentionally going back if you’ve already completed the shrine, but it was a nice little moment for a random challenge that could’ve just used the same canned lines and animations. And that’s just everywhere in the game with random NPCs when you take their shit or do something they’re scripted to react to.
I love the weapon selection and how much it actually affects how you approach a fight as compared to the standard “swing your Master Sword” approach.
This game fucks with me. I’m the kind of guy who’d rather save his items and repeat a difficult fight than spend them and progress, because I might need them later. For example, I finished FFVII without ever having used a single megalixir, even in the final fight or some of the bonus boss fights. So I’m currently sitting on a fuckton of pristine Guardian weapons because my brain won’t let me fight using anything but disposable boko clubs/spears/arms. Not to mention the two full pages of 7+ heart recovery meals I refuse to use because I only have six hearts.
I realize how little of a fuck I give about the Zelda staples. People who absolutely have to have Epona just baffle me. Like, it’s a random brown horse with no personality. Those are already in the game. Just name it Epona and be done with it. To me, Zelda was more interesting when it broke the conventions and introduced new shit. Like Wind Waker not having Zora, Goron, horses, or whatnot. I think that was my problem with Twilight Princess. It was such a hard Ocarina of Time 2.0 down to the races having virtually the same problems you needed to solve.
My only real complaints are with the controls. Namely, Z targetting has a tendency to freak the fuck out at times and quick switching bows and arrows is virtually useless since usually I’d want to swap because my bow broke, but I can’t. Well, that and the frame rate issues, though I only seem to notice those when I’m playing on my TV.
The Zora prince is the best. Seriously, I want some Shovel Knight-style DLC where you play as that guy having cool underwater dudebro adventures and banging hot mermaid chicks. That guy is the man.
What problem are you having with quick swapping your bow after it breaks? You have to hold down on R while using the d-pad for it to bring up the quick bow options.
I just go into the “I have no bow” animation, same as when you press X(?) if you have no weapon in your hand and the mnu won’t pop up. It works fine if I have a bow, though. I guess I’ll have to experiment more, but I couldn’t get it to work earlier. It’s not a big issue, it’s just sort of annoying to have to go into the menu to swap. Assuming I’m not the one fucking it up, that is.
I was under the impression that this game could possibly be the last in the timeline, considering how Ganon has degraded from Gerudo to Pig Demon to just a swirling mass of hatred and malice, no mention of the Triforce, all the races in one game (minus the Piccori, but there’s a reason for that), and “10,000 years ago”…
But whatever, timeline theories aren’t my thing anyway.
Oh another reason for it to be the last- all the name reference to past characters and games, and the first memory, where Zelda is anointing Link, and in her speech says, “Whether Skyward bound, adrift in Time, steeped in Twilight, or sailing on the Winds…”
One thing I think we can all agree on is that this Link is the most gangsta, and gets more bitches than the others.
I haven’t gotten to experience any of this game, but I’m also the dumb ass who keeps going into a thread for a game I do not own so I don’t feel I have the right to complain about it.
You say that like you’re in here posting 10 times a day asking Qs and NO ONE is hiding posts. game has also been out for nearly 2 weeks. SPOILER - Ganon is in it.
Need to find out where this red dragon lives…tried chasing him down on foot and I looked away for a second and he vanished into the sky. Probably gonna have to backtrack and retrace where it came from…need this scale! OOO A SHRINE!
Anyway…behavioral AI stuff from messing with around with Lynels
[details=Spoiler]. Probably nothing really useful in terms of battling but I just find it interesting how they coded these guys. Lynels will spot you from a pretty far distance away and they’ll casually walk within a certain distance of you and then just stare at you. They won’t challenge they won’t do anything but stare at you. While you are within a certain range of their territory and they know you are there they won’t stop looking at you until you’re a good distance away before they lose interest. The only time the Lynel will do something is when it starts to feel like you might serious about fighting it…usually in the case of walking or moving closer to a certain distance. You’ll know it when it pulls out the bow which is the first thing it will do since you’re not close range. Also If you are anywhere within eye sight of the Lynel and you pull out a weapon it will pull out it’s bow as well (try this out yourself it’s kinda funny cause you’ll pull out your weapon and the Lynel is like ‘Oh we about to do this?’). Lynel still in general won’t fire at you until you take aim at it or get really close…however the Lynel does have a time limit. Once the Lynel has put it self in stand by attack mode you have what I believe to be about 15 seconds to get yourself out of the Lynel’s territory before it decides that you’ve tried it’s patience enough and it starts firing at you, this is signified by a loud roar. The If you’re pretty far away from the Lynel it is completely content with not giving chase and will just fire away at you with the bow. If you’re within eye sight and within range it will fire straight, if you break line of sight and you’re still in range then it will fire the arrows into the sky to rain down on you (can kind of take advantage of this in battles as if there’s small cliff that separates you and the Lynel you can get it to pull out the bow fire shots into the air at close range which leaves it open for a few seconds for close quarters before it pulls out it’s close range weapon). Starting out the Lynel really doesn’t feel like you’re worth its time if you’re not close enough and won’t really leave its territory but after about getting halfway the AI starts having no issue with going into areas it wasn’t it usually doesn’t go to attack you. Experienced this upon trying to use a large cliff to cheese one early on and the Lynel got fed up with my shit and came up the cliff side.
