The Last Scoop of Vanilla: Saying Farewell to the Original MvC3

My view on leaving Vanilla MvC3 behind:

Since the art of character exploration has died amongst fighting game enthusiasts, I believe that we hardly scratched the surface of Vanilla MvC3. This is unfortunately due to publicized tourneys and competitions. Many people simply gave up on characters that did not make an appearance on a winning roster and quickly switched to the ones that were.

I find it disheartening to see that out of the 30+ characters included on the vanilla MvC disk, only about 8 of them really saw extensive play. Tournaments exposed that those characters were more “worthwhile” than the rest of cast and due to the sheep-like mindset of the fighting community, we quickly flocked towards those characters and painfully ignored the rest.

Isn’t it a bit pathetic that it took 7 months to figure out that Shuma-Gorath’s devitalization command grab nullified projectiles? Or figuring out Jill’s hidden tech? Or discovering Arthur’s ability to destroy dark pheonix by simply activating his level 3?

Anyway, as the life of vanilla comes to a close, I feel as if we really only explored about 30% of the entire game. I know this is not entirely our (the fighting game community) faults, But nonetheless I think we are somewhat to blame. Hopefully with Ultimate, people will spend more time exploring the entire cast and not only the tourney makers.

I can’t wait for Ultimate to arrive, but Vanilla probably had a bunch of things that will never see the light of day now.

Your thoughts on leaving Vanilla behind? Happy? Sad? Agree? Disagree? Leave your opinion here.

I fully agree, Mystic. Personally, I see fighting games as an art, and a game like MvC3 is one of the most creative out there. It disheartened me to see much of the cast brushed aside because people were more concerned with winning rather than creating. All it takes to make a character viable is one person taking that character seriously, and even that did not happen.

All that being said, I am happy to be leaving MvC3.0 behind. There were some aspects of the meta-game that needed to be toned down/removed for this game to survive. I look forward to seeing the dramatic change in how the game is played and teams are formed now that the DHC glitch is gone, for example. Overall however, I am glad that we as a community have a fresh start and a clean slate to work with. November 15th can’t come soon enough.

[details=Spoiler]

I’m fine with leaving Vanilla behind. I’m gonna miss all the Vanilla retardo combos but there was too much untested shit that was just thrown into this game that will at least be addressed somewhat in Ultimate. My team is relatively the same if not most likely better and I can’t wait to run the Son of Sparda with Marvel’s Sorcerer and Capcom’s techno ninja.

Yes, i’m glad they will be toning down X-factor. But I do wish that they kept in air-dash blocking, it’s going to be a lot harder to close the distance against some zoning characters now because of this change.

Let me ask you a question: do people use Gouken/Rose/Guy/Dee Jay/etc frequently in AE? Use Cammy and Fei Long frequently in ST? So, why is using top tiers something new?

Just gonna have to wave dash more and call assists at good times. It won’t really affect any air dash characters with teleports like Dante since he can call assist/teleport get in pretty free still. X-23 has a wall jump that moves her across the screen quickly while still being able to block and call assists plus most likely still have the game’s best wave dash. Doom as anchor will probably have a bit more trouble dashing in but they buffed the start up on all his projectiles so he’ll be able to fight the long range wars more easily now.

I feel the same way. We are oblivious right now. I honestly feel that if the meta-game had five more years to develop, we’d realize how great Chun Li and Jill really are (not trolling, I think they have top tier potential), how overrated Wolverine and Phoenix are, and, most importantly, what MODOK does. As a community, we still haven’t figured out what he does. Seriously, I wish some of the sleepers had a chance to develop. Viewtiful Joe, in my opinion, can dominate the match. Is it easy? No. Can he shut down anything you might have just been doing? Yes.

The “Thanks for Playing!” video today really made me sad about this game getting left behind. I mean, it’s always hard to say goodbye to a title you love, but a title that was completely unexplored? I’ve only had MvC3 since mid-July (yes, that late). In the four months between then and UMvC3, I already discovered more combos and gimmicks about the low tiers than most competitive players will ever know. Tron solo relaunch combos, the easy way to OTG with a fully charged Mighty Smash, etc.

While I am eagerly awaiting the new characters, I will really miss vanilla. I know this sounds absurd, but I like fighting games with a little bit of “the bs factor.” It keeps it interesting. I also like to see some characters standing out as above average. The taller they stand, the harder they fall. I lost to Dark Phoenix countless times. But you know what? It was worth it. Because that one time I actually beat her, I felt like a kid in a candy store. The only three things that got on my nerves were TAC’s (And the 4th Lord +'s whose bnb is ABCS BBC TAC BBC TAC BBCS OTG Hyper DHC DHC), X Factor, and the tactics that made the game not even fun to play. Seriously, I’m using Spencer, Wesker, and Doom. Do you have to fly away as Mag-freakin-neto while calling beam assists?

In short, I’m very saddened by the loss of what could have been. What is is rather forgettable, but all the stuff that could have come out of this… I just died a little on the inside.

Okay, I want an explanation for this.

Gone too soon :[

This game will be nearly as BS as Vanilla…don’t worry. The only difference is you won’t die as fast and the easiest to use characters might not actually run the game this time. Might…

I’m going to miss Sentinal assist combos Q_Q. So long Skydance reset shenanigans.

In theory, this could happen. After all, about 1/3 of the cast has developed some anti-Phoenix tech. Characters like She-Hulk and Spiderman can even one-shot her. As for Wolverine, I’m kinda grasping at straws here. Again, looking at the future, Wolverine isn’t actually THAT hard to predict most Wolverines: Derp Kick, LMH xx Berserker Slash xx Berserker Charge, (block) mixup. If we can just learn to block all that, he’s really not so scary. Now, to just hit him…

EDIT - Realized you bolded specifically Dark Phoenix. To clarify, the following characters aren’t necessarily scared of DP: Wolverine, Wesker, Magneto, Amaterasu, She-Hulk, Hulk, Taskmaster, Super Skrull, Storm, Arthur, and Ryu. That’s not to say that these characters are immune to DP. That’s not what I’m saying. They just have some Anti-Phoenix tech, be it a full-screen hyper or a one-shot. Also, if you’re that concerned about her, you can just put Tron on your team, and take advantage of the glitch where she doesn’t transform if hit by Bonne Strike assist. Waste of an assist, but whatever.

Don’t blame me for being doubtful

To much nerfing of the drones. They are a true block string now (they should have been in the first place honestly but I will miss it) so there goes half of there mix-up and they are faster which will take away most drone assisted combos tis a sad day. I hope they make it so assist dont scale with hitstun I had so many creative combos now I have to pick a wall-bounce or ground-bounce assist to do fun stuff? Well they wont change it so whatever

The DHC glitch being gone makes me not sad at all about getting a new version of the game, but I do hope that UMvC3 has (a lot) longer to stew. I’d love to see more character development and I’d like for the community to have the time to appreciate everything in the game, including what we now consider to be bullshit. Let’s face it, there is a ton of horse shit in MvC2, but because we had to live with it, I’d say an overwhelming majority of the community grew to actually embrace it. We can’t get that when things are being changed every year.

Here’s to a fresh start and a long life.

No one version of a game really lasts for a long time anymore until the series cuts off. Guilty Gear basically changed every year until the final version (Accent Core) and the first Guilty Gear X came out like a year after the Dreamcast did. You can’t expect the decade long grind of the same game anymore like the old days. At most a whole year before shit changes up these days.

I’m not so much expecting it as I am yearning for it. And I definitely wouldn’t expect a decade long grinding period (although I wouldn’t mind it) but I’d like to see something a tad more permanent than 9 months.

My wish is to just have 3 years with Ultimate. I know its far fetched, but hey, a guy can dream right?

Three years sounds good to me.
