The Last of Us 2 Thread - This thread is full of spoilers, please don't click on it until you finish the game

Got a list handy? Because I’m not buying that at all.

In fact, from a storytelling perspective, TLOU1 was straight up good. It’s just the overall plot that is braindead formulaic and predictable.

Characters are solid, the storytelling works, the gameplay isn’t disconnected from the story… There aren’t glaring flaws in it.

@Pertho I told you the thread title wasn’t good.

I added it to the previous post.

Complete bullshit.

So is the whole series.
But actually show me one game other than TLOU1 (as it was garbage) that had actual good writing.

The Legacy of Kain series. The Deus Ex series. The Witcher series.

3 off the top. Games have different rules for writing. They arent books and They aren’t movies which also have their own unique rules for writing good stories within the confines of their medium.

Man they all have there serious writing flaws, even the Witcher books has the problems.

Legacy of Kain is weak writing wise, starts off strong every title, but I loose what the focus of the story is.

Everything has flaws. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good.

That’s not an inherent problem with VGs as media.

In fact, the first one is the easiest to enforce in Video Games since you have to you know, play through things.

You’re wrong about how VGs as story telling media are flawed. They’re clearly not.

What ever, I done arguing over it.

Cool.

Korean dude destroys the Last Of Us 2 disc after the scene with Joel lol

Might as well post some memes myself. Freshly stolen from Reddit. :upside_down_face:

NOT spoilers, but images are big.

It pisses me off how there are no “choices” to be made in the game and alternative Endings to go after. Which would have helped a LOT to smooth things over, regarding the events of the game. It’s basically like playing through the events of a movie and helpless to watch as things unfold, with Zero input on your part.

I know thats technically no different than stuff like Super Mario Bros 1 and Dragon’s Lair back in the day but, for games in this day & age that tout themselves as being so much more sophisticated experiences? There’s no excuse not to give players more freedom in what they do and or alternate endings to hunt for. Things are just pre-determined to end badly for everyone, especially your favorite characters, and you’re just forced to endure it, or play something else.

Story choices is not something the game needs. You aren’t playing as yourself in these games, you’re playing as that character. They just need to make sure that character is actually staying in character.

No sir, too many other games out there offer choices and differing paths. So there’s no excuse for such an ambitious title not to have it also.

Even back in the day with stuff like Dragkengard for PS2, a 17 yr old game, you had the option of striving for different outcomes that didn’t suck.

This isn’t about what other games do. It’s about what the characters themselves would choose.

Drakengard is an entirely different type of game and world where every ending is canon. Like, all the endings have happened, they are just parallel universes.

I think I got to the end of the 4th chapter on the run I’m watching…

Spoilers

By 4th chapter, I mean Seattle Day 3.

I’m sorry, what the fuck is this pacing?

So Abby shows up at Ellie’s hideout, ambushes Tommy, who’s seen lying down, untied at gun point. Jesse and Ellie rush out the door. Jesse takes a headshot and is dead on the spot as soon as they open the door.

Abby, with one pistol, holds Tommy hostage (again, he’s just lying on the ground and clearly responsive, as he tells Ellie to not come out of her cover and surrender herself.

Ellie does it anyway. Dialogue, then Abby points her gun at Ellie.

Ironically, the previous cutscene had Ellie hold two of Abby’s group at gunpoint. Predictably, one of them managed to get close enough to take Ellie’s gun, though it didn’t really work out for him in the end as Ellie managed to shoot him and overpower his girl to kill her too.

Tommy was in a better position to take Abby down while Ellie shot her though. But I digress, there’s real risk and tension.

What happens?

Cut to a flashback of Abby’s childhood in the middle of all that tension.

Me, the streamer and the chat immediately had “WTF?” reactions. Of all times to try and dump exposition on Abby’s character, that’s not the right one!

This just murders the pacing of the scene, as all tension is immediately sucked out of it.

This criticism isn’t a matter of opinion, even if you like the story, getting a flashback dumped on you on that scene will suck out the tension of the whole situation on the spot. This is a technical problem with the writing. It’s objective, not subjective.

Druckmann is a hack.

I’d honestly rewatch SFV’s story mode than this.

Games with self inserts offer that. This isn’t a role play to have any of that shit.

This isn’t an RPG. It’s like complaining that you don’t get a racetrack in this game to use the driving mechanics to the fullest.

It’s just not the objective of the game at all.
