The Kuma Thread

Aha, I like how that tweet I sent to UltraDavid about Law and Paw is getting out there!

i missed the AA juggle but still gg

Kuma is such an awesome character, I’m trying him out now because he’ll get some great buffs.
But I’m afraid the rollnerf wil hurt his wake-up game, when the bear’s down he’s toast.

Roll nerf hurting his wake-up game? Nah. If anything it’ll improve it. As they can’t move after a roll for 7 frames, they have to guess which option Kuma will toss at them. If they stand, they risk getting Headbutted or the enemy going low for a chain combo, or a standard throw that causes them to lose life. If they duck, they risk getting either rock’n’roll circus’d (which does increased damage now) or getting hit with a jump fierce. At least, I think a j.HP counts as an overhead if they’re crouching.

In any case, whatever throw we go with, it’s much more damage now, 1/5th or even 1/4th of their bar.

Wow, Kuma is really awesome. He’s a slow but powerfull ?rushdown? character.
Is HK XXX frolicking bear his best option after a tag?

HK/HP xx Frolicking Bear or Megaton Claw are his most conventional finishers after a launcher. Tag Cancel nets you some really interesting stuff depending on your team.

Easiest damaging combo I’m using is J.HP, HK XXX megatonclaw, HP, HK XXX frolicking bear or fatal wind

Sure there are lots of ways of optimizing that

HK is so much easier to land than HP though.

This characters damage is fucking ridiculous.

Yep, Kuma’s damage is ridiculously high for how easy it is to do and land. The big thing is learning how to deal with everyone considering his normals and relatively large size. It’s kind of a boon honestly, not as much execution to worry about so you can focus on actually playing the game.

Anyone here ever trigger an EX Grizzly Fling? I’ve done it somehow, accidentally, like 4 or 5 times. And yes, I know what I am saying… he does the HBS + f.HP fling-up/Dudley-style motion in EX glow, and it is quite a bit faster. Since I’ve only executed accidentally, I have never been paying close enough attention to remember whether I’ve been in HBS already, or just normal stance when it happens. It just suddenly comes out and I’m stunned for a seconds wondering what the hell just happened. I can’t find any documentation on it, and have tried all sorts of motions and button-presses to try and get it to come out to no avail. Anyone?

Are you sure you weren’t doing his alphacounter??? thats what his alpha counter looks like!

Hey guys. I run Law/Kuma, and for the most part do pretty good because alot of people don’t seem to know the Kuma matchup because I guess he’s still an underused character. Anyway, one character I had trouble with last night at a local was this one guy’s Julia. I haven’t fought a lot of them but man, she can keep pressure going. The only option I really had was to do EX Frolicking Bear in between his strings because she’d either push me back far enough where I couldn’t connect with a G-Clef, or I’d get counterhit into crumple. Anyone got any advice on dealing with pressure as Kuma aside from EX Frolick/EX Headbutt because his normals are preeeetty lackluster, for the most part.

So, after experimenting with Kuma for a bit, I think I’m liking this character. Does a ton of damage, seems like a great anchor character. Now I just need to find a good partner for him. So far, the characters that I am using/learning that I think are good point characters for Kuma are:

Ken
Juri*
Cody
Sakura
Lars

*I’m still not sure whether she’s better on point or anchor, it seems to vary depending on the team.

Any suggestions?

Also, keep in mind that I’m still only on 1.06 (I play exclusively on PC), so I don’t know if any of the 2013 changes will change Kuma’s synergy with any of the above characters.

So I just picked this game back and was trying out Sagat/Bob and Safari just didn’t “click”. Therefore, I am returning to the character I originally picked up. Would order of my team be better as Bob/Kuma or Kuma/Bob?

EX Megaton Punch has invincibility and leads into a combo opportunity, that’s better than Ex Frolicking if it’s on the ground pressure. EX head butt is only really good for full screen punishes or strings that have a bit of -frames on block but not enough to get you a full combo like off G-Clef. Other than that, backdashing is probably pretty key aside from being in the corner. Kuma actually has some major advantages at footsies range if you learn it so it can be ok to reset your position and go in again, I think. Seth or someone better might know but that’s how I see it.

I’m going with Kuma/Bob at the moment because I haven’t really learned how to play bob as much outside of his combos but Bob can be a beast on point if you’re really good so I think Bob/Kuma might be a better choice. You can easily get double spiral rocky combos off a launcher from Kuma though so there are merits either way.

So this thread is pretty dead, but I figure I’ll ask some questions.

I really have no idea how to play this character. I know his forward HP is a good poke and he does huge damage but that’s it. So I have a couple questions:

Hunting stance: how do you use this? When is it advantageous to be in hunting stance? Do you want to go into hunting stance when you have a life lead? Also, what purpose does Kuma’s headbutt (back mp) serve in hunting stance, I’m pretty sure its not safe on block. Is it just a tool for getting in? What’s the best way to use the forward fierce punch rising attack, and the back fierce punch bear butt spin? I’m not really sure why he has these tools.

In Kuma’s footsie game, what do you want to be poking with? Big Tree is +1 on block for the full string I think, but other than that I really don’t know which pokes I should be using aside from forward fierce punch and looking for confirms into HP Gigaton Claw, HP followup, s.HK xx Frolicking Bear or Super. How does Kuma open an opponent up in his neutral game?

Last question, oki. In terms of safe jumps, tricks, and setups to beat tech rolls, what does Kuma have? I’m having trouble finding up to date information on this.

Thanks for your help everyone. Information for this game is hard to come by, and hopefully somebody will be able to answer these questions.

Hello and sorry my bad English, hope you understand what i am trying to say.

When it comes to the pokes, rather than using f.HP, i use mostly f.lp cause it have pretty good reach also and if it hits, it is easy to follow with BnB =MP,HP,Megaton claw, HK,Frolicking Bear. Even if ppl block it, it is very safe cause your opponent don’t know whether you are trying to do the whole combo or do you drop it after HP or Megaton claw for example.

I like to use hunting stance in mid-far dinstance as well as for opponents wake up’s. In mid-far distance you two options for solid AA while using Hunting stance: Frolicking Bear or Break’n. Both move’s are also very deadly against opponent’s that are trying to poke or run towards you because Frolicking Bear have charge (very powerful tool to slow opponent down) and because Break’n have armor.

By hunting stance head butt, you must mean hunting spear, i find it very unsafe and use it rarely use it. Mostly if opponent makes mistage in mid-far distance or he switch character. I follow up with HK,Frolicking Bear/Super.

Hunting stance is also great for mixing the opponent’s wake up:
-Hunting stance throw have enough range for rolling opponent’s even if u were standing next to them ( +i think it throws even ducking opponent)
-Break’n if he opponent is trying to attack from wake up. (Love this move when opponent is in low hp and he is trying to hit and switch cancel :D)
-Grizzly Fling is not so safe, but it is low attack and if it hit’s i follow it with Triple hammer
-You can always just jump neutral or cross up with jf.mk etc…
-Or just cancel hunting stance

In neutral game i think it is pretty much like other powerhouses, like to Gief for example. Try to get close, but be patient. Once i get close to the opponent, i try to pressure them with fast attack’s and throw’s.

For switch cancel’s i like to use Frolicking Bear cause i keep using it a lot.

This is pretty much how i like to play Kuma and love it

btw, Rock 'n Roll Circus is very very powerful move and have nice reach. I land it pretty much every time i try it and i really need to try to use it more. After empty cross up, after attack string’s etc… I don’t even use Head Butt after Rolling Bear anymore because ppl are blocking it low. Rock 'n Roll Circus is answer for that also ^^

Thanks for all your help man!

Hunting spear goes through projectiles and wall bounces as you probably know. It can be used in combos too e.g after Akumas or Lars uppercut. Could be useful for pandora setups.

Triple hammer is a great and decent damaging overhead. The first hit is -2 on block only so stop there if it’s blocked. According to the frame data you can even switch to hunting stance after the first hit.

Cr. Mk looks like a standing mid but hits low. Use it while you are standing and cancel it into lp megaton to be safer (-2).
