The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match Thread

Im betting its that second part. Stupid KOF motions.

I wonder if that second reason was why I couldn’t get stuff like rekkas and the like to come out consistently on the PS2 version, although perhaps not as I never screw up on the Dreamcast version.

Anyway, I’m an on/off KOF fan in that, whenever I want to get into one of the games I never have anyone to play with so excuse me for my ignorance of this matter - why is it so important that we get this new version of KOF2K2?

I mean, personally I loved 2K2’s music, stages and character selection. I thought the combos and “max” system were nice and the emphasis off of DP’s seemed great to me. The rooster didn’t seem to be too bad in the balance department and then finally we got KOF Neowave which is pretty much a remake, so I guess I’m missing something.

As you say in low level maybe it works.
About Chris grab, is very annoying as this grab has few frames where you can escape jumping. You have to expect it in order to avoid it with a jump, but with this defense mixup, you’re safe.

Yeah kof commands has always been difficult for me.

I can’t do basic K’ combos halft the time.

I love the inputs in XI but they gotta be precise. You can’t do DP, QCB as a HCB in XI like you can in 98.

Well, 02UM was something that was crafted for more reasons than one.

For one, the most obvious one, SNK wants money. 02 is one of the most popular and most played versions of the series (if not THE, in the case of the Japanese), so making a remake/retool of the game is a fairly easy and profitable thing for them for to do. Even with all the new bells and whistles that they’re adding, it’s still a much more in the way of a “cost-effective” venture for them, which will serve to make them some good money in order to help fund XII (and on)'s development.

For two, it allows SNK to go effectively “go back”, and be able to do more to make the game the way they wanted (because after all, at the time, Eolith was in charge) and more. They retcon K9999 out of existence (and replace him with this new guy), and then go ahead deliver on the SNK-style fanservice that makes their public swoon and, at the same time, butters their bread.

So, for the SNK fan, this new release means a lot. Especially in light of how XII is definitely a “new” direction for the series (and not even a number of fan-faves made it this time around). This will probably satiate the majority of fans who may not appreciate all of the new stuff that’s been added, and will probably do well enough for “old-style KOF” fans…at least, until they make yet ANOTHER UM type game. Because they probably have at least ONE more left in them, to get as much usage of those old sprites, as much as possible.

Glad to see I’m not the only one who thought they’d end up doing that

a final dream match with all the new 03 and XI characters would be an awesome send off to the old sprite library.

They’d probably be better off finishing the Ash arc too so that they aren’t obligated to make roster picks for canon sake for 13

SNK head(don’t recall who) said that they weren’t planning on stopping at 2k2UM. So yay?

Well, I think it’s a bit too late for that, since they already went through the trouble of making XII-Iori “flame-less”. Obviously, XIII is going to be the next decisive thing regarding storyline.

…Of course, that doesn’t mean that such a “Final Dream Match” couldn’t make for a decent “side-story” if they really were concerned about such a thing.

If true, again, it shouldn’t come to any surprise. Like I said, at this stage in the game, they’ve got at least one more game that could just use MVS KOF assets alone. It could be basically a legit version of “KOF Mugen” with every character iteration from 98UM, 02UM, with the newbies from 03-XI-NeoWave (Young Geese) added to the cast. Instant and easy profits for SNK.

Then, if they decide to go the extra mile, and make yet another game after that, which could include those extra dudes from NGBC, well, then that’s up to them. But they’ll definitely be running out of usable material after a while…

KOF XI and 1/2 needs to happen, dream match with KOF XI’s system.

Cant wait for Mark of the Wolves UM. :wow:

Yeah I hope they stop with KOF and update other games from other franchises like Samurai Shodown or Fatal Fury.

last blade

They already did with SS though; That’s what SS Tenka is about.

As for Fatal Fury, it’s doubtful unless they want to draw sprites for the handful of characters who didn’t make it to Real Bout 2.

I recall that there is actually a new 3D Samurai Shodown game in the works? (Yeah I know that “Samurai Shodown” and “3D” is a receipe for disaster, but let’s see if SNK’s experience with the KOF Maximum Impact series has taught them anything)

Whadda mean? The first 3-D Samurai Shodown game, SS64 was good, and the sequel was even better. I wrote a review on the Samurai Shodown series as a whole on Kurt’s site where I explain in depth: http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/samuraishodown/samuraishodown.htm

Wasn’t Tenka more of a Hyper Samurai Shodown and not a rebalanced / prettier remake of a game, though?

That depends on how you look at it.

It was a game that incorporated every aspect of SS’s past (barring the HN64 games and that crappy PSX game, obviously), and threw it all together. Even so, it still did a lot to continue where 5 Special left off, so maybe you can consider it an “extension” of that too.

But in any case, Tenka was as much of a “SS-UM” as we’re probably going to get. I can’t see them doing anything more than that, sans the obvious re-tooling and re-balancing that could make the game even better.

Romancer is right in the notion that the Hyper Neo Geo SS64 games WERE gravy. SS64-2 was basically SS4 with a more stylish battle system and went completely above and beyond with the whole “Shura/Slash” and “Rasetsu/Bust” system.

However, everything I’ve heard about the NEW 3D game “Sen/Edge of Destiny”? It got panned in Japan since its release last Summer, and those who did play it said its crap.

For blood-mongers, the eventual American PS3/360 release will have plenty of that. Still, I doubt that those who actually play the games for more important things will probably find it lacking.

Unless it’s a sequel to SS Sen, then you can forget about this, since SS Sen is god awful. A mediocre Soul Calibur clone that throws away just about everything about SS that made it unique.

re: SS64 games

I’m going to have to put my foot down here. SS64 was one of the most awful things I’ve ever played. Besides being a clunky, murky ugly mess, it just played poorly. Whoever thought the stamina gauge was a good idea needed to be shot, and the hit detection was beyond terrible. It had me longing for Samurai Shodown 3, for chrissakes!

However, I will admit to never playing SS642. I actually found it in an arcade here along with gasp SS0 Special, but never bothered to play it. I heard it was better than the first one, but that doesn’t say much. I know several (all?) of its characters were actually substantially different in Slash/Bust, but I prefer what they did with SS0, which is what they should have done in the first place - just take the good alternates and make them new characters.

SS64:2 is actually pretty damn good; out of all that generation where they churned out a ton of 3D fighters from 2D, i definitely approve of it.

also MIRA is boss; even if SS:Sen sucks, SNK knows how to do 3D right
