hahah, so true, man.
I want to play ppl ggpo but NOOOOBODY is online. ill be on tonite
Keep trying, though you might try different hours too. It’s a lot more rare that NO ONE is there (unless the server crashed recently) than it was when I started playing Jojos on GGPO. Does happen sometimes, though, but also some people just drop in and don’t stick around/idle if no one is there, so it’s hard to go from zero.
im on ggpo right now, 2 people playing, 3 specs. I wanna play. im off tomorrow, ill be on for a bit
Well, I’ll be around tonight after work some probably, and definitely during the weekend.
What would be a good button configuration for my ps2 pad? I don’t have a stick so don’t tell me to go buy one because I’m not going to. I just want to learn this game so that I can casually play it, I don’t intend on joining tourneys but if the response is intelligible then I will like become one of you.
On a pad I used to have light - [], medium - X, fierce - R1, stand - R2. I find it easier to pull off tandems that way than when I used to have the stand on L1 lol.
In an off-beat chance i’m playing on pad (too late to use a stick).
My set mine up is
[ ] = A (light)
X = B (medium)
O = C (Firece)
R1 = S (Stand)
I have this set up on a pad.
Square = Light
Triangle = Medium.
Circle = Strong.
X = Stand.
Hmm one thing I could never test but just assumed worked because it works so often in match vids came to mind: with Old Joseph, at the end of his standard tandem combos…is his command throw guaranteed? I see people get nailed by it all the time, and when I do it, it seems to work pretty consistently, but I’m not actually sure if they can just hop out of it but don’t for some reason? IE:
2C->214S->2C->2C->5A->5A->5B->5C->236B->Pull->(Stand on)5C->236C->Pull->5A->3B->Command Throw
And…question #2: is there any reason not to do a bunch of hamon damage when you do his 236 grabs? How easy is it to escape, or is it guaranteed extra damage?
Kinda sucks but I can’t really test how escapable stuff is on my keyboard because if I press more than 2 keys simultaneously my computer has a hernia.
How do all a yall like fayk, geezer, roukyou, and apple all stay soo aggressive? I’m pretty sure my main problem in this game is just being overly defensive getting cornered and smacked down
I’ve only played roadapple, but if I had to do an extremely detailed analysis of my problem against him it’s:
He’s better than me.
Heh. I could list like 30 things I do wrong, but I’m sure I’ll squash them over time. If all else fails you could pick you know who and do: Guard Cancel->(Stand on)5B->SWAAAAAAAAAAAA!!
Good sets today JosefJoestar. Definitely a lot better than I initially thought. Great to see a new guy throw down tandems :tup:
We got some games in tonight in JoJos, we had two TVs for Super and then there was the JoJo table, haha. We didn’t draw a huge crowd but there were like 6 of us playing. My Hol Horse was doing pretty well, I haven’t gotten many of the links down yet but I was doing well with some basic zoning techniques and the Dangan bullet super. People were getting salty about the double super on wakeup you can do with that, haha.
Is there any way to block that bullet, though? I was doing it wrong so I know people could have blocked/avoided it but they weren’t able to.
So far we’ve got me as Hol Horse, a Young Joseph player, a Vanilla Ice, and some of the O.G.s who got us started with the game use multiple characters, but seem to prefer Dio. I’m gonna try and be a good dude and go on Supercade but I’m shy and I got a busy week ahead of me so we’ll see
god damn, wish i was in orlando right now ahaha. glad there are peepz out there gettin a little scene goin. i’m tryin to get somethin going here but my personal issues i got goin on are gettin in the way. do you go on ggpo at all?
Nah, my laptop doesn’t seem to like it. Not sure if it’ll like Supercade yet either, but we’ll see. I just gotta make sure the ports are open.
Super is still predominant here but we just randomly started doing Jojo’s last weekend, haha. I think it’s great to play the retro stuff too because I wasn’t around back in their prime but the games are still so good even today
ive actually played 3 “newbies” who were doing chaka bnb’s / ice bnb’s / etc.
I think that says something positive about the future of this game =D
I think if you do it RIGHT, it’s unavoidable. That (and his other combos into multiple supers) are kind of Hol’s best tools, and he arguably NEEDS them.
If you do it late, your opponent’s best options are either:
duck (if their hitbox will be low enough) and then hit you or roll
roll (but they need to make sure they don’t roll, only to have your bullet fly through you, towards them right as roll ends) and punish
super with high invincibility (needs to last long enough that hol is no longer invulnerable but they can’t hit you - B. Pol QCB super for example)
Practice, and just knowing my opponents a lot. My style is probably a lot more berserk and unsafe on the rushdown than the others you mention (geezer, roadapple, and roukyou are all better than me, though I hopefully am still catching slowly than others).
I have worse execution (I’m either too old/reflexes too slow or panicky to do tandems well, in a match) than any of the above, so a lot of my game is playing based on my other skills, so lots of zoning and spacing, trying to bait out stuff, or playing mindgames a bit. With joseph (especially) I do stuff that is stupid on its face, like doing a dashing slide that will be ambiguous whether it will hit, but if an opponent moves to punish me, I cancel it into a tandem - this is planned.
I’d say the biggest thing about being defensive is that you need to know when it’s worth taking that extra bit of chip, and when you should try some gambit. Also, working GCing into your game, as I’m still trying to do. The GC for your chars aren’t amazing but aren’t bad either, if I recall. That and pushblocking, especially unpredictably, can make your opponents rushdown more risky.
Roukyou’s characters/playstyle especially are about fishing for that poke -> tandem or super. Iced has those giant hit confirms which hurt like hell.
The best advice I can give is just learn your character’s best, fastest (first move anyways) punish, so when you block your opponent’s BnB (or otherwise), if it’s unsafe, just go for it. B. Pol’s BnB isn’t entirely safe, but unless they GC, it’s pretty decent on block, especially on newer chars. I may be forgetting/wrong, though. I just remember feeling like it was brutal (chip, etc, since I play mostly non-active stand chars) when I was newer.
For the last month or so, I’ve been working on trying to get better at: GCs, using the jump system (hops, hyper hops) etc to the fullest, especially since hyper hops are so useful with Young Joseph.
The other thing is when you are aggressive, even just pausing for a half second can throw off your opponent. Roadapple gave me great advice a long time (I’ve gotten advice from all the regulars, over time of course) about the nature of being defensive. IF you literally Always attack, you’re just asking for a super to the face or some other catch-all defense.

EDIT: Jblair, if you want, I will pay attention specifically to what I think you’re doing ‘wrong’ (though I hesitate to prop myself up as some authority) and let you know. I’m always happy to help people, but obviously if I go telling people this unsolicited they’ll think it’s smack talk or at the least (justifiably) rude.
I’m just not used to faster in yo face games. I progress pretty quickly in like 3s and sf4. I don’t do too poorly at svgl anymore and i’ve been playing for like 6 months now. But this and vs DX I just get run over because I can’t think quick enough sometimes
Aight, thanks. People were ducking and jumping over but they never tried to hit me out of it so I got away with some pretty big bullet time shenanigans. I mean, I managed to hit on wakeup and do it correctly once or twice, but not all the time. I was also trying to do Hanged Man > Super Hanged Man but the opponent usually was able to block low. I’m thinking maybe if I do it right I can do a Hanged Man > DP glass shoot as a sort of trap because if they block high they get hit by Hanged Man, but if they block low they get hit by the glass. Not sure if it’ll work, but it seems like it can.
Is there any way to control Vanilla Ice’s super where he forms into a giant ball and hops around the screen from portals and stuff? The Ice player kept doing the one where he comes out from the right side and it was so easy to avoid and counter with a Saikyo no Combi…I can’t help but think there’s a way to control the super because if it’s so predictable you’ve got to combo into it…
