Howdy. I’ve been playing Jojo for a few years now and just started ggpo. I really love it so far. I don’t have a main. I play pretty much everyone but tandem users because I can’t do tandem combos on my keyboard.
Question though: Is there any solid method to teching tick throws? Like even if I know it’s coming and I do nothing but try to tech them on ggpo, I can never seem to tech out of them. How strict is the timing?
No idea tbh, I’m pretty bad at stopping tick throws, which really frustrates me. One time I got thrown like seven times in a row and seen every one coming and STILL couldn’t do anything

Alright, we here in Orlando fired up this game on the 360 last night after playing some Super SF4 (We were originally going to check out 3S, but got derailed by ‘JOJO HOLY SHIT’, haha) and it was my first time playing the game in years and my first time playing against other people.
Game is crack. Didn’t get that much time to play due to time restraints, but I picked up Hol Horse, he’s the only guy I’ve tried so far but I like him, zoning people out with psychic bullets is crazy. Now, what can you guys tell me about him keeping in mind that I’m pretty much a newb at competitive fighting in general, and most likely can’t use GGPO for training? I mean, I might try if I can get the ports open but my computer is pretty old and I’m not sure if it will run right, plus I’m leeching off the neighbor’s Wifi so it may be a breach of trust if I barge into their router to open the ports, haha.
Okay so I just tried GGPO and it was freezing up intermittently on ST so that’s definitely out of the question. The limitations of this netbook are definitely being felt…so do any of you play on Supercade? That might be less CPU intensive, but it’s definitely not the same as it used to be as 2df…
I use Supercade =) I’m available pretty much 2pm-9pm west coast time. Hit me some time so I can create some sessions. Also are you using just Hol Horse or Hol Horse & Voing?
Well as a basic overview of the character: He’s an upper mid tier, mid-long range character. It’s generally best to create some distance and harass your opponent with Hol’s projectiles and Hanged Man, and then attempt to land one one of his many setups into unblockables when they get close-ish. He’s mostly a harass/unblockable setup character. I think he has more unblockable setups than anyone in the game.
For actual videos of his standard combos/unblockables I would take a look through youtube. I’m not sure if there’s anything showcasing all of his stuff, but BBC shows some basic combos for him. If there are no videos detailing his basic mixups/unblockable setups, I can easily record them.

Second, depending on how you define it, the tech window tiny - smaller than almost any other game: about 1-2 frames. Unfortunately the nature of network play makes it a little more wonky than that, since you’re seeing ‘the past’ to some degree. So obviously you can only tech by antipation, not reaction.
It gets more goofy with higher ping, effectively, but GGPO is really still as solid as you can get, for the most part.
Most of us play on GGPO, but a few play on supercade. The wifi thing will also hurt you a little in addition due to pocketless, etc at times. So hopefully someday you’ll be able to upgrade - I think everyone in the community is always happy to see more players.
As far as Hol Horse goes, what Josef said pretty much - search youtube for videos of him. He has several setups that let him land supers off of supers, essentially - at certain ranges anyways.
Oh, shit, really? I’m gonna like this guy, haha. And it’s just Hol Horse, we didn’t have any of the hidden characters unlocked when we booted up the game. I’ll have to peruse Youtube…I know I’ve got a myriad of channels for fighting games in my subscriptions and I’ve seen vids of Jojo come up in a few but never watched. Any of you guys know any good channels with match vids? I’ve got TVranbats and like 30 other fighting game channels, haha.
I would gladly upgrade my laptop/internet situation but I’m just about to go into college and financial situation prevents me from doing so. Maybe once my schedule settles down I can raise some funds for a new laptop that will actually do GGPO, haha. I don’t know about Supercade either, I booted it up to try it out and the game randomly froze on me in singleplayer. It was weird because the ‘press start for player 2’ was flashing like normal and the music didn’t screech to a halt, it was just my Hol Horse getting hit by an attack by CPU Alessy. Maybe it was an anomaly, I don’t know.
If I remember correctly Hol has a glitch that can freeze the game that won’t appear in normal play (only if you use a keyboard to play him) but for some reason I thought it required him to be P2. I don’t know if that’s the same.

Ooh, I have those in my subscriptions. I just put the IP192, TVranbat, and AtTheGates on my subs list last night, haha. Thank you, though, at least this gives me a starting point rather than searching and hoping for the best!
Regarding the freeze glitch it couldnt have been the keyboard, I was using my 360 stick on the laptop…still weird, though. All those glitches looked weird in the first vid, too. Very bizarre…I was also configured for player 1, so I don’t know. Perhaps it was an issue with the rom.
I’m gonna start training in an hour or so, either on the laptop or the 360. Maybe I’ll log into Supercade and give it the old stress test, see if I can at least play there. If not there’s always local play. I mean, the crowd we had going on it the other night was no SSF4 crowd, but we had two vets plus me and one other dude who was watching and got interested. One of the vets plays Dio exclusively it seems and the other used Jotaro, Avdol, and Black Polnareff competently.

Dude, that shit looks crazy! I was watching some casuals earlier where this Hol Horse would use that slow bullet super as a meaty attack like twice in a row and it did major damage. I dunno how the fuck he did it, but it was real nice. I also noticed you can curve the bullets from the stand button attack multiple times, I thought you could only curve them once from my limited play time, haha.
That Hanged Man loop looks hella good, too. I’m gonna have to surprise my compadres this weekend with some hardcore Hol Horse training. Thank ya!

been playing a bit yesterday, and i managed to pull of dio s.5A, d.s,2B about 5 or 6 times online, hah. if this keeps on, i might pull off the whole combo some time. it was close yesterday, i got the S~2A, 214C, dash 2A link after it, but screwed up the last 2 links into d.s.2A, tandem.
