The John Wick Thread

I didn’t know the director of John wick was Brandon Lee’s stunt double on the crow.

‘John Wick 3’ director Chad Stahelski opens up about Brandon Lee’s tragic death on ‘The Crow’

Leaving in a few minutes to have lunch and see John wick 3. I’m so stoked.

Edit: glad I went to the first showing of the day but also kinda sad.

Cause for better or for worse…I’m the only one in the theater.

Still hype though!

JW3 was fine.

Like. I was expecting a lot more but at the same time it was still really good. Non-stop amazing action though. Will likely see it again.

I got a feeling like it’ll feel the same way that I did about 2 from 1; it’s more of the same but I didn’t want anything different. I’m excited for Saturday.

Do they expand on the world more?

A lot more. Which was nice but at the same time most of the characters that did expand the universe were in my opinion throw away characters. This will undoubtedly change in John Wick 4 and beyond but as of now they feel very unimportant.

ok saw the movie. im tired so im not gonna give my huge thoughts right now but my minors notes.

Summary

ok

  • a smidge too long. It’s weird near the third act i felt a whole aspect could have been saved for part 4. It honestly felt like it was going to end with the raid scene and they do that in part 4. But i guess this really ends the initial saga and we start something new.

  • I thought part 3 would be the war on the high council based on part 2. but something interesting to look forward to in part 4. But i felt like lawrence fishburne’s character should never had owed any alliegence to any side. Like it should have been that way from the very beginning.

  • i fucking love all the nods to the different martial arts movies…enter the dragon remix scene was dope. you can’t do a raid tribute without some raid guys.

  • Mark fuckin Dacascos stole the show. I loved how it started like some ancient wise ninja and turned into fanboy real quick lmfao. im pretty sure the reason for the neon club style lights were a homage to drive. but id have to rewatch that movie…havent seen it since i was in hs. but that shit is a bonafide indy movie classic.

  • finger sacrifice felt stupid since he was betrayed in the end. Like the expansion to show their is a g-d above the council…which is confusing in itself. wtf is the point of the council if their is someone who calls the shots above them?

overall i enjoyed it…just felt it could have been a bit shorter.

The last part you mentioned was one of the biggest issues for me.

I agree with both of you gents last statement. Overall I enjoyed it.

If someone asks how many people died, my response will be “yes”.

Summary

Low 200s.

My guess is in John Wick: Chapter 4 he’s basically going to murder the population equivalent of a small island nation.

I saw JW 3 yesterday.

Pros:

Action scenes (Horses, Dogs, and motorcycles oh my.)

Some character development and world building

Halle Berry. For once shes not playing some meek character.

Cons

Humor. I also didnt like the fanboy aspect of some of the henchmen

There are some Looney Tunes esque actions. 1 is kinda ok, but the other is a pretty WTF moment

Overall: 8.5/10

JW 1 - 8.5/10
JW 2 - 8/10

Aside from the constant stream of McGuffins like Sophia and the high table elder another thing that really bothered me was how little Halle actually did. They really played up her roll in all the interviews and trailers. And it just wasn’t there.

I have a feeling she’ll be a big player in 4 and beyond though. She attacked an ally of the high table, killed dozens of his men and helped John Wick in general. She’s an enemy of the high table now.

Oh dog jiu jitsu was fucking amazing. I wanted more of her ninja dogs.

For sure.

I just figured in how they played her up she’d Be an ally to John the whole movie. Not just what ended up being a 20 minute cameo

I really enjoyed myself watching this movie but some of the fanboying some of the enemies were doing at the end was both funny and annoying.

It felt like they weren’t taking the fact they were fighting John Wick seriously. As much as I enjoyed the fight with The Raid mid bosses (if only because if felt like they plucked their characters right from those movies and dropped them into this one) they seemed to have entirely too much respect for him. I’m surpised John didn’t kill those 2, they got lucky. And I’m only ok with it since that means they could potentially be back for another installment. People need to be more like Common’s char from 2. He played someone who knew exactly who John was and clearly had respect for him but he wasn’t gonna give him a second chance. I got that sense that if John fucked up or slipped then he was dead…and it was kind of lacking from the final fights a bit.

Also want to say that the High Table is on some bullshit. I know there are rules and all but John needs to at least tell these guys what transpired to get to this point. And if they don’t care about that then fuckem up to best of his ability.
Also goddammit Winston! I thought John was in on it and it was all a ploy…then they showed us the fall and then it was like ‘…I don’t think he was in on that…’

rewatching 2 reminded me john was screwed either way. the high table doesnt give a fuck whos fault it was, its the fact he broke the rule. logically the plot should have been to prove giovanni pushed john into this. by having him try to kill john twice in one movie.

Welll. Sorta. John denied to fulfill a blood marker. That’s considered a sign of betrayal in their network. The usual retaliation is death. Winston even mentions as such.

Antonio trying to cover his ass and murking John to erase any proof of Antonio setting up the assassination of his sister was smart on his part. He knew John couldn’t go to the High Table because either A) They simply wouldn’t believe John or B) They would have killed John on the spot for killing a high table member despite being bound to a marker and then (likely) go after Antonio. Which would cause a civil war among the assassins.

i feel like logically only a civil war can happen now. all the characters who are left alive have been screwed by the high council now in some way or another in part 2 and 3.

Oh no doubt.

Summary

Sophia fucked herself over by helping John despite him being excommunicato, attacked a ally of the high table and helped John find the elder of the high table. So she will likely have to abandon the Moroccan Continental and seek out John.

You have the Bowery King and his entire network allying themselves with John too after Zero fucked him up on behalf of the high table.

Winston and Charon likely told John what was going to happen before his encounter with Zero and before the Adjudicator called for a parlay/Truce. They likely figured all of this would happen. There is no way Winston and Charon would betray John.
Charon even says “Well played” like they knew it was going to unfold this way.

Winston was also very sarcastically surprised when the Adjudicator said that John was still alive and very nonchalantly was like “oh yeah. I can fix this. Don’t worry”

So you have Winston and his entire Network as well. He even mentioned he has a network of connections that reach far beyond any Continental.

Plus there is undoubtably a network of ally’s John still has despite being excommunicato and on the run from the high table.

@maxx Halle actually was instructed on how to train those dogs from scratch. All the commands she gave those dogs in every scene were real and they obeyed due to weeks of personal training with them, not an off-screen handler. Also respect to Ms. Berry for looking and moving on point for a woman in her fifties.
