The Jazz/Progressive Music Thread

Since it seems that there are people listen Jazz/Porgressive music on GD, i think that we could have an use for a dedicated thread to discuss about them
I suck at making thread titles, so if anyone have a better name for it feel free to suggest it.

Also, if anyone thinks that there is something that deserves to be on the fornt page just tell me so i can add it

The flipside of jazz isnt prog. Why would they be in the same thread? Just curious. Theres a shit ton of different prog. Art rock, prog house, prog rock, “alt hip-hop”…

It should just be Patrician General imo…

Syke1 is probably right. Maybe jazz fusion/prog rock is more appropriate?

I put Prog Music as a way to group stuff like prog rock, R.I.O., zeuhl, etc.
But i agree that it can be a little broad, is not like we will also discuss prog metal here :looney:
If you think that jazz/fusion/prog rock is a better title i can change it :wonder:

I guess but that is also kinda limiting. Can Swans, Flaming Lips or some post punk outfits, or math rock be posted here? If so I think it should have a different name.

Why cant we talk about prog metal here? Its better than having a billion different prog threads. And there is so much blurred lines in styles these days…

Well, if people want to discuss prog metal here is welcomed, but we already have a metal thread for everything metal.
Plus there are certain types of prog metal that wouldn’t necessarily fit with the idea of this thread, or at least is what i think.

For example, you can see that this could go with the idea of prog/jazz/fusion

But not this

Not sure if this applies here but Scott Bradlee has some nice Swing/Jazz/Ragtime covers of various songs. Their Drunk In Love cover was amazing.

This was a side project of the members of Magma, from what i know it was something like gateway to introduce people into Zeuhl by making an album that was more digestible for the masses :looney:

*I wouldn’t classify Swans (I still need to listen to their latest 2 Hour Long LP) or the Lips as “Progressive”. I’d call them experimental and artrocky. But questioning what is, or isn’t, “Prog” is getting away from the spirit of this thread. Ultimately I think the point of this thread is to share Jazzy and progressive forms of music.

Is that nebulous and subjective topic? Absolutely, but that’s one of the things that make music interesting to talk about. *

I wanted to reply to this a couple days ago but didn’t. Yeah, I do play bass, 23 years and counting, which is why I said I needed to bump the bass/guitar thread. Got some stuff I need to post over there. I listen to ALL the bass players even those I don’t care for like Victor Wooten. Right now (and probably for the past two years) I’ve been really heavy on Patitucci and Michel Alibo. If you guys haven’t heard of the french group Sixun, check them out on youtube. Sixun is some serious jazz funk/fusion with an african based feel. Not for the faint of heart.

I hadn’t heard of those you mentioned but will check them out this weekend.

You guys have good taste (or at least so far it seems that way); I hope this thread doesn’t die off, but I’d like to see all of us post a few suggestions, even if it’s just once a week on an album or two. I need to update my library with some new stuff so hook a brotha up!

I’ll let it be known though, I like my music with some groove - I can’t do all out screaming guitar fusion…Well it depends…Say Tribal Tech for example. I love some Scott Henderson when he’s with the right bass player and Gary Willis brings the funk, all day all night. Gary Willis is stupid funky.

I’ll be posting in here once a week myself with suggestions. Let me know what you guys preferences are - nothing is worse than people suggesting music that you waste the time/money buying and you don’t like it

I always hear everything that is posted on the Metal thread and i will do the same with this, so for my part you know that i will hear your suggestions and give my opinion about it
I will also try to give at least once a week a suggestion of something that i like or something new that i found.
Though there are certain music that i like to listen that i am not sure if people would like, hell to this day i am not really sure if i like it or is that i find a vile facination with it

The music nerd side of me always wishes I listened to more Jazz, but I rarely do. This was from an album I still spin from time to time tho

Appreciate the heads-up, @kaz‌ ! Subscribed, and will definitely take a better look at the thread once I get home from work.

Cynic is a progressive metal band that has been changing their sound trough the years, they started as Technical Death Metal/Fusion with their 1st album but have been steering into a more soft sound between Progressive atmospheric Metal/Rock with their recent offerings, they are from miami btw.

Those are some of their songs

For this album they still had the Death Metal sound, though not the lyrics which were more philosophical instead of violence and stanism which were the common by the time.
